Before, Gu Shengsheng had only suspected him of money laundering.

Now, there was no longer any doubt. He was definitely laundering money.

Now that she’d said her piece, Lu Chaoyang could do whatever he wanted as far as she was concerned.

After Gu Shengsheng left, Lin Kai asked, "President Lu, should we listen to Miss Gu?"

"We’re not."

Lu Chaoyang shot him a glare.

"Gu Shengsheng just can’t stand seeing us get the upper hand. She used me to get into the spotlight before and said I was completely humiliated. How can I possibly back down now?"

"She’s trying to talk me out of it because she doesn’t want me to compete with her, right? Doesn’t that just prove this pink diamond is the real deal?"

"..." Lin Kai was speechless. He had to admit, there was a certain logic to it.

But as Miss Gu’s number one fan, Lin Kai felt that if President Lu didn’t listen to her, things would definitely go wrong. He was bound to suffer for it.

Sure enough, after Lu Chaoyang and Jian Fan went back and forth for a while, Jian Fan finally stopped bidding, letting Lu Chaoyang have it for twenty million.

He really couldn’t understand it. ’Why is Lu Chaoyang fighting so hard for this? It’s just one of our "fakes," something we brought in specifically to launder money.’

Now that he’d won the bid, they obviously couldn’t just give him the lab-grown diamond.

They’d have to swap it for a natural one, or the auction’s reputation would be ruined.

The problem was, finding a natural pink diamond on such short notice would be difficult, and they might even take a loss on the twenty million.

So, since Jian Fan didn’t want to lose money and the organizers didn’t want any trouble, the end result was Jian Fan personally taking the pink diamond to Lu Chaoyang.

A waiter held out the pink diamond. Lu Chaoyang reached for it, but Jian Fan snatched it back.

"President Lu, a pleasure."

Lu Chaoyang eyed Jian Fan and said coolly, "What do you want?"

"President Lu, I truly adore this pink diamond. Is there no way you could let me have it?"

"No." Lu Chaoyang’s gaze was piercing. "I don’t just casually give away things I’ve set my sights on. Besides, we’re not familiar."

"..." Jian Fan was speechless. ’If I wasn’t afraid of this whole thing being exposed, I’d really let him take the loss and be done with it!’

So, Jian Fan could only say, "I have some other items from my collection that I’ve also donated, about ten of them. I’m not sure of their quality, myself, but they’re all of a similar caliber to this pink diamond. Why don’t you take a look?"

"You can pick something out, and in exchange, you can let me have the pink diamond."

’The pink diamond was being sold under the auction house’s name, backed by multiple expert appraisals. A major error like that couldn’t be allowed to happen.’

’But if it was one of his personal collection items, and a problem came up later, he could just claim ignorance, couldn’t he?’

Lu Chaoyang wasn’t interested at first, but then he saw several waiters bringing the items over.

He went over to look at them one by one.

To someone who didn’t know much about antiques, they all looked quite beautiful, but that was it. Gu Shengsheng also wandered over to see what the commotion was about and took a look at everything.

’Great. Not a single genuine piece. These were even bigger fakes than what you’d find at Pan Garden.’

’Is this Jian Fan just a conman?’

Gu Shengsheng mused, ’Lu Chaoyang is the CEO of the Lu Family, after all. He can’t be *that* stupid.’

But when Lu Chaoyang saw Gu Shengsheng inspecting the items one by one, he grew annoyed.

"Gu Shengsheng, do you want one?"

"..." ’Wait, since when am I getting blamed for this?’

She immediately clarified, "I’m not interested!"

But the more she denied it, the more Lu Chaoyang was convinced something was fishy. So he picked out two of the items and handed the pink diamond to Jian Fan.

"Take it," he said.

Jian Fan nodded. As he left with his prize, he glanced back at Lu Chaoyang and said with profound meaning, "Thank you."

’I have never seen anyone so stupid,’ Gu Shengsheng thought.

’But she’d tried to warn him and he wouldn’t listen, so there was nothing more for her to say.’

"You’ve made your bed. Good luck, young man."

With that, Gu Shengsheng turned and walked away with a flourish.

Lin Kai’s mouth twitched. "President Lu, aren’t you going to have an expert appraise these?! You just threw away ten million dollars!"

"The diamond, at least, had been appraised."

"It’s fine. When he came to make the trade, I could see how badly he wanted that pink diamond. I had a feeling something was wrong with it. What Gu Shengsheng said afterward actually made sense."

"Quick, go get an expert to come take a look at these two items."

The expert rushed over to take a look and tactfully explained that while the two items looked exquisite, they were both knockoffs from Putian.

He added that they were all mass-produced. The only reason they wouldn’t know is their lack of exposure to such things.

The expert looked puzzled. "Didn’t you just win the pink diamond at the auction, President Lu? Why would you trade it for these two items?"

Lin Kai wasn’t about to let the Young Madam take the blame.

He quickly interjected, "I took a photo of the pink diamond. Expert, can you tell if it’s real?"

The old expert studied the photo for a long time. "President Lu, this pink diamond... it’s most likely artificial."

"You’re not in the trade, so a layman wouldn’t be able to tell, but you can see it from the texture and the angle of the light’s reflection. Even the facets... I think there’s something wrong with them."

What was there for Lu Chaoyang not to understand now?

Gu Shengsheng had indeed warned him, but he had been too stupid, and he had truly thrown away ten million.

He’d been taking losses all day, and he couldn’t blame anyone else. Every loss was his own damn fault.

Lu Chaoyang hadn’t experienced such a failure in a long, long time. In all his years as President Lu, he had always been known for being decisive and effective.

He looked at the expert, nodded, and said, "I understand."

After seeing the expert out, Lin Kai returned and said to Lu Chaoyang, "It looks like the Young Madam doesn’t bear you any ill will! She was trying to help you, but you overthought things and ended up losing ten million."

"President Lu, you really brought this on yourself."

If Lin Kai weren’t so incredibly competent at managing things throughout the company, Lu Chaoyang would have fired him long ago.

The man’s words were like a knife twisting in his gut.

"Get the organizers. Bring these two items. Tonight, this charity foundation is going bankrupt."

Lin Kai lived for this kind of power play. He was thrilled!

"I’ll lead the charge, President Lu!"

He also shot a quick text to Gu Shengsheng: *President Lu is about to make a move on the foundation, Young Madam.*

Gu Shengsheng replied: *Perfect. A dog-eat-dog fight.*

...

It was very late by the time Gu Shengsheng got home.

She was just about to tiptoe back to her room to sleep when she saw Lu Linlin standing at her door in pajamas, hugging a Star Dailu doll.

Gu Shengsheng said, "...Are you supposed to be Sadako?"

"Sister-in-law, you’re back so late! I’ve been waiting for you."

"What were you waiting for me for?" Gu Shengsheng wrapped her arms around herself, afraid the girl would try to glomp onto her.

She was not the touchy-feely type.

"You made Big Money today. I wanted to ask you... how can I become self-reliant like you? I don’t want to be a freeloader with no job, like a total good-for-nothing."
