The Most Arbitrary Wizard
Chapter 272 144: You Should Call Me Great-GrandfatherThe sixth floor was the living area, with plenty of recreational facilities that were rarely used. Its primary function was dining. High-ranking confidantes of the Saintess, like Catherine, usually ate on this floor, as did Diana herself.
The top floor above it was where Diana lived. Other than her lady-in-waiting, Catherine, and some Maids who tended to her daily needs, no one else had ever been to this floor.
"You're the first man Her Highness the Saintess has ever allowed onto the 7th Floor."
Catherine said to Sean in the elevator, her gaze profoundly meaningful.
She was sizing up Sean, trying to see what was so special about this man.
When Diana invited Sean at the round table that afternoon, her words hadn't just stunned the crowd of Wizards; they had astonished Catherine as well.
From the very beginning, Her Highness the Saintess had paid an excessive amount of attention to this newcomer, Sean. Today, she had even personally and publicly invited him to a private meeting. It was hard for Catherine not to read into it.
'Could Her Highness the Saintess be swayed by looks, too? Has she taken a fancy to this young man?'
Sean dodged the unspoken question, showing just the right amount of surprise. "Are we really going to Her Highness the Saintess's room?"
"What else?" Catherine huffed, then warned, "Be polite. Don't look where you shouldn't, and don't ask what you shouldn't. If you anger Her Highness the Saintess, you'll have only yourself to blame."
Sean nodded earnestly. "Don't worry, I know how to behave."
The elevator quickly reached the top floor.
The moment the doors opened, Sean caught a strange, elegant, and faint scent—it was both familiar and unfamiliar.
He couldn't help but ask warily, "This scent... it's not poisonous, is it?"
Catherine: "?"
'Poison, my ass.'
'Any normal person would smell the fragrance in a girl's room and let their imagination run wild. But this guy... he actually suspects Her Highness the Saintess of poisoning the air...'
Catherine rolled her eyes. "This is a Magic Potion Her Highness the Saintess is burning as incense especially for you. It aids your Mental Power. Consider it one of your rewards for today's excellent performance."
Now Sean was genuinely surprised. "Magic Potions can be burned like incense?"
"It's not just incense. There are plenty of methods you've never heard of." Catherine couldn't be bothered to explain it to this bumpkin. She led him to Diana's door and said, "Go on in. Don't keep Her Highness the Saintess waiting."
After saying this, she withdrew.
Although she was intensely curious about what Her Highness the Saintess and Sean would discuss, her curiosity had its limits. She wouldn't eavesdrop on things she wasn't supposed to know.
The moment Catherine left, Sean immediately demonstrated his so-called "poise."
He first straightened his collar, knocked on the door, and called out, "Her Highness the Saintess."
"Come in."
As soon as he heard Diana tell him to enter, he casually pushed the door open, plopped down on a luxurious loveseat, and only then began to survey the fragrant bedroom. He looked as if he owned the place, utterly devoid of courtesy.
Diana, standing by the window, was left speechless.
'This guy really makes himself at home.'
'Still, this is a good thing.'
'It means Sean might have recognized me.'
'It took him long enough, but at least he figured it out before I had to do anything. It's not too late. If he says a few things I want to hear, I suppose I could forgive him for being so dense.'
But, to her surprise, Sean's reaction was the complete opposite of what she'd imagined.
Not only had Sean failed to recognize her, he was treating her like an "enemy."
Sean, still on the sofa, crossed his legs and brazenly surveyed everything in the room—everything except her. Then, he asked nonchalantly, "So, Her Highness the Saintess. What did you want to see me about?"
Diana: "..."
'Very well.'
'I didn't want anything, but now, you're in big trouble.'
She raised her beautiful eyes and looked directly at Sean. "Can't I summon you unless I have a reason?"
Sean was noncommittal. "From what I know of Her Highness the Saintess, you're not one to be this idle."
"Her Highness the Saintess always has a purpose for everything she does—and usually more than one. So let's just be direct."
"Ask whatever you want to ask. When you're done, then it'll be my turn to ask you questions."
Diana: "?"
'What does he mean by that?'
'Is he insinuating that I'm a manipulative woman?'
From those few words, Diana was certain: Sean hadn't made the connection to Olivia at all.
'Perhaps the person named Olivia doesn't even exist in his mind anymore.'
'In that case, why should I be polite?'
The light in Diana's bright eyes instantly went cold.
"Sean, you'd best watch your attitude."
'Since he hasn't recognized me, what right does he have to speak to me—a Saintess of the Church Court—in such a tone?'
"Who do you think you are?"
"Good question."
Sean clapped his hands as he stood up. "Who am I? Doesn't Her Highness the Saintess already have an idea?"
"And you're asking about my attitude."
"Perhaps Her Highness the Saintess should think about her own attitude."
'Today, I'm going to embody the presence of Carl Black to the very end!'
'After all, the Saintess before me is Tier Ten. I have to overpower her with sheer presence, or I'll never get the upper hand.'
'So, I'll start by putting Diana in her place!'
Diana laughed in anger. "Then what attitude do you think I should have?"
'I'm the dignified Saintess of the Church Court. Do I really need to act based on someone else's whims?'
"Still playing dumb?" Sean sneered. "Don't you already know who I am?"
"And so what if I do?" Diana shot back.
'Does this guy really think the name Carl Black is enough to intimidate me?'
But then Sean sighed. "You Saintesses of the Church Court... each generation is worse than the last."
"In terms of etiquette, at least, you don't have a shred of the proper upbringing."
"Since you've guessed my identity, you should know that the First Saintess, Olivia, was my wife. You are merely one of the many Saintesses who succeeded her. In terms of seniority, I'm countless generations your senior."
"Don't think I don't know. Your Church Court might look like the imperial courts of old, pretending to appoint people based on merit, but in reality, it's still just one big family. A position as important as the Saintess would never fall to someone outside the direct Elderidge line. You must be related to Olivia. For all I know, the blood of Olivia and me might even flow in your veins. So..."
"...drop the high and mighty act."
"What you should be doing now is calling me Great-Grandfather. Understand?"
Diana: "?"
'Call him what?'
"Say that again?"
