Diana didn’t want these fragile Wizards. She wanted a special forces unit, an elite Knight Order that could charge headfirst into battle, break enemy lines, and win against overwhelming odds. Only then would they have a sliver of a chance against the Bright King’s Court.
And these Wizards had not let her down.
They worked hard to improve themselves every day, without even needing supervision.
If they knew Her Highness the Saintess was watching them from the castle at this very moment, they’d likely train with even greater fervor.
But Diana had no intention of letting them know.
She didn’t want her presence to influence their convictions. They shouldn’t be fighting for her. One day, they would have to fight for the Hall of Truth, for their fallen ancestors, and for the destroyed Kovri City.
Sean didn’t know, either.
While he was watching Her Highness the Saintess, she, too, was watching him.
Standing by the window, Diana withdrew her gaze from the training ground and sat back down at her desk.
The same Catherine who had been so arrogant and haughty before Sean and the others now stood respectfully by Diana’s side.
Diana picked up a file from her desk and began to look through it.
It contained the personal information of all the Wizards who had entered the city in the last six months.
Each person’s history and life before arriving in the city was laid out in crystal-clear detail. Some of the information was submitted by strongholds like Blake City; the rest, Catherine had investigated herself using the resources of the Church Court. Nothing could escape their notice.
Except for Sean.
His file was almost entirely blank. The only information available was that he had passed Gomez’s mental test to join Blake City in Vernadu, accepted the mission to assassinate the Saintess that very same day, and departed the next morning. In essence, he had only spent a single night in Blake City.
As for what Sean was doing before he came to Blake City...
There was nothing. Not a single trace.
The most they could do was trace his movements back to a flight he took from Selona City to Vernadu.
That was it.
It was as if Sean had materialized out of thin air, rootless and untethered.
If Gomez hadn’t personally vouched for him, Sean would have been thrown into a proper dungeon the moment he was captured.
Seeing Diana’s gaze lingering on Sean’s photograph, Catherine assumed she was suspicious and spoke up. "Your Highness, the man is right here in the city. Shall I have him brought in so we can test him again?"
At this, Diana couldn’t help but smile. "You misunderstand," she said. "There’s nothing wrong with him."
’There’s no one in this world the Church Court can’t investigate.’
’If there is such a person, then they aren’t from this world.’
The very thing that made Sean so suspicious in Catherine’s eyes—his unknown origins—seemed perfectly "reasonable" to Diana.
Because she knew of a way to manifest a Soul Reflection, turning it into a "real person."
Furthermore, Sean had first appeared on their radar in Selona City—a city that happened to be under the former jurisdiction of the Florist Family. Sean was also handsome, young, and a Tier Three... Every characteristic perfectly matched the description Robes had given of the person he suspected was the reborn Carl Black.
At the time, Robes had also mentioned that the man had escaped his Heaven and Earth Net.
She knew of this Magic. It was one of the most powerful Control Magic spells of the Puppet Path. A Tier Three should never have been able to escape it, which led Robes to suspect he possessed some sort of Secret Technique.
Initially, Diana hadn’t paid much mind to this "Secret Technique." If it truly was Carl Black, it would be no surprise for him to possess any number of powerful spells. After all, a starved camel is still bigger than a horse. ’The idea of a mere Tier Seven trying to trap someone who was once beyond Tier Ten?’
’A fool’s dream.’
That was why she had berated Robes, telling him he was getting old and should retire. It was all a deliberate act.
She had just been looking for an excuse to lash out. After all, who told Robes he could make a move on Carl Black?
In truth, the fact that he couldn’t be contained was only natural.
But now, it seemed things were different from what she had imagined.
The so-called "Secret Technique" wasn’t some form of Escape Magic beyond Robes’s comprehension. It was simply Sean retracting his Soul Reflection—as simple as logging on and off a video game.
"The Fallen Nether Technique," Diana sighed softly.
Catherine asked, confused, "What’s the Fallen Nether Technique?"
Diana sidestepped the question. "You don’t need to concern yourself with that. You only need to know one thing: he is more trustworthy than anyone else."
"Even more than me."
Catherine was baffled.
’More trustworthy than you, Your Highness?’
’You have to be kidding!’
’Even if Sean was a former elder of the Holy Sanctuary, could he really be more devoted to it than Her Highness the Saintess herself?’
Diana didn’t elaborate. Her gaze fell once more to Sean’s photograph.
This time, her eyes softened with a tenderness that was utterly unprecedented.
It was a good thing Catherine couldn’t see her expression from her angle, or she might have uttered the classic line: "Her Highness the Saintess... can smile?"
A moment ago, Diana’s suspicion that Sean might be the Carl Black mentioned by Robes was based on logic. She was a highly rational person, one who analyzed the plausibility and possibility of every situation.
Now, however, it was based on feeling.
The moment she first laid eyes on Sean’s face, on those features that were at once strange and yet achingly familiar, she knew the answer in her heart.
There was no "perhaps," no "maybe" about it. He was Carl Black.
’How many years had it been? How many lifetimes...? Diana had lost count of the names she’d gone through. And now, today, she had finally met him again—the man who had been her undoing for generations.’
A flicker of emotion passed through Diana’s eyes. "Catherine," she called out.
"Your Highness."
