Sean found that this Mr. Scholar was quite the character.
To think he’d even come up with a "way to participate" like making him a Judge.
It was just...
"Aren’t you afraid people will gossip about you?"
For someone so young to take a seat on the Judge’s panel was like a fresh graduate becoming the CEO’s secretary at some major corporation; it would be difficult to stop people from suspecting he had used some back-door connections.
Laelando replied nonchalantly, "I’m not afraid."
"If there’s any gossip, it’ll be about you. What do I have to be afraid of?"
Every Wizard in the city knew he was an extremely strict Truth Tutor who despised nothing more than people whose abilities didn’t match their station. The gossip would never touch him.
Besides, it wasn’t as if Sean lacked real skill. By all accounts, there was nothing wrong with him giving the Judge’s Medal to Sean. Even if Her Highness the Saintess herself were to question him, Laelando’s conscience would be clear.
And the more likely scenario was that everyone would only question Sean.
So if they were questioning Sean, what did that have to do with him, Laelando?
He had simply done what he was supposed to do: discover a true "genius" for False Heaven. Not only was he blameless, he had in fact performed a great service. As for how Sean would prove he was a "genius" and convince everyone...
...that was Sean’s own business.
Sean: "..."
’This old fox, he sure knows how to keep his own hands clean.’
’...Whatever, this is fine.’
Sean thought to himself, ’In any case, no matter what status I use to attend the Table of Truth, I’ll probably have to show off a little. Otherwise, how am I supposed to attract the attention of Her Highness the Saintess and get her to summon me for a private audience?’
’I can’t just rely on my pretty face, can I?’
Sean admitted that he was indeed handsome enough to be popular with girls, but he figured the Saintess wasn’t that superficial. He would still have to show off a little.
The only difference was that now, it wouldn’t count as bullying the younger generation.
"I’m leaving."
Sean accepted the Judge’s Medal and turned to leave, waving Laelando off from seeing him out.
In truth, Laelando hadn’t wanted to see him out anyway. His earlier offer was pure courtesy. It was a full ten-second walk from the back room to the bookstore’s entrance. Add a bit of small talk, walk a little slower, and half a minute would be gone. He would miss out on reading the problems several more times!
Every second of academic research was precious, and an epiphany could strike at any moment. Laelando cared far more about the Truth Technique in his mind than he did about Sean himself.
After all, the bookstore was only so large; it wasn’t as if Sean couldn’t find his own way out. There was no need to insist on walking him to the door. He, on the other hand, desperately needed the time. Every extra second he spent thinking was a chance to deepen his understanding of the Truth Technique.
So much so that Sean had barely left the back room—he hadn’t even walked out of the bookstore yet—when Laelando scrambled into action. He rummaged through a messy pile of books and pulled out a brand-new notebook. He had to copy down all the problems in his head before he forgot them.
...
Meanwhile, when Sean walked out of the bookstore, he didn’t see Eleanor or the others.
Elise had assumed Laelando would start instructing Sean today, and since the Truth Technique was quite difficult, she figured it wouldn’t be over any time soon. So she had taken Tony and the others to eat and get familiar with the "cafeteria" here.
Elise’s guess hadn’t been wrong. Laelando, a man of decisive action, had indeed wanted to start teaching Sean today. With such a great Talent, every second of waiting was a waste. He just hadn’t expected Sean’s "erudition" to be even more profound than his own, to the point that he was the one who got schooled...
Sean wasn’t worried when he came out and saw no one. He was just wandering around anyway, so going alone was fine. Besides, coming up with questions for Laelando had exhausted him. His current Spiritual Strength couldn’t sustain such a massive drain, so it was a good time to head back to the dorm the way he came and get some rest.
Having wandered for so long today, Sean had been observing the city along the way. It felt very similar to the cities from the Era of Polymath in his dreams. The style was about the same, with all the necessary amenities. The architecture was predominantly castle-like. If he had to point out a difference, it was that you basically never saw cars on the streets.
Only carriages and broomsticks.
The only thing that truly reminded him of his school days was the dormitory.
But he had to admit, the dorm had a strong campus vibe. The outside world looked like a major city, but the moment he came back here, Sean was instantly reminded of his university life in the Real World. Back then, he’d been a lazy bum who would absolutely never leave his room if he could help it. Two out of his three meals a day were brought back by his roommate, just like now—
On a whim, Sean sent Ryan a message.
"Bring me back a meal, thanks, man!"
You have to be sweet when asking someone to bring you food.
Calling him "man" was already the reserved option; plenty of people would call someone "Godfather" for the same favor.
Ryan quickly replied, "OK."
He was actually surprised that Sean was back at the dorm. Wasn’t he supposed to be having a lesson at the bookstore?
But he didn’t ask for the time being, planning to question Sean when he got back and see if he could squeeze some knowledge out of him.
Sean, meanwhile, made his bed, lay down contentedly, and crossed his legs as he stared up at the wooden slats of the top bunk.
’You know, this really does feel a bit like my college days.’
’It’s a shame you can’t turn back time. I’ll never have that kind of carefree life again.’
’Not in the New World, and not in the Real World.’
’Unless I take out the Church Court, or that whole bunch of Witch Hunter Families.’
At this thought, Sean pulled out his phone again and called Elvire.
He planned to tell her that he would be staying here for a month to meet the Saintess.
He would also ask her how things were progressing with the Blazing Angel Family.
The members of the Florist Family had been captured by the Blazing Angel Family for interrogation, and Sean wanted to know the details of the Witch Hunt Operation. This whole thing was actually quite strange. The New World was crawling with Wizards, and Mysticism was hardly a secret—it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say everyone knew about it. Ordinary people weren’t even overly surprised when they saw Magic. It bore no resemblance to what a "Witch Hunt Operation" should look like.
