"Sister, what are you talking about?"
"What do you mean I’m not real?"
When Elvire heard Daeli say she wasn’t real, her mind reeled. She had never treated Daeli as a mere "NPC" in the Consciousness Riverbed; she cherished the joy of this reunion too much for that. But at this moment, it truly felt as if an NPC had gained self-awareness and recognized that she didn’t belong in this world.
Thankfully, Elvire was quick on her feet and decided to play dumb.
But Daeli was not so easily fooled.
She stroked Elvire’s face with affection and smiled. "Silly sister, have you forgotten that I’m Tier Ten?"
When one’s Magic Power Cultivation reached her level, one could see the true essence of things at a glance. Although matter itself is composed of Energy, there are vast differences in "density" and "refinement." The moment Daeli saw Elvire, she knew her sister who had returned home was merely a spiritual entity.
This kind of illusory projection, perfectly identical to the real person, was known as a Soul Reflection. Others might not notice, but it couldn’t fool her.
"I don’t understand what you’re talking about." Elvire stepped forward, wrapping her arms around Daeli’s waist and burying her face in her sister’s soft, fragrant embrace. "All I know is that you’re real," she said, "and you’ll always be my sister."
She was still trying to charm her way out of it.
But Daeli quickly cornered her with the truth, leaving her unable to argue.
"You don’t need to worry about me being upset."
"Even if you’re not real right now, as far as I’m concerned, we’ve still seen each other," Daeli said. "I’ve waited so long for your brother-in-law to return. A few years for you? Do you really think I can’t wait that long?"
"Come with me."
Daeli took Elvire’s hand and led her sister to her own bedroom.
If Sean were here, he would notice the bedroom’s layout was very similar to his old villa in Vernadu. The space was enormous, with several partitioned areas, one of which was filled with keepsakes.
There was the magazine she was reading when she first met Carl Black; the button he gave her on a date, inscribed with a Truth Technique powerful enough to fend off any danger; a pair of earrings Blake had brought as a gift when he visited, made from natural gemstones retrieved from the Winterless Sea Floor; and...
"Huh, what are these shackles for?"
"And there are ankle cuffs, too?"
"Did he give these to you too?"
Daeli: "..."
A faint blush crept across her cheeks. She turned her head away. "I forget."
"It’s not important."
"This isn’t what I wanted to show you anyway."
Daeli knew her sister had always been critical of her brother-in-law and wouldn’t be interested in anything related to Blake. In the past, she might have tried to persuade the young woman, to tell her that her husband was a good man, just a bit too obsessed with his study of Mysticism. But they had only just reunited, and Elvire might be gone by morning; Daeli didn’t want to spoil the moment.
She walked over to a display cabinet, slid open the glass door, and took out two books, handing them to Elvire.
The worn leather cover of the book on top bore a title: *The Beginning of Forbidden Curse*.
"Isn’t this the *Book of Ancient Language* from the fourth floor of the Holy Sanctuary?" Elvire asked in surprise. "How do you have it?"
"Did you manage to save it when the Church Court attacked the Holy Sanctuary?"
*The Beginning of Forbidden Curse* was originally adapted from a Secret Technique of their Blazing Angel Family, so recovering it would just be returning it to its rightful owner.
But Daeli shook her head, a thick sliver of hatred and murderous intent flashing in her eyes. "I wasn’t at the Holy Sanctuary then. Someone tricked me and lured me away."
Otherwise, the Church Court would not have succeeded so easily.
The Pope was powerful, but her Blazing Angel Family was not to be trifled with. Even if she couldn’t have won, she would have inflicted such heavy losses on the Church Court that the Empire wouldn’t have recovered for thirty to fifty years.
Elvire’s brows furrowed as she listened. "Who could have possibly tricked you?"
Her sister had always been a cold and aloof person, which meant she had few friends. And with no friends, she wasn’t one to trust others easily. Besides, at that time, her ’scumbag’ brother-in-law, Carl Black, was already ’dead.’ Who else could have possibly deceived her sister, Daeli?
Daeli quietly uttered two words: "The Saintess."
Elvire: "?"
"Olivia?"
"Yes."
"That bitch! I’m going to kill her!"
Elvire was furious. She’d never liked that woman, the one who tried to steal her sister’s man. She might look beautiful, noble, and elegant, but she was nothing but a vixen. How else could she have so thoroughly bewitched her brother-in-law? Elvire couldn’t believe it—the Saintess hadn’t just seduced her brother-in-law, she’d deceived her sister, too. The woman was rotten to the core!
’Just wait until I "log off,"’ she fumed inwardly. ’I’ll definitely have it out with the Saintess then.’
Daeli listened in silence.
’Why does she make it sound as if I was the one who was seduced?’
In the time after Blake left, she and the Saintess had often worked together, researching methods of immortality. Neither of them believed Blake was truly dead. Even as that thought took root in their minds, they resolved to wait—to wait for the day he would return to them.
On the day it happened, Olivia had used this very pretense, telling Daeli there was a breakthrough in their research and luring her to the Church Court.
Afterward, tens of thousands of the Church Court’s High-tier Wizards swarmed out. Even the Pope himself took part, destroying the Hall of Truth and all of Kovri City.
It was laughable. As Blake’s wife, she was arguably half the master of the Holy Sanctuary, yet she was the last to learn of its destruction.
On that day, she and Olivia cut all ties. They never spoke again.
It wasn’t until hundreds of years later, in this current era, that she saw the Saintess again.
