"Achoo!"
Inside the dorm, Sean suddenly sneezed.
’My sister-in-law finally remembered me?’
He pulled out a tissue to rub his nose, then took out his phone to check it.
But there were no messages from Elvire.
Sean: "..."
It was a scene of déjà vu.
"What in the world is that girl up to?"
Sean was not happy.
It had been almost a month with no response, making him feel like he was playing a single-player game by himself.
He hadn’t originally planned on going to the Blazing Angel Family’s territory. Seeing Daeli would be wonderful, but not being able to reveal his identity would be agonizing. Plus, if Elvire discovered he was her brother-in-law and Daeli found out he was close with her sister, he’d be in for a world of hurt when the two of them ganged up on him.
Besides, he’d been quite confident in Elvire’s ability to get things done.
One of them was to investigate the Saintess, while the other was to "visit the prisoners"—to find the captured members of the Florist Family and ask about the Witch Hunt Operation. Tackling it from two sides was far more efficient than teaming up.
But who knew Elvire would drop the ball midway through?
Sean was also a little worried that the girl had actually run into some danger. He decided that as soon as the Table of Truth business was over, he would leave the city immediately and make a trip to the Blazing Angel Family’s territory.
He was going to see for himself just what was going on that kept his sister-in-law from even having time to send a single message.
Having made up his mind, Sean put down his phone and began to meditate again.
He wanted to try and break through to Tier Four before heading to the Blazing Angel Family, so that if he did run into any crisis, he’d have a better chance of escaping.
But advancing Tiers wasn’t that easy.
Going from Tier Three to Tier Four required an increase of 40 Lak in Magic Power. For a Low-tier Wizard, this was no small amount. What’s more, he had entered this "New World" from the Void Technique Space. Meditating here was like "dreaming within a dream within a dream." On top of that, he was cultivating using *The Beginning of Forbidden Curse*. With all those debuffs stacked against him, the difficulty was cranked way up.
As a result, Sean had spent the entire month in deep meditation, his days split between following news about Saintess Diana and cultivating. Yet, even on the night before the Table of Truth, he still hadn’t broken through and remained at Tier Three.
’Still need about π Lak...’
Sean frowned, very dissatisfied with his cultivation speed.
"What’s ’pie Lak’?" Ryan asked, having just returned from his class at the church.
He’d only ever heard of Patrick.
"Magic Power," Sean replied. "I’m almost at Tier Four."
"Oh, Magic Power..." Ryan, his face etched with exhaustion, tossed his book onto the table, then flopped onto his bed in a starfish pose.
These past few days, he, Teacher Tony, and the others had been put through the wringer. One moment it was the Maze of Truth, the next it was the Maze Tower. In class today, Laelando had even conjured up a mountain of blades and a sea of questions, claiming that since the Table of Truth was tomorrow, he was helping them acclimate to its difficulty...
Heaven knows how many times he’d been stabbed by the blades constructed from the Truth Technique.
It wasn’t just mentally exhausting; his body had suffered too.
That’s why Ryan had immediately collapsed on his bed upon returning, not wanting to move another inch.
But after lying there for a moment, something felt off.
"Wait, did you just say you’re almost at Tier Four?"
Sean: "Yeah."
Ryan: "How much is ’almost’?"
"I already told you. I’m off by π," Sean said. "About 3 Lak."
Ryan: "?"
He shot up from the bed, his eyes wide. "But didn’t you only have a little over ten Lak before?"
There’s a noticeable difference between a new Tier Three and an old one. It’s not like Sean hadn’t used Magic in front of them before. As Tier Six Wizards, three Tiers higher than Sean, they could clearly sense that his Magic Power had only just entered the Tier Three range, no more than 15 Lak at most.
But how long had it been?
In one month, he went from 15 to 48, a full 33 Lak increase. That’s an average of over 1 Lak per day?
"Are you on potions??"
Sean: "?"
’You’re the one on potions,’ Sean thought. Broke as he was, he was still relying on Elise to reimburse his daily meal expenses. How could he possibly afford Magic Potions?
"Are you offering to buy them for me?"
"No, no, no, that’s not it!"
Ryan belatedly realized that even Magic Potions couldn’t boost a Wizard’s Magic Power conversion rate to that degree. Otherwise, cultivating at a rate of 1 Lak per day, wouldn’t someone be able to go from zero to Grand Mage in just seven years?
What an international joke!
"There’s something up with you!" Ryan came to a conclusion.
Either Sean was lying to him, or there was something strange about him. He wasn’t the "refugee" Wizard they’d thought he was—homeless and forced to come to Blake City by the pressure from the Church Court—but rather the direct heir of some great family with a unique Meditation Secret Technique.
And not just any great family, either.
It would have to be a Duke’s family, at the very least. Otherwise, they’d never be able to hold on to a Secret Technique like that.
"And you call this fast?"
Sean let out a soft sigh. "I was just thinking I’m a good-for-nothing."
Ryan: "?"
’You motherf... You call going from Tier Three to the brink of Tier Four in a single month being a good-for-nothing? Then what does that make a genius like me, who "only" took a year or two to go from Three to Four in the eyes of ordinary Wizards?’
’Such a humblebrag!’
Grumbling aside, Ryan quickly adopted a serious expression and looked at Sean. "We’ve known each other for a while now, and we’re pretty good friends. So, level with me. Are you the illegitimate son of some Duke? And were you kicked out of your family and forced to wander to Blake City for some unspeakable reason—like, say, you believe in the Holy Sanctuary instead of the Church Court?"
Sean: "..."
He was discovering that his teammate had quite the rich imagination, no worse than his own as a writer.
