The Most Arbitrary Wizard

Chapter 263 141: 3=8 (Part 1)

It's true the test paper didn't say it was mathematics.

Sean let out a soft snort and continued, "Do you people even know what you're here for?"

"This is the Table of Truth. The test is on the Truth Technique."

"What is the Truth Technique?"

"It's Mysticism!"

"Mysticism includes mathematics, but it isn't *just* mathematics. It also includes physics, chemistry, linguistics, philosophy, and even sociology... Do I really have to teach you something so fundamental?"

"Did you all think this proof was just some clever trick?"

"Wrong!"

"Let me tell you, while this may be a proof problem, the point isn't the proof itself. It's about getting you to look at things from a different perspective."

"Mysticism has no boundaries. It is as vast and infinite as the cosmos. Who among you can guarantee that the rigorous mathematics we currently hold to be true applies to every corner of this time and space?"

"You can't, can you?"

"That's right, you can't."

"The Truth Technique is divided into four levels: Understand the Truth, Believe in the Truth, Question the Truth, and finally, I Am the Truth."

"Why is a man called a 'man,' and a woman called a 'woman'? Isn't everything in this world defined by us humans—by us Wizards?"

"So-called truths, so-called laws... they're nothing more than concepts summarized and named by our predecessors."

"If you can't even grasp that, after studying the Truth Technique for so long, and you're still stuck on the second level... well, your assessment of yourself was correct."

"You really are stupid!"

"And the rest of you."

Sean's rapid-fire speech stunned the Male Wizard into silence.

And it wasn't just the Male Wizard. Wherever Sean's gaze swept, everyone, including Laelando, guiltily lowered their heads.

'He was right. They had studied Mysticism and the Truth Technique for a lifetime—for generations, even—yet they had never once thought to look at things from a different angle.'

'Those laws and formulas were like the rules of the Table of Truth: rigid and unchanging. But a person's way of thinking was flexible. They could follow the principles their predecessors had laid out to continue their exploration, but they couldn't be confined by them. If a skyscraper isn't torn down and rebuilt, it can never reach greater heights.'

'With a shaky foundation, it was bound to collapse sooner or later.'

In the audience, the Wizards began to whisper among themselves.

"You know, I think he's actually right..."

"The important thing about this problem isn't the answer, it's the mindset... It just clicked!"

"This Teacher Sean really knows his stuff!"

"Look, even Mr. Scholar is getting a lecture, and he's the Librarian of the Holy Sanctuary! Just what kind of background does this Teacher Sean have?"

Elise, meanwhile, watched Sean with shining eyes. 'He's so handsome when he's lecturing people,' she thought. 'All these Wizards and Judges, and not a single one dares to interrupt. They're all just taking it meekly. It's so cool!'

Just then, the Male Wizard, flustered and angered by the lecture, finally found a point for rebuttal.

His face flushed red as he said, "I admit what you're saying makes sense, but the questions for the Table of Truth are supposed to be linked to the Truth Technique, not just simple academic exercises."

'Otherwise, what's the difference between this and some middle or high school exam?'

'Was the question itself the point?'

'No, the hidden Truth Technique within it was!'

'They weren't solving problems for the sake of solving problems; they were doing it to familiarize themselves with the various expressions of the Truth Technique, to one day use them against their enemies. In other words, every question on the test should have a practical combat application. But 3=8...'

"Forgive me for being slow."

"But I really can't see any practical use for '3=8'!"

'Never mind trapping an enemy; if it's just for a simple crowd-control effect, plenty of other techniques can do that. Why does it have to be '3=8'?'

Sean couldn't help but laugh.

'This guy looks pretty old,' Sean thought. 'Why is he just like Teacher Tony, so stubborn he won't give up until he's at a dead end?'

'Does he really think I just pulled '3=8' out of thin air?'

'Why '3=8' and not, say, '4=8'?'

'It's because I'm only Tier Three, of course!'

"You want to know what '3=8' can do?"

"Fine."

"You're a Grand Mage, right?"

"Get up here and take a beating!"

Everyone: "???"
