In response to Kave’s blunt question, Johnson slapped him right back.
"Does it hurt?"
"If it hurts, it’s not a dream."
Saying something like that, it was clear neither of them understood Dream Science.
But the pain was very real.
They had slapped each other back to their senses. Their gazes on Sean were no longer a mixture of shock and doubt; the doubt had vanished. They were certain they weren’t mistaken—this was the Sean they knew. The emotion in their eyes morphed into pure shock.
As for Tony...
He had practically turned into a statue. Eyes wide, thunderstruck, motionless, filled with disbelief... he looked like a gargoyle shocked into a petrified slumber.
’Could someone please tell me what the hell is going on?’
’Why is Sean an Honorary Judge??’
’What right does he have?!’
The moment Sean took his seat at the Table, he noticed Tony staring at him as if he’d seen a ghost. He could only respond with an innocent expression.
’I told you before. We’re not on the same track.’
’You’re the contestant, and I’m the judge. How is that even a competition?’
Tony: "???"
He understood the meaning behind Sean’s expression, and his face instantly flushed beet-red.
’You bastard... Why didn’t you just say so?!’
’Without a single hint, who the hell would’ve known that’s what you meant by "not on the same track"?!’
In the audience, the Eleanor Sisters were also stunned.
Elise’s mouth was slightly agape. Although no sound came out, you could read her lips and tell what she was saying—
"What the f...?"
"Is that really him? Sean??"
The Table of Truth was incredibly strict. Even Wizards who wished to compete had to pass a screening process to earn a seat, to say nothing of the Judges.
Take Mr. Scholar Laelando, for example. In all of False Heaven, he was widely regarded as the person with the deepest understanding of the Truth Technique, which was why he was the chief Judge. The other sub-Judges, like the Poet and the Paper Pianist, were also formidable. The Lady was the most familiar face among them, as she herself had once sat in a contestant’s seat and won first place at a previous Table of Truth.
This effectively told everyone that to become a Judge, you needed to be at least on the Lady’s level.
And as a specially invited Honorary Judge, his abilities had to be even more impressive. Otherwise, how could he live up to the titles "specially invited" and "honorary"?
"No wonder he didn’t want to come to class..."
"So Sean is actually that incredible?"
Elise was both shocked and delighted, but with a slight hint of uncertainty, she looked to Eleanor as if to ask a question.
Eleanor, however, just looked dazed, as if to say, ’I don’t know either...’
Ever since she’d met Sean, all she knew was that he was Tier Three. Other than being easy on the eyes, there didn’t seem to be anything particularly outstanding about him... at least, nothing she had ever sensed.
But now, Sean was sitting on the Judges’ panel, and Laelando’s words couldn’t help but resurface in her mind—
"Oh, him... I can’t teach him."
’So when he said "I can’t teach him," it wasn’t out of anger? He meant it literally?’
’Because Sean’s understanding of the Truth Technique is on par with his, or maybe even better??’
"That jerk, he kept this from us for so long and made us worry for nothing." Elise shook her fist, pretending to be angry, but her smiling eyes betrayed her inner delight. "When the Table of Truth is over, I’m going to ask him on a proper date... I mean, I’m going to properly settle the score with him!"
For a girl like Elise, the devastating effect of Sean’s good looks was no less potent than Diana’s effect on men. And if you added talent and strength that far surpassed his peers to the mix...
Elise’s heart skipped a beat.
’Maybe I should just go be Sean’s "little puppy"?’
Although Sean’s "talent" had yet to be demonstrated, Elise was certain of one thing: Her Highness the Saintess, Lady Catherine, and Mr. Scholar were not people who would joke about such matters. Quite the opposite; if Sean’s abilities were even slightly exaggerated, they would be the very first to throw him from the Table.
But they hadn’t.
Sean took his seat calmly. Laelando even nodded to him, a rare smile gracing his usually stern and serious face. This was proof that Sean had already earned Laelando’s respect, a fact that surprised his fellow Judges, like the Lady and the others.
They didn’t actually know Sean; they simply wouldn’t question his position. Just as Elise had thought, Sean’s presence here meant he surely had the approval of Her Highness the Saintess, and it wasn’t their place to object.
But Laelando’s attitude was rather thought-provoking.
As was well known, Mr. Scholar was a "pedantic" old academic who judged people solely on their knowledge. As he put it, "The more accomplished one is the master." This meant, ’If you are my inferior, then I am your teacher, and it is only right that I remain stern with you.’ It was for this very reason that even they, the sub-Judges, rarely got a pleasant expression out of Laelando.
Yet now, Laelando was actively greeting this young man.
That smile was oddly smooth, like he’d accidentally smeared his face with cream from a morning puff pastry.
Seeing his own master treat Sean with such respect and courtesy, Tony felt a stinging slap across his face. He held his breath, his own face growing redder and redder. After the incident with the ’Two-Way Scam’ to get into the ball, he once again felt like a complete clown...
The difference was, this time, he refused to accept it!
After all, he had never personally seen Sean use a Truth Technique.
Like many young people, Tony was stubborn—the type who wouldn’t believe the truth until it was staring him right in the face.
But being unconvinced didn’t change anything.
Because they really were on different tracks...
The Table of Truth was nothing like the lax internal competitions held by some noble families. Even if he mustered the courage to question Sean and issue a challenge, he wasn’t even qualified for Sean to accept. The most likely outcome was that he’d simply be thrown out by the Knight Order.
