The Most Arbitrary Wizard

Chapter 255 - 138: Table of Truth (Part 1)

"Pens for sale! Pens for sale!"

"Freshly made Air Pens! Black, red, pink... we have them all! Come take a look, come see for yourself!"

...

For False Heaven, today was undoubtedly a special day.

Black Rose Castle, the venue for the Table of Truth, had once again taken on the appearance of the Holy Sanctuary. Whenever this happened, the Wizards living in the city would be reminded that the Holy Sanctuary had never been truly destroyed. As long as they were here, the Holy Sanctuary would endure.

Everyone had woken up early today, and that, of course, included the Eleanor Sisters, Teacher Tony, and the others.

Black Rose Castle was a fair distance from their dormitory, separated by the "prison" from when they first entered the city. Thus, the group had agreed to meet here. The bustling street was filled with familiar hawkers’ cries, only this time they weren’t selling newspapers, but pens.

As the name suggested, an "Air Pen" was a pen that could write in the air. Its ink core was made of a special material that could purify a small amount of Magic Power, similar to the gems on a Magic Wand, making it another form of Magic Power storage device.

Kave was quite interested in such a flashy gadget. He walked up and asked, "Boss, how much for these pens?"

The boss asked, "You want a pink one or a black one?"

"Is that even a question?" Kave raised his arm and flexed, showing off his bicep. "I’m a real man. What do you think?"

The boss said, "Got it. Pink!"

As everyone knows, all tough guys are secretly softies.

"How much?" Kave asked.

"Not expensive at all." The boss beamed. "Only 1 Gold Coin."

Kave was at a loss for words.

The others were completely baffled.

’Holy crap, that’s not expensive?’

According to the exchange rate between the currency of the outside world and the city’s money, 1 Gold Coin was worth 10,000 bucks. What kind of pen cost that much?

’Is it studded with diamonds or something?’

"Why don’t you just rob people?" Kave retorted.

"You call this a robbery?" The boss scoffed, jutting his chin toward the next stall. "That guy’s selling them for 1.5 Gold Coins. I’m only charging 1, and I’ll even throw in an air eraser. I’m being very conscientious, you know?"

"And since you’re my first customer of the day, I’ll even throw in a free pencil case. That thing sells for a third of a Gold Coin on its own."

The pencil case was exquisitely designed. It was shaped like a regular pentagon with a faceted surface, making it look like a large, flat black diamond. It had a very premium feel. Inside was an equally exquisite set of stationery: a ruler, a compass, a protractor, and so on...

It was a total nostalgia trip back to his school days.

But he had to admit, the stationery, which looked like it was crafted from Obsidian, was indeed beautiful. It was like a sprinkle of gold dust on charcoal—a shimmering black that gave off a very high-end vibe.

"1 Gold Coin is too much. Lower," Kave said.

The boss replied, "Well, what’s your price?"

"Half a Gold Coin, tops." Kave went for the kill, slashing the price in half.

’He expected the boss to counter. According to the usual script, the boss would say 0.9, then he’d say 0.6. They’d test each other’s limits, and the final price would probably land at 0.75.’

But to his surprise, the boss just shoved the pen and pencil case into his hands. "Deal! Half a Gold Coin. Pay up!"

Kave froze.

’Damn it, why do I feel like I just got fleeced?’

’But he had already made the offer. It was his price, and he had to own it, even if it killed him.’

And so, under the gloating gazes of the others, Kave grit his teeth, broke the single Gold Coin he had painstakingly earned from his work-study job this past month in two, and gave half to the boss.

The boss tearfully pocketed a massive profit.

Eleanor teased, "Wow, I didn’t know we had such a sucker in our group. How about next time you give me a heads-up? I’ll go buy them wholesale and sell you five sets for half a Gold Coin. What do you say?"

Kave’s heart was bleeding, but he put on a brave face. "What do you know? This is the annual academic conference! If Her Highness the Saintess sees me with such an exquisite stationery set, she’ll definitely think I have a serious attitude!"

Elise mercilessly burst his bubble. "Nope."

"Based on my understanding of you and Her Highness the Saintess, she’d only have five words for a Wizard like you."

Kave asked instinctively, "What five words?"

Elise said, "Poor students have the best supplies."

Kave was speechless.

"BWAHAHAHA!" Johnson laughed so hard he could barely stand. "She’s not wrong! She’s really not wrong!"

Kave’s grade for the month had been a C, just barely passing. Wasn’t he the very definition of a poor student?

The main issue was that anyone who knew a little Magic could write in the air with their finger and erase it just as easily. There was absolutely no need for a special air pen and air eraser. It was completely and utterly redundant.

For once, Tony didn’t join in the group mockery. He couldn’t care less about stationery; his mind was completely preoccupied with Sean, his name a constant refrain. "You guys can stop just standing around chatting," he cut in. "Where’d that Sean fellow get to? Why isn’t he here yet?"

Elise couldn’t help but look at Ryan.

Ryan and Sean were roommates; they should have come over together.

But Ryan held up his hands, feigning innocence. "Don’t look at me. I don’t know either."

"Sean was already gone from the dorm when I woke up. I just assumed he’d come on ahead."

Johnson guessed, "Maybe he went to get his hair done?"

A big, lively event like today was no less festive than the New Year. They had all dressed up for the occasion, their hair neatly combed. You could lose anything, but you couldn’t lose face.

"Get his hair done without me?" Tony grew even more upset. ’What’s with this guy?’ he thought. ’Not only is he late, but he doesn’t even trust me.’

"Let’s wait a little longer," Eleanor said.

Unlike the others, she was secretly hoping Sean wouldn’t show up at all.

’Standing them up would be better than getting laughed at during the Table of Truth.’

’She wouldn’t mind being stood up this once.’
