"You’re Akira-chan, right?" Zero said, crouching in front of the kid with a smile as he finished knocking out the boss of this shipping operation.
He couldn’t kill him because the contract specifically stated to have the man delivered back to the contractor.
The hitman could only imagine what they were going to do to the man, but he paid no mind to that; after all, he was only getting paid to ensure the safety of Akira.
"Hmm," the girl nodded before she asked, "Who are you?"
"I’m Zero; your papa sent me to find you," Zero responded before taking off his jacket and wrapping it around her, "may I?"
"Yes, please," Akira nodded, allowing the hitman to pick her up.
The hitman smiled before walking with her towards the door of the container, exiting it without looking back.
Akira looked at the other children passed out within the cages with a small frown on her face.
She understood that Zero was a mercenary her father had probably hired, so he had no reason to rescue the others... but,
"Um, Zero-san?" She called out, causing him to stop and look at her before she added, "May I request a favor?"
Zero looked at her, then towards the direction she was looking, before he chuckled and said, "Don’t worry, someone will come pick them up."
"Hmm?" She seemed a bit confused until they stepped past the bodies of all the guards and walked out of the warehouse.
"Zero," the voice of a woman pulled Akira’s attention, and she noticed a pink-haired woman approaching them.
She had metaphorical stars in her eyes as she looked at Zero... one of admiration, perhaps.
Akira could understand exactly what they were talking about since she was speaking English, but she noticed the woman giving her a warm smile before turning to where she had just come from and saying something.
It was then that she noticed the others standing there.
"They’ll make sure that the children are safe," Zero looked at her with a smile as he explained.
"Thank you," Akira said.
She was aware of the fact that he didn’t have to do this, and yet, he still did.
"Don’t worry about it," the hitman said, using his free hand to pat her head, "I don’t think I could sleep properly knowing I’d let kids around my siblings’ age get hurt."
He then walked over to one of the cars and helped her inside before getting in himself.
The moment Zero was in the driver’s seat, Akira turned to him and said, "Zero-san has siblings?"
"I do," the hitman said, "they’re quite the handful...well, one of them is."
"I see," she nodded and turned silent as the car drove away from the warehouse.
***
A few hours later, Zero could be seen with both hands in his pockets as he walked towards the private jet Rose had prepared.
He had already had both Akira and the leader of the shipping operation handed over to the people who had hired him.
The contract was complete.
"Welcome aboard," Rose greeted him with a smile the moment he stepped into the jet, the door closing behind him.
"Thanks."
Zero walked past her and dropped into one of the seats, letting out a tired sigh as he leaned his head against the backrest.
The jet immediately started moving, and the hitman was left to his thoughts.
Quite a lot had happened in the past year, but perhaps the second biggest event that happened was the ’Security’ company Rose had started.
Once a company created to allow him to easily move money was now a lot larger than that.
What had started as a simple front had gradually evolved into something resembling a mercenary agency, except that its awakened humans were bound by contracts that ensured their loyalty to Zero.
Rose had somehow managed to turn Zero’s ridiculous idea into a functioning business.
The company now handled everything from private security to transportation, protection contracts, and even specialized security consultations.
Of course, none of that was the real reason Zero considered it useful.
Its real use came in the form of information.
Rose had managed to gather quite a lot of awakened humans with a useful set of Factors that made information gathering extremely easy.
The company gave him access to information that would have otherwise taken considerably more effort to obtain.
And because they were bound by actual binding contracts, Zero didn’t have to worry about them selling his secrets to someone else.
The hitman couldn’t help but smile at the thought; he had never expected the organization to grow this quickly.
"..."
Zero felt a gaze on him, and he slightly lifted his head from his seat to notice Rose looking at him, so he asked, "What’s wrong?"
"C-can I—"
Right.... She was still addicted to his blood.
With a sigh, the hitman tapped the bottom of his seat and a cold compartment opened within, from which he withdrew a clear bag filled with red liquid.
He then tossed it to her, but she was visibly unsatisfied.
Though it was still his blood, it felt different drinking it directly from him rather than from some blood bag.
But she couldn’t complain either; after all, she understood that the act felt uncomfortable now that Zero had gotten himself a girlfriend.
Rose reluctantly caught the blood bag and stared at it for a few seconds.
"You’re really getting meaner," she muttered, "perhaps getting a girlfriend was a bad choice after all."
The hitman chuckled at that before he leaned back and responded, "Getting a girlfriend was the greatest choice I’ve ever made."
Especially given who said girlfriend was.
Rose simply let out a sigh. If she had known that this would happen, perhaps she would’ve lied that her Factor only activated when she drank directly from him.
The problem with that was the fact that she’d also have to directly drink blood from the people whose skills she needed just to keep up the lie.
In the end, she simply sat back down and left the hitman to his thoughts.
Zero, meanwhile, had a smile on his face as he watched her sit down before he turned towards the screen in front of him.
It seemed to be displaying quite an interesting piece of news, so he turned the volume up.
[Overdrive, although a newly debuted hero, has been making waves for the past few months,] the news presenter said, [as he already beat the rescue record of most other heroes despite only being a Gamma-ranked hero himself.]
A small smile appeared on Zero’s face as the screen showed the new hero, Overdrive, smiling towards the camera.
The face was quite a familiar one....after all,
It belonged to Liam.
