’He can even spin this into a classic tale of a great family’s feuds and drama... Why don’t I just give you the pen and let you write the story?’
What Sean didn’t know was that Ryan not only had a rich imagination, but his logic was also meticulous.
As he spoke, he suddenly recalled the time Sean had snuck them all into the art exhibition gala.
Hadn’t Sean used the identity of the Blazing Angel Family back then?
’So that’s how it is!’
"I get it!"
"You really are part of the Blazing Angel Family!"
He had previously been puzzled as to why the Blazing Angel Family, who were affiliated with the Church Court, would help Sean, one of the "Holy Temple Remnants." But now... it all made sense!
His guess was right—Sean was the illegitimate son of the Blazing Angel Family!
Sean: "..."
To be honest, he was a little impressed with Ryan.
He usually didn’t say much, but when he did, his bizarre train of thought was truly astonishing.
Sean couldn’t explain this, so he could only sigh again. "If you say so."
"What do you mean, ’if I say so’?!"
Just as the two were talking, Tony entered the room.
Kave and Johnson were with him.
One look at the guy and Ryan knew he was here to "cause trouble" again. He couldn’t help but grumble, "You really don’t get tired, do you?"
After being tormented so badly today, instead of resting in bed, he still had the energy to visit other rooms.
Of course Tony did.
He was exhausted, to be sure. The old Scholar treated his students like he was fattening pigs for slaughter, just endlessly stuffing problems into their heads. But there were benefits to this sea of questions. Only by withstanding the trials of the labyrinth, the high tower, and the mountain of blades could one truly master the Truth Technique and stand out from the crowd of Wizards.
And as it happened, he was one of those who stood out.
The thought of facing off against Sean tomorrow, of defeating him fair and square to prove he was the best of the best, made Tony so excited he felt a surge of Power through his entire body.
That’s why he only lay in bed for a few minutes before immediately coming over.
He was here to issue a challenge!
An elegant Mage never launches a sneak attack, much less resorts to cheap tricks.
Although there were many participants in the Table of Truth, he didn’t care about any of them. He only cared about Sean, the one Laelando had taken an interest in from the very beginning. To him, all the other Wizards were just part of the audience, there to set the mood.
Tony was fired up. "Sean!"
"Let us have a fair duel, under the watchful eyes of thousands of spectators and Her Highness the Saintess!"
Of all the Wizards, he only had eyes for Sean. When the time came, Sean would only have eyes for him. In its own way, this was a unique romance between men.
Sean: "..."
Kave and the others: "..."
Seriously, they had no idea what Tony was so fired up about.
He was acting like they were fighting over a woman.
Tony didn’t even like Eleanor or Elise, yet he was dead set on outdoing Sean.
A man’s competitive drive could be really strange sometimes.
Sean could actually understand Tony.
After all, he’d been young once too.
It had nothing to do with girls. Even in a group of guys, who didn’t want to be in the spotlight?
Besides, "dueling" was a popular and respected tradition in both Wizard and noble circles. Sean wasn’t surprised by Tony’s "challenge." It was all in good fun, so there was no harm in accepting.
It’s just that...
"Personally, I’d love to accept your challenge," Sean said seriously, "but we’re not in the same race."
Tony: "?"
’We’re all contestants. What’s this about different races?’
’Does Sean think I’m doing this out of jealousy over the Eleanor Sisters?’
’Or maybe to show off in front of Her Highness the Saintess?’
’It doesn’t matter. None of that is important.’
’What’s important is who wins!’
’No matter what race we’re in, no matter what Sean’s identity is—whether he’s a descendant of the Holy Sanctuary like us or a direct heir of the Blazing Angel Family—it won’t affect this duel. Just like how I can’t use my Tier Six Magic Power. The Table of Truth is a contest of Truth Technique. Beyond that, all other abilities and identities are useless.’
"Just nod or say you accept. Stop making excuses." Tony snorted deliberately. "Don’t make me look down on you."
Sean: "..."
’Great, now he’s trying to taunt me into it.’
It was clear that Tony really wanted to win.
To be so confident meant that the past month of study must have helped him improve a lot.
"Alright, then. If you still want to compete when the time comes, we’ll give it a shot," Sean agreed.
Kave was eager. "Count me in."
Johnson: "Me too!"
