The Most Arbitrary Wizard

Chapter 338 - 164: A Grave Matter

"And that’s why I must be the one to become Governor!"

Pulente declared with an air of self-righteousness, "Only I can make the lives of the people of Siracle State better!"

Sean gave a very sincere, firm nod. "Yes, I believe you!"

’A veteran politician, through and through.’

’He could have just agreed, but no, he had to go and put down all his rivals while he was at it.’

Sean, however, didn’t actually care about any of that.

Because people can change.

’And if they don’t change on their own, he’ll help them along.’

Regardless of this Puppet’s character before rising to power, Sean had plenty of ways to mold him into the man he wanted him to be.

Just then, Eleanor, who had gone to sort through the tycoon’s memories, returned. She bowed to Sean and said, "Master, it’s done."

Sean nodded. "Perfect timing. We’re done over here, too."

Pulente: "?"

’What does he mean, "done"?’

’What does he take me for?’

He immediately boomed, "I’ll say it again, I am doing this for the people of Siracle State!"

’Violence cannot make me yield. I am making this sacrifice willingly, for the sake of Siracle State!’

Sean, playing along perfectly, put on a solemn expression and offered a respectful salute. "Mr. Governor, your righteousness is truly noble."

Pulente: "Hmph!"

Sean smiled. "If I’m not mistaken, Mr. Governor, you have a speech tomorrow afternoon in Old Segal City. We won’t disturb you any longer. You should get some rest and not disappoint your supporters."

With that, Sean prepared to leave with the three women.

Pulente: "?"

"You’re leaving just like that?"

Sean glanced back. "What else?"

Pulente asked, "What about the specific terms of our cooperation and the details of the project?"

’Aren’t we going to sign a contract or something?’

"No rush," Sean said. "When you’re free, Mr. Governor, someone will contact you."

This statement had a double meaning.

The first was a statement of their stance. Although they had resorted to force tonight, one could say they’d gotten acquainted through conflict. He was a "Puppet," but the strings wouldn’t be that tight. They would respect the office of Governor when appropriate and give Pulente enough personal space.

The second was the subtext.

’We know when you have free time, which naturally means we also know what you’re doing when you don’t.’

’So don’t even think about pulling any tricks. We know your every move.’

"We’re off, Mr. Governor. I look forward to our next meeting."

"No need to see us out."

Pulente: "..."

’I wasn’t going to see them out in the first place.’

’The nerve of that guy!’

"CLICK."

Sean and the others left the room, gently closing the door behind them.

This "cooperation" had been much easier than he had imagined.

Seeing the way this group of Wizards had stormed the hospital, Pulente had thought Sean was going to force him to sign an unfair treaty tonight. He’d been prepared to endure it for the time being, ready to sign whatever they put in front of him just to placate them. Then, he would have gone to call for reinforcements.

But he never expected Sean to just leave like that.

They had confirmed a mere intention to cooperate and then left, completely at ease, as if they weren’t the least bit afraid he would go back on his word.

"...Fine by me."

Pulente stared at the closed door, his gaze darkening. "You’re the ones who decided to leave."

He had warned Sean before that he had powerful backers, but Sean had told him that distant water can’t put out a nearby fire.

But now, Sean had given him a chance to do just that.

He couldn’t be blamed for what he was about to do.

To be honest, if Sean hadn’t shown his hand tonight by forcefully reversing his Ring of Truth, Pulente wouldn’t have turned on him so quickly. No matter how strong Sean was, in the face of Pulente’s backers, he was nothing but a tiny ant that could be crushed at any time. From that angle, the situation was still within his control. Pulente wouldn’t have minded feigning compliance, playing along with Sean’s little group to ascertain the Wizards’ true purpose before reporting back to his superiors.

But the moment the Truth Technique was revealed, the nature of the situation changed entirely.

Pulente had a terrifying suspicion, but he had kept it buried deep inside, letting none of it show on his face.

It was common knowledge that the Truth Technique was the most difficult path of Magic. On this point, it made no difference whether the learner was one of the Holy Temple Remnants or not, because one of the introductory theoretical courses for the Truth Technique was advanced mathematics. And in the face of advanced mathematics, everyone is equal. It didn’t matter what your status was—if you didn’t get it, you just didn’t get it.

