The One King

Chapter 23: Return to the Foyd Estate

Once the battle was over, the surviving soldiers gathered the remains of their fallen comrades and held a simple funeral for them.

After the burial rites were completed, they returned to the luxurious carriage.

Ever since Azrael had arrived at the scene, he had sensed someone's presence inside the carriage. However, he had not bothered to investigate the person's identity. As far as he was concerned, there had been no reason to do so.

Now, however, it seemed that the person inside was finally about to come out.

The carriage door opened, and a beautiful young girl stepped out.

She appeared to be around sixteen years old.

She was dressed in luxurious clothing, and from her movements and the way she carried herself, it was easy to tell that she belonged to a noble family. Nevertheless, her face was pale, and her body trembled slightly, perhaps because of the battle that had taken place only moments earlier.

The girl walked toward Azrael and Gaya.

When she was about ten meters away from them, she stopped and looked at the two of them.

Her eyes first fell upon Gaya, and she was immediately stunned by her extraordinary beauty.

Then her gaze shifted toward Azrael.

She studied his handsome features for several moments.

For some inexplicable reason, a strange sense of familiarity welled up within her.

She could not understand where that feeling came from.

However, she quickly composed herself, lowered her head slightly, and said,

"Thank you, my lords, for helping us in our predicament."

She then raised her head and regained some of her noble bearing before continuing:

"I am Selena Foyd, the youngest daughter of Duke Valer Foyd. I invite the two of you to Moonfall City as a reward for saving us."

Azrael and Gaya exchanged glances.

Azrael then gave Gaya a slight nod.

Gaya understood immediately and turned toward Selena.

"Since the young lady has invited us, we shall not refuse."

A small smile appeared on Selena's face.

She then invited Azrael and Gaya into her carriage.

The two accepted and climbed inside with Selena.

The carriage soon set off toward Moonfall City.

On the Way

During the journey, Gaya began chatting with Selena while subtly attempting to gather information about the ongoing war between the Faran Duchy and the Foyd Duchy.

She asked her questions in a casual manner, and Selena answered with whatever information she knew.

In this way, Gaya managed to obtain several useful details about the current situation.

Azrael, meanwhile, remained calm throughout the journey, quietly listening to their conversation without saying much.

Several hours later, they arrived at Moonfall City.

At the city gates, the guards did not stop them. They immediately recognized Selena and allowed the carriage to pass without delay.

The carriage continued through the city before eventually heading toward the Foyd estate.

After a short while, they arrived at the estate.

They entered through the main gate, and when they reached the inner entrance, they found several servants waiting there.

Among them stood a beautiful woman with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slender figure.

She stood by the entrance as though she had been waiting anxiously for Selena's return.

The moment she saw Selena, her expression changed.

As for Selena, the courage she had displayed during the battle suddenly crumbled.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she ran toward the blonde woman, crying.

The woman was not her mother.

She was Selena's personal maid, a woman who had served her faithfully for many years and had become one of the people closest to her.

Selena threw herself into the maid's arms, her body trembling as she finally released the fear and tension she had been suppressing throughout the battle.

The maid immediately wrapped her arms around her, relief and concern appearing simultaneously on her face.

She had been anxiously waiting for her young mistress to return safely.

At that moment, Azrael realized something.

The person Selena had been trying to appear strong and courageous in front of throughout the journey had not been her soldiers...

It had been herself.

Now that she had finally returned to a safe place, she allowed herself to show the fear she had been hiding all along.
