The Reincarnated Hitman

[One Year Ago]

"Let’s see what Mom and Dad found out," Liam said as he clicked on the folder titled:

Anomalies of the Fracture Event.

The fracture event was the same one that had forced the people to abandon the city that was now the base of the Argent Ring.

The HA claimed that it was a villain experiment gone wrong, but Liam knew better. Although the comic didn’t confirm it, the hitman had suspicions about what happened there.

Unfortunately, it didn’t seem like now would be the time he confirmed that suspicion, because the moment he tried opening the file, he realized that it was password protected.

He tried entering the same password he had previously used, Firefly, but all that did was cause another video to pop up.

The first thing Liam noticed was the smiling face of his father, standing in some sort of lab with their mother in the background, seemingly fixing something.

"It seems Victor handed you the USB after all," David started as he let out a sigh, "we really hoped he didn’t, but it seems he believed that you were ready."

Liam remained silent as he watched his father speak.

"But," David awkwardly scratched his cheek as he chuckled, "we do need one more confirmation that you’re truly ready to find out what we did."

"After all, we want to be certain that you can keep yourselves safe," he continued, "so we secured this folder with a password that only one other person knows."

"The person is someone we trust completely," David said, "someone inside the Hero Association who’s helped us more than they probably should have."

"We won’t say who," his mother finally spoke up, not turning from whatever she was working on, "because if this footage ever ends up in the wrong hands, we’d rather that person stay safe."

"Though, only one password will trigger this video....we still need to be careful," David added, "so, here’s the only thing we can tell you about them... the dark room."

Liam was confused at this, as he tried thinking of what that could mean, but nothing came up about a dark room.

Before he could think too much, though, David’s voice interrupted,

"Be smart about this, Firefly," he paused before giving a warm smile, "We love you, all three of you."

With that, the video automatically closed, returning him to the screen where a password was being requested.

Closing the laptop, Liam lay on his back and looked up at the ceiling. The only thing he knew about the person with the password was that they were within the HA.

He didn’t know who they were or even what they looked like, which meant finding them was going to be a lot harder.

Usually, Zero would be able to simply handle this, but, given that the person he was looking for was inside the Hero Association, killing his way through the organization wasn’t exactly an option.

Not only would that draw far too much attention, but it would also make him look like a complete idiot.

He couldn’t exactly walk into the HA headquarters and start asking people, "Hey, which one of you knows my parents’ secret password?" either.

Liam let out a sigh, there was one other option..... temporarily becoming a hero.

He stared at the ceiling for a few seconds, considering the idea, it wasn’t exactly something he’d ever imagined himself doing.

After all, Zero becoming a hero sounded quite ridiculous.

Fortunately, Zero wasn’t the one becoming a hero, Liam was...or more accurately, a clone of himself.

Doing that would achieve two things. It would finally convince Michael that Zero and Liam were not the same people, and also grant him access to the HA.

"I guess I’m doing it after all," Liam said as he sat back up.

Since his Factor wasn’t registered with the HA, he could choose what to reveal and what not to, so if he was going to create a clone that was mean to be a hero, then he needed it to have a Factor that wouldn’t stand out too much, nor would it be too week.

After all, HA privileges depends on the hero’s rank.

"Alright then," he clapped both hands together, "let’s do this."

[Present Day]

Zero watched himself being interviewed on the screen with a small smile on his face.

A week after that day, he had gotten his Pragma remeasured at the HA, revealed his Factor to be a self reinforcement/boost type and spent the last six months quickly amassing popularity.

Although this started as a way to gather information, he couldn’t deny that he was having fun being a hero.

It was a strange experience.

With the smile still on his face, the hitman closed his eyes to sleep, whilst he focused on the mind currently doing the interview.

"Despite only being part of the HA for only a year, you have quickly becoming one of the most liked heroes in Sterling City, would you like to say anything about that?" The interviewer said as she held the mic towards Overdrive.

Liam smiled at the interviewer before leaning slightly toward the microphone, "I honestly don’t know what to say."

The interviewer also smiled at his response,

"Surely you have something to say about becoming one of Sterling City’s most popular heroes in such a short amount of time."

Liam scratched the back of his head with a slightly embarrassed expression.

"I guess I’m just happy that people like what I do," He paused for a moment before continuing, "I became a hero because I wanted to help people. Knowing that the people of Sterling City actually appreciate that makes everything worth it."

That was a lie, but it seemed the people were eating it up.

After all, who doesn’t like a selfless hero?

The interviewer nodded before asking, "Your rescue record has also been quite impressive. Some people have even started calling you the fastest hero in the city."

Before Liam had the chance to respond, a voice came from behind him, "did someone say fast?"

"..."

Yeah, overdrive had somehow become friends with the speedster hero, Volt.... Or at least, Volt seemed to think that they were friends.

"I believe that title belongs to me," the newly arrived hero said with a grin as he wrapped a hand around Overdrive’s shoulders.

"I believe I still hold the higher rescue record, no?" Overdrive simply responded as he looked at the speedster hero.

"W-well that’s only because you were closer to the scenes."

"Yeah, right."

The interviewer chuckled due to their interaction. It was clear that the two were quite comfortable around each other.

Volt eventually released Liam and turned toward the camera.

"For the record, I’m still the fastest hero in Sterling City."
