The One King

Chapter 55: A Dragon in Human Skin

Gaya was deeply shocked by the tremendous change in Azrael’s appearance. She continued staring at the enormous black-and-purple dragon before her for several moments, as if her mind still refused to accept that this terrifying creature was the same man she had been traveling with all this time.

Azrael noticed her gaze, so he sat down and lowered his head so that he would not have to raise his voice too much. He then spent several minutes explaining what had happened.

Of course, he altered the source of the bloodline in his explanation.

He did not mention the System.

Instead, he told her that his first incarnation had obtained this bloodline long ago and had left it for him when the time came.

It was a plausible explanation for Gaya, especially since she knew nothing about the System of the Eternal Council.

Yet the more she listened to the details of what had happened, the more astonished she became.

“Wait... So your current body isn't merely an ordinary transformation?”

“No.”

“And your new bloodline is stronger than your previous human bloodline?”

“By far.”

Gaya stared at him in silence.

Then she stepped closer and began carefully examining his draconic body, from his claws to his horns and enormous wings.

After a moment, an extremely important question seemed to occur to her.

She raised her head and asked:

“Azrael... can you transform back into a human form?”

Azrael looked at her in surprise.

She quickly continued:

“Don't tell me you're going to remain in this enormous body all the time! Your draconic form is certainly majestic, but it's far too conspicuous. How are you supposed to enter human kingdoms like this?”

She paused.

Then added more seriously:

“You'll attract attention wherever you go.”

But that wasn't the real reason behind her question.

Deep inside, other thoughts had already begun forming in her mind.

How am I supposed to stand beside him like this?

Then another thought crossed her mind, making her face turn slightly red.

And how... are we supposed to live together?

She did not need to think much further before realizing an even bigger problem.

What about our children in the future?

Embarrassed by her own thoughts, Gaya quickly shook her head, trying to drive them away.

Azrael, however, had never considered the matter before.

He raised an eyebrow and asked the System mentally:

“System, can I return to my human form?”

The System immediately responded:

“The Ancestral Calamity Dragon Bloodline possesses numerous innate abilities.”

“Among them is the host's ability to transform into a complete human form, as well as the ability to freely alter the size of his draconic body.”

The System paused for a moment before continuing:

“The host also possesses the ability to grant draconic forms to other beings, provided that the appropriate conditions are met.”

“However, not every creature is capable of transforming into this race.”

Azrael calmly absorbed the information.

“Understood.”

He then looked at Gaya.

“Apparently, it's easier than I expected.”

“What?”

“I'll return to my human form.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

Azrael began transforming.

A brilliant purple light appeared around his body.

His enormous form gradually began shrinking as his skeletal structure changed. His wings and tail contracted, and his entire body was reshaped into a humanoid form.

The scene was both strange and majestic.

After several moments...

The brilliant purple light faded.

Azrael appeared once again.

He stood nearly two meters tall, his body far more powerful and perfectly proportioned than his previous human form.

His skin was pale, while his features had become even more handsome and sharply defined. His hair remained as black as night.

But his eyes were no longer human.

His pupils were a deep purple, vertically slit like those of a dragon, giving his gaze an unmistakable draconic majesty.

His fingernails had lengthened slightly and turned black and sharp.

Behind his back appeared a pair of black dragon wings streaked with faint purple lines.

A long tail covered in black-and-purple scales emerged behind him.

Finally, two long black horns grew from either side of his head, curving slightly backward.

Rather than diminishing his appearance, they only made him look more handsome and imposing.

Azrael opened his eyes and examined his new body.

“This form is much more convenient.”

But he received no response.

He turned toward Gaya.

She was standing completely motionless.

Her eyes were wide.

She stared at him from head to toe, as though trying to comprehend the transformation that had just taken place before her.

Azrael had returned to a human form, but he was no longer the same man she had known.

He was more imposing.

More mysterious.

Even his features had become almost unnaturally perfect.

Azrael spoke:

“Gaya?”

She didn't answer.

“Are you alright?”

Gaya suddenly snapped back to reality.

“I-I'm fine!”

She quickly turned her face away.

But she had already noticed other details she had not been prepared for.

Her face became even redder as she tried to hide her embarrassment.

“You should have warned me before transforming so suddenly.”

Azrael looked at her in confusion.

“Why?”

“Nothing!”

Then she quickly added:

“Just... put some clothes on.”

Azrael looked down at himself.

Then he realized that his clothes had not returned with his transformation.

Silence descended.

Azrael raised an eyebrow.

Gaya turned her back to him completely, her face growing even redder.

“I'll wait here.”

For perhaps the first time in a long while, a genuinely confused expression appeared on Azrael's face.

“Strange.”

He then used his energy to form a simple black robe around his body.

After a few moments, he said:

“I'm done.”

Gaya slowly turned around.

When she saw him properly dressed, she breathed a sigh of relief.

Yet she couldn't stop herself from looking at his horns, wings, and tail.

Then she said quietly:

“I think we should leave quickly.”

“Why?”

Gaya looked toward the horizon.

“Because the appearance of a dragon like you in the Ten Thousand Beast Mountains won't remain a secret for long.”

Azrael gave a faint smile.

“That is exactly what I was thinking.”

He then raised his eyes toward the sky.

Far away...

some ancient powers had already begun sensing the change that had occurred within the mountains.

Neither of them knew that the news of the Birth of an Ancestral Calamity Dragon had already begun its journey toward the ears of beings who had not appeared for countless ages.
