He didn't know the Pope was in seclusion, but even if he had, he would have said the same thing.
This was because Her Highness the Saintess had instructed that no matter what he wished to report, he must state that he was requesting an audience with the Pope.
"Lord Pulente, please follow me."
As was customary, the Divine Servant led Pulente to the outer hall to wait.
Diana arrived shortly after.
She carried herself just as she had when meeting Robes, Clan Leader of the Florist Family—poised, beautiful, her delicate face an unreadable mask. She was aloof and detached, exuding an air of untouchable nobility.
"Speak. What is it?"
Pulente immediately grew excited. "Her Highness the Saintess, I have found your enemy!"
"Oh?" Diana sat on the main seat. "I have many enemies. Which one are you referring to?"
Pulente said, "Carl Black!"
Diana: "..."
'Why him again?'
Pulente, thinking she didn't believe him, hurriedly explained, "He didn't admit it himself, but he was able to reverse my Ring of Truth. His understanding of the Truth Technique is unfathomable, and his methods are remarkably similar to the Carl Black of old. Therefore, this subordinate believes it is highly likely that this man is Carl Black himself."
He added, "This matter is of grave importance. It is better to capture the wrong man than to let him escape. If it turns out to be a case of mistaken identity, I am willing to personally apologize, make amends, and bear all consequences. I implore you, Holy Daughter, to issue the order swiftly. We must not give him another chance to stage a comeback!"
Diana lifted her gaze to Pulente and asked, "You seem to hate him a great deal?"
"I don't just hate him," Pulente said. "I wish he were dead!"
Diana was taken aback.
Pulente continued, filled with righteous indignation, "This man bullied the First Saintess and sullied the reputation of the Church Court in the past. Now he has seized the twin daughters of the Florist Family, forcing them to serve him as maids! A Demon like that should be sent back to his own Hell!"
Diana was speechless.
She could tell that Pulente was a good man.
Or rather, he was an upright person. When it came to right and wrong, he had his own internal compass.
This was one of the reasons she felt confident in making Pulente the Governor of Siracle State.
Pulente knew of the Witch Hunt Operation and was loyal to the Church Court, but he would not stoop to abetting evil.
His loyalty, however, was to a version of the Church Court that didn't exist. He didn't know that she, the Saintess, was not actually acting in the Church Court's interests. He simply assumed her will was the Pope's will.
Diana had a habit of holding things back from her subordinates.
She didn't believe in the principle of "trust those you use, and don't use those you mistrust."
Therefore, even with subordinates she was extremely close to, like Catherine and Lilith, Diana never revealed everything. It was a way of protecting them, as well as herself.
The same was true for Pulente.
Compared to Catherine and Lilith, Pulente was still in a "probationary period" and knew even less.
To this day, Pulente still believed that everything recorded in the history books she had promoted was true.
For instance, the part about Carl Black assaulting the First Saintess.
"So, you're this furious because of what happened to Olivia?" Diana asked.
Pulente replied, "It's not only for the First Saintess but for you as well, Your Highness. You are the successor to the title of Saintess. The reputations and experiences of the Saintesses of every generation will, to some degree, affect your own public image. That is why we must kill Blake this time—to avenge the First Saintess and to eliminate this lingering threat to your reign."
Diana fell silent for a moment before saying, "And what if I were to tell you that I am the First Saintess?"
Pulente froze for a second. "Ah?"
Then, shock washed over him.
'What?'
'Her Highness the Saintess and the First Saintess... are the same person?'
'Does that mean every Saintess in the Church Court's history has just been the First Saintess, reborn to reclaim her throne??'
'My God!'
'This is an earth-shattering secret!'
With a THUD, Pulente dropped to his knees.
He didn't know why Her Highness the Saintess was telling him these things. He only knew that he had learned something forbidden. He cried out, "This subordinate is terrified!"
Diana gave a faint smile. "There's no need to be."
'Because the truly terrifying part is yet to come.'
"Did you know? The history you have seen is all false. I wrote it myself, deliberately, to be the very opposite of the truth."
Pulente: "?"
'The very opposite?'
'What does she mean?'
Diana continued, "You've always believed that Carl Black sexually assaulted the First Saintess, Olivia—that is, me—correct?"
Pulente: "??"
'Wasn't that what happened?'
"No."
A nostalgic look entered Diana's eyes. The corner of her mouth curled up as she said, "Actually, the real history is..."
"I sexually assaulted him."
Pulente: "?????????"
HUH???