They weren’t targeting Sean; they just wanted in on the excitement.
It was like a bunch of brothers in a dorm room, always having to compete over something to see who was top dog.
"Alright, alright, everyone’s in."
Sean looked at Ryan. "Why don’t you join too?"
Ryan was suspicious. "I’m getting a weird feeling about you."
His attitude had changed too quickly, from his initial reluctance to now actively inviting him to join. It was so fast that it made Ryan feel like Sean had just been putting on an act when he first refused to duel Tony.
But since everyone else had joined, he’d seem antisocial if he didn’t participate, so he had no choice but to agree.
"It’s settled then! We’ll see each other tomorrow!" Tony said.
"Oh, right. Elise asked me to pass on a message to you, which is also what I wanted to say—"
"Whatever you do, don’t be late tomorrow!"
’Skipping class is one thing, but he can’t possibly miss the Table of Truth, can he?’
That was something Sean had said he wanted to attend the very day he arrived in the city.
Sean smiled and nodded. "Don’t worry, I’ll definitely be there on time."
Word of this quickly reached Elise’s ears.
The young woman was currently washing up and brushing her teeth. Seeing the text on her phone, she was so happy that white foam flew from her mouth. "Sister, Sean promised he’ll be there tomorrow!"
Eleanor, who was watching TV on the sofa, said nonchalantly, "So what if he’s going? What’s there to be excited about?"
Elise pumped her little fists at the mirror. "Because I think Sean can beat Teacher Tony so badly he won’t know what hit him!"
Lately, because he’d been doing well in the Truth Technique class and learning quickly, Tony had gotten a huge ego. He was showing off in front of everyone every day, acting like a total brat. Elise really wanted to teach him a lesson.
Unfortunately, she had no real Talent for the Truth Technique. Given Mr. Scholar’s temper, he should have told her to pack her books and get lost long ago. But for some reason, Mr. Scholar’s patience had improved remarkably recently. He hadn’t scolded her or kicked her out...
’Maybe it’s because I’m cute?’
’Even if my grades aren’t good, I work hard and I’m obedient!’
In any case, Elise couldn’t do anything about Tony, so she hoped Sean could put him in his place for her.
Eleanor’s mood, however, was the complete opposite of her sister’s.
She also hoped Sean would win—after all, she had been looking out for him since they first met. But she didn’t have the same confidence in Sean as her sister, Elise. She didn’t even understand why Elise thought Sean could beat Tony.
She might have seemed indifferent about whether Sean came to class, and she never interrupted when Elise and Sean were chatting, nor did she text him herself. But in reality, Eleanor had secretly gone to see Laelando.
When Laelando saw the young woman come to his office, he thought she was going to ask why he had suddenly agreed to take her on as a student. Instead, Eleanor asked about Sean—
"Mr. Scholar, how come Sean hasn’t been coming to class lately?"
She couldn’t just directly ask Laelando if he was giving Sean private lessons.
And Mr. Scholar’s answer was: "Him... I can’t teach him."
Laelando kept a stern face from morning till night to maintain his serious scholarly image. Because of this, when Eleanor heard his words, her heart sank. ’This is bad,’ she thought. ’It seems Sean has offended Mr. Scholar. He’s clearly angry.’
’Maybe the only reason Mr. Scholar agreed to take us was because Sean was disobedient, and he didn’t want him anymore.’
’How could there be any private lessons in that case?’
And without Mr. Scholar’s guidance, how could Sean possibly compete with a top student like Teacher Tony?
Yet Sean had still promised to attend the Table of Truth on time.
Eleanor was genuinely worried that Sean would embarrass himself tomorrow.
But no amount of worrying would help.
What was to come, would come.
After a restless night of tossing and turning, the sun rose from the horizon as usual.
But unlike other days, a giant golden ring appeared beneath the sun today.
It was like a colossal vessel, holding and lifting the entire sun.
Countless tiny characters floated above the ring, weaving and colliding without any pattern, like a mesh filter.
The sunlight filtered through it, blanketing the silhouette of Black Rose Castle, and for a moment, made the castle transform into the likeness of the Hall of Truth.
Diana stood on the 7th Floor, gazing toward the Wizard Dormitory, and spoke softly:
"It’s time to come home, Mr. Sean Black."
