"I’m home," Liam announced as he walked into his apartment.
"Welcome back, big brother," Eli called from the living room.
Liam smiled as he took off his shoes and stepped further inside.
He immediately noticed Eli sitting on the couch with a controller in his hands and his eyes glued to the television.
Without hesitation, he jumped over the couch, took a seat beside the kid and picked up the second controller.
Eli paused the game and restarted, this time setting it for two players, without a word exchanged between the two.
They silently chose their characters and started the kart racing game.
"So," Liam broke the silence with his eyes still on the screen, "how was school?"
"It’s fine," Eli responded, his eyes also glued to the tv, "a bunch of people wanted to be my friends when they found out that both my big brother and big sister were heroes."
"Is that so?" Liam smiled, taking the lead, "then that’s good, right?"
"Not really," Eli shook his head, "after all, they didn’t want to be my friends before."
"I see."
Silence returned between the two again as they continued playing. But after a while, Eli added, "I still have friends though."
"Yeah?" Liam asked, keeping his eyes on the screen as he drifted slightly off the track.
"Mhm," Eli finally overtook him, "Ha! Got you!"
"Hey!" Liam let out as he used a speed boost to try and catch up, but Eli just chuckled as he continued leading.
While the two were absorbed in the game, the apartment door opened again, and someone else walked in.
She had on a form-fitting bodysuit that was colored white, green and black. On her waist was a utility belt with white pouches, and on her chest was the emblem of a star with two wings beside it.
On her face was a transparent green visor which she took off after closing the door behind her and turning towards the two.
With a sigh, she took off her gloves and boots before approaching, stopping just behind Liam, who was close to overtaking Eli.
They were quite close to the finish line and if he overtook the kid right now, then he’d definitely win.
So she decided to help.
She suddenly dropped her gloves and boots before quickly moving her hand to his eyes, blocking his view of the screen and causing him to crash into one of the booby traps.
"I win!" Eli let out a sigh as he jumped off the couch, only to realize that someone was standing behind them.
"Welcome back, big sis," he said.
"Hmm," Lea finally let go of Liam’s face before turning around and walking to the kitchen. "I’m hungry."
Liam could only chuckle as he leaned back on the couch and looked up at the high ceiling.
"I brought back Mochi and Dorayaki," he said.
"Really?!" Eli immediately stood back up. "Where?"
"The kitchen," Liam didn’t get to finish his words before the kid suddenly dashed towards the kitchen, causing him to let out another chuckle.
A lot might’ve happened during the past year, but his relationship with his siblings remained the same.
No, it was more accurate to say that they’ve gotten even closer.
Liam shook his head before getting up from the couch and following the two into the kitchen.
By the time he arrived, Eli was already standing on his toes, trying to reach the bag of sweets sitting at the top of their fridge.
"Need some help?" Liam asked.
"Yes, please," Eli nodded, and his big brother simply passed the bag to him.
Liam then turned towards Lea, who was still digging inside the fridge for anything to eat, until she discovered the previous night’s leftovers.
"So," he spoke up, "how’s being a beta-ranked hero treating you?"
Lea put the food inside the microwave before turning to him and responding, "It’s exhausting."
"That bad?" Eli asked as she opened the bag and picked up a strawberry mochi.
"Mhm."
The microwave hummed as it warmed the leftovers, while Lea leaned against the counter and rubbed her shoulder.
"Most of the time, I’m either responding to emergencies or dealing with paparazzi," she explained before looking at Liam, "I wonder how you make it look so easy."
"Well," Liam also leaned back on the counter, "the paparazzi do not care about a Gamma-ranked hero, even if I’m a fast growing one."
"That’s not fair," Lea muttered as she also picked up a Mochi from the bag.
Liam just shrugged in response, "Drawbacks of being awesome."
"Your agent should be able to deal with them soon," he added, "so don’t worry too much."
If the agent didn’t, then Zero would....and he was certain that the paparazzi would prefer Halo’s agent deal with them.
***
The three stayed in the kitchen for a while before returning to the living room....well, at least Liam and Eli did.
Lea was too exhausted to hang out more, so she headed straight for her room.
Eli picked up the remote, about to switch back to their game from the boring movie channel, but he paused when the program suddenly changed.
[We interrupt your current program to bring you breaking news,] the expression of the news anchor was one of concern as he continued, [an unidentified villain has launched an attack in the downtown district of Sterling City.]
[The Hero Association has confirmed that multiple buildings have been damaged, and civilians are currently being evacuated from the area.]
Footage on screen showed several blocks of the city filled with smoke, and sirens could be heard in the background as people fled through the streets.
Liam walked towards the window and looked in the distance, noticing that dust was indeed rising into the air.
[The identity of the attacker remains unknown, but eyewitnesses claim the villain is capable of—]
BEEP!
A familiar sound came from Liam’s phone, so he pulled it out of his pocket and glanced at the screen.
[This could do wonders for your PR,] it was a text from his agent, [since you’re the closest to the situation, might as well handle it... right?]
His agent caring more about PR than people being in danger wasn’t exactly surprising, so he simply responded, [alright.]
It seems it was time for Overdrive to save the day... again.
