"When you requested us to meet, I didn’t expect the location to be a cemetery," Zero muttered as he looked around.
A couple of seconds later, he gasped dramatically and wrapped his arms around himself.
"Don’t tell me..." he said, narrowing his eyes suspiciously, "you’re planning to bury me here because you’ve finally grown tired of me?"
"..." Sable looked at the kid with a blank expression.
He truly couldn’t figure out how he could joke regardless of the situation.
Zero, very clearly, needed a doctor right now, but he insisted he was okay enough to meet the agent.
Instead of responding to his words, Sable simply said, "You look worse than I expected."
"Yeah," Zero awkwardly tried scratching the back of his head, only to wince as he felt a sting, "I didn’t expect him to suddenly go through a second awakening."
Sable didn’t seem surprised by this information, an indication that he already knew.
"So," the hitman looked around, "why are we meeting in a cemetery this late at night?"
Instead of an answer, the agent simply looked forward, and he followed his gaze.
In front of three graves stood a woman in a brown coat. She silently sat in front of the graves, but from the slight trembling of her shoulders, Zero could tell that she was crying.
The grey market agent had expected the hitman to feel at least a hint of regret after completing the contract, so he decided to show the boy what the job had truly bought.
Peace for Hailey.
Unknown to Sable, though, all Zero wanted right now was some sleep, but the hitman didn’t bother telling him that.
Instead, he continued silently looking at the grieving woman for a few minutes before she stood up and turned towards them.
Zero had a frown on his face as he looked at Hailey’s expression.
Although the woman seemed relieved of whatever burden she had been carrying, her eyes seemed empty.
Similar to one who had lost their purpose.
She slowly walked up to them, stopping directly in front of the two and looked at Zero.
"You’re younger than I thought," Hailey said, her blank eyes looking directly into his.
Without letting the hitman reply, she turned towards Sable and gave a bow, "Thank you."
"There’s no need for that," Sable said before gesturing towards Zero, "besides, he’s the one you should thank."
Hailey straightened up and looked back at the kid before giving a small smile and saying, "Thank you."
Though her smile was as hollow as her eyes, Zero could tell that her gratitude was sincere.
Normally, a hitman would never get the chance to interact with their client, so this was a novel experience for him, and he wasn’t quite sure how to respond.
"I-I was just doing my job," he chose to respond simply, and in an attempt to ease his awkwardness, he asked, "So, what do you intend to do now?"
The woman silently looked at him for a while, clearly uncertain about the answer.
"For the last five years, my only goal was to make sure the man who let my family die actually paid for it," she said, surprised by how honest she was. "I guess I didn’t really think past that."
The last part was a lie.
Hailey had intended to join her family after her revenge had been completed, but the kid’s question caught her off guard.
"I see," Zero muttered, his expression seeming unusually serious as he added, "an annoying old man once told me, grief doesn’t owe anyone a debt it can’t actually collect. "
"You can spend your whole life trying to pay one back to people who are already gone," he added, "and all you’ll manage is making sure they lost two people instead of one."
Hailey froze as the kid continued speaking.
"I still have no idea what he meant," he added with a chuckle, "but you looked like you needed to hear it."
Zero realized that the two around him had gone completely silent. He then looked directly at Hailey, and he noticed that her eyes seemed to water again.
The woman immediately bowed again as tears dropped from her eyes, towards the ground, "Thank you."
Zero stood there awkwardly, uncertain of what he should do.
He glanced at Sable for help, and the agent merely gave him a faint smile before turning to the woman.
"Would you like me to have someone drive you home, Mrs. Cole?"
The woman stood up straight, wiped the tears off her face, and then shook her head. "I’m sorry, but I’d like to spend a bit more time clearing my head."
"Alright," Sable said as he reached into his coat and retrieved a card, "call this number if you need a ride home."
Hailey accepted the card and thanked him again. She then turned towards Zero and said, "Thank you for the words."
With that, she turned around and slowly walked towards the exit of the cemetery, but her demeanor seemed a bit different.
Zero silently watched her receding before he turned back to Sable. "You think she’ll rethink her suicide?"
The agent was silent for a while before nodding, "Hmm, your wise words seemed to have been enough to change her mind."
"Well, that’s to be expected," the hitman responded with a smile, "after all, I was a great sage in one of my past lives."
"..."
Sable looked at him with a blank expression as he said, "I didn’t expect someone like you to believe in reincarnation."
"Yeah, neither did I," Zero answered with a shrug before adding, "Please tell me you brought your car."
"It’s parked outside," the grey market agent said.
"Sweet," the hitman said with a grin. "Can you drop me home? I don’t think I’ll stay conscious for much longer."
The sway in his step was more than enough sign that he was at his limits, and he’d soon pass out from blood loss.
Well...it didn’t take long for that to happen.
Sable caught him before he could hit the ground, letting out a quiet sigh as he carried the kid to the car.
Before taking him back to the apartment, he made sure his wounds were treated; after all, he wouldn’t want the kid’s siblings seeing him in such a state.
