The Most Arbitrary Wizard

Chapter 264 142: 3=8 (Part 2)

The wizard was, indeed, a Grand Mage.

This was why he dared to question Sean in public.

After all, Grand Mages were powerful and rare. Even if he acted and spoke impulsively, people would generally give him some leeway out of respect for his Tier.

But he never imagined that after a single self-deprecating comment about his own stupidity, Sean would actually seize on it and give him a dressing-down.

If it were just a scolding, he could have let it slide. He knew he was in the wrong and would have just endured it. But Sean seemed to think a mere lecture wasn't enough. In response to his reasonable question, Sean actually told him to come up and take a beating...

'Don't I have any pride?!'

An uproar broke out in the audience.

"Damn, did I hear that right?"

"He told a Grand Mage to come up and take a beating??"

"Nooo! If they really fight, the Table of Truth will be destroyed!"

"Surely Her Highness the Saintess will put a stop to it?"

A fight between Grand Mages was no laughing matter. The average person couldn't even withstand the shockwaves from their colliding Magic Power. If they got serious, the entire Black Rose Castle would be in jeopardy.

"I really didn't see this coming. For Teacher Sean to be a Grand Mage at his age…"

The Table of Truth was quite far from the audience, so no one could sense Sean's aura to determine his Tier. However, most people assumed that for Sean to have the gall to tell a Grand Mage to come up and take a beating, he must be a Grand Mage himself. Otherwise, wouldn't he just be serving himself up on a platter?

That is, until they heard a sweet, girlish voice cry out in alarm.

"Is this guy insane?!"

The voice, of course, belonged to Elise.

The young woman stared at Sean at the Table of Truth, her face a mask of disbelief. She couldn't fathom why he would dare say such a thing.

She had thought Teacher Tony, who kept boasting he'd knock everyone down and take first place at this Table of Truth, was already arrogant. But she never expected Sean to be even more conceited!

"He's only Tier Three!"

"How does he have the nerve to tell a Grand Mage to take a beating?"

"Sister, look at him!"

"You have to talk some sense into him!"

Eleanor: "..."

She could see her sister was frantic, and frankly, so was she.

But the problem was, how was she supposed to do that?!

She wasn't qualified to go up to the Table of Truth, and it's not like she could just call Sean and expect him to answer, could she?

The people nearby overheard Elise and were stunned.

"What?"

"Teacher Sean is only Tier Three??"

"Then how did he become an Honorary Judge?"

"Crap, we forgot something!"

"The Table of Truth is a contest of Truth Technique, which has nothing to do with Magic Power…"

In other words, as long as your understanding of the Truth Technique was deep enough, you could sit on the Judge's panel even if you were just an ordinary person with no Magic Power. This was the principle Mr. Scholar championed: "Let the proficient be the teacher."

A Grand Mage's senses were incredibly sharp. Hearing the murmurs from the audience, the Male Wizard grew even more furious. Shock and anger warred on his face as he asked, his expression dark, "Teacher Sean, are you really only Tier Three??"

He still addressed Sean with a respectful title, but everyone could hear the fury in his voice.

But Sean shot back, perfectly self-assured, "That's right, I'm Tier Three."

"So what if I'm Tier Three?"

"Are you looking down on me?"

The crowd: "?"

The Male Wizard: "?"

'Do you even hear yourself?'

'Do you have any idea who you're talking to?'

'I'm a goddamn Tier Seven Grand Mage! Am I supposed to respect a Tier Three like you??'

Seeing him hesitate, Sean grew impatient. "You talk too much."

"Don't you want to know what '3=8' is good for?"

"Get up here!"

The wizard laughed.

It was a laugh born of pure rage.

"Fine! Just fine!"

"Since Teacher Sean insists on giving me, his student, a live demonstration, I will naturally accept the lesson."

"I just hope Teacher Sean won't regret it when he discovers he's incapable of teaching me anything!"

The Male Wizard snarled through gritted teeth.

"It's happening… They're really going to fight…"

"No! Teacher Sean is so handsome! You old geezer, you're not allowed to bully him!"

"A Tier Seven fighting a Tier Three… Have you no shame?"

Many of the Female Wizards in the audience began to stick up for Sean.

For a moment, even Sean was thrown off.

'First off, let me be clear, these aren't plants I hired.'

'And second, I'm a Tier Three provoking a Tier Seven. Shouldn't they be mocking me?'

'Why are they defending me instead?'

The Male Wizard was so angry he could have coughed up blood.

'Son of a beach! Who the hell is bullying who here?!'

'Sean was the one who told me to come up and take a beating, so how did it turn into me wanting to beat up Sean??'

'Dammit!'

'Ever since becoming a Grand Mage, I've never been so thoroughly humiliated!'

'It's all this arrogant young punk's fault!'

"Teacher Sean, please enlighten me!"

Filled with suppressed fury, the Male Wizard leaped from his seat, landing right in the center of the Table of Truth.

Seeing the situation spiraling out of control, Catherine couldn't help but look to Diana, her eyes silently asking Her Highness the Saintess for instructions.

In principle, brawling was forbidden at the Table of Truth.

It was meant to be an elegant academic forum. Any disputes were to be "battles of wits," with the use of Magic strictly prohibited.

This was especially true for a conflict with such a massive power disparity.

At the end of the day, they were all on the same side. If someone got hurt and blood was drawn, how would that look?

But rules could be bent, principles could have exceptions, and boundaries could be pushed, one step at a time.

That's how it had been for Olivia back then.

She had never believed Carl Black could pull things off and would bet against him, only to lose every time. He used those opportunities to get a hold on her, pulling her in deeper and deeper...

Though that was all in the distant past—she was no longer Olivia, but Diana—she still remembered Carl Black's methods. The man almost never did anything he wasn't confident he could win.