The fact that he had been able to learn the Ring of Truth already made him a genius among geniuses. It was precisely for this reason that his superiors had taken notice of him and entrusted him with great responsibility. It could be said that although he was not one of the Heretics from the Holy Sanctuary, his understanding of the Truth Technique was deeper than that of most of them. And the deeper his understanding, the more he grasped just how terrifying Sean’s seemingly simple maneuver truly was.

’Controlling another’s Technique... To accomplish that, one’s understanding of the Truth Technique must be at least three levels higher than one’s opponent.’

Based on that point alone, Pulente was certain that Sean had to be a Reshaper from the Hall of Truth.

And his status before being reshaped was not low... in fact, it was extremely high.

At least at the level of someone who once swept the floors of the Holy Sanctuary.

Even those legendary floor-sweeping monks and librarians, after long ages and multiple reshapings had caused them to lose their memories, wouldn’t necessarily remember the essentials of the Truth Technique to the degree Sean did.

Then there were the rampant rumors from a while back about a certain "great man" returning from the dead in the Void Technique Space. Plus, Sean was so handsome that even an old man like himself had to admit it, and he seemed to have absolutely no regard for any Grand Mage...

And so.

An utterly absurd, and utterly terrifying, idea surfaced in Pulente’s mind.

If it were true, he couldn’t afford to waste a single second. He had to report this information to his superiors with the utmost speed.

Otherwise, the situation could truly spiral out of control at any moment.

This was no longer a simple matter of him being bullied and running to get help. This concerned a matter of grave importance to the entire Empire, especially since his Master despised this "great man" to the core. Therefore, for reasons both public and private, logical and emotional, he had to turn coat immediately.

As for tomorrow’s speech...

Whoever wanted to go could go.

He had been shot during the day and hit with a Phoenix Curse at night. He was severely injured. It was perfectly reasonable to take two days off and postpone the speech, wasn’t it?

Pulente wasn’t afraid of Sean seeing through his ploy.

As long as he delivered the message, his superiors would realize the gravity of the situation and would certainly dispatch a real Grand Mage to investigate. Perhaps the leaders themselves would even come in person. When that happened, no one would be able to touch him.

Thinking of this, Pulente decided to leave.

Tonight!

This was too important. There was no time to lose.

"Someone, get the jet ready!"

...

「Three in the morning.」

「Alola Town.」

Sean and the others had just returned, but they hadn’t gone to bed.

Not only were they awake, but the four of them were also in the church, waiting in stern formation. Sean and Elvire were sitting while the Eleanor Sisters stood, their postures upright and serious, as if they were waiting for news.

Soon, the news arrived.

The cell phone on the table began to vibrate.

It was a call from Elise.

"You really guessed right, Mr. Writer."

She got straight to the point. "Pulente left Holkaydo on a private jet. Based on his heading, he’s not going to Old Segal City."

"Then where is he going?" Sean asked. "Can you deduce his destination?"

"No," Elise said. Deducing a flight path was too much to ask of her. "But I did find out."

Planes had to file a flight plan before takeoff, and after the last mid-air ambush, the Dawn Council had bought off a few people in the aviation administration. Now, that investment was paying off.

"He’s going to New Elderidge," Elise said.

Sean looked at the Eleanor Sisters.

Elise nodded. "We came from near New Elderidge."

There’s an official passage there connecting the "New World" and the Farm World.

"Just as I thought." A slight smile played on Sean’s lips. "I told you that guy wouldn’t behave."

Honest people don’t become politicians, after all.

Elvire frowned. "If you knew he wouldn’t behave, why did you let him live?"

She could guess that Sean had a plan of his own, but she couldn’t figure out what it was.

What if Pulente really did manage to bring a Grand Mage back with him?

Even though they wouldn’t necessarily be afraid with the Eleanor Sisters around, the true extent of the sisters’ power would be exposed.

"Don’t worry, he won’t succeed," Sean said meaningfully.

When one is out and about, accidents can happen at any time.

The journey from the "New World" to the Farm World is a long one, from the Inland to the frontier. Who’s to say he won’t just die on the way?

"Eleanor, Elise."

"Here."

"Have you both read the ’Fallen Nether Technique’ I gave you?"

"Yes."

"Good. Depart immediately. Find Her Highness the Saintess and tell her someone is trying to eliminate the only channel of communication she has with Mr. Blake."

"Yes, Master."
