Dr. Crew turned silent at Cube’s outburst; it seemed the kid still held that grudge, so he chose to say nothing else.

"I apologize, but you do understand that you mentioned quite the sensitive subject, don’t you?" The leader of the Splinters said.

He hated his past being mentioned, especially when it involved her.

"You still haven’t answered my question, Crew," he said again. "What exactly was the plan?"

Again, the scientist chose not to respond, so the leader of the Splinters let out a chuckle and walked towards the table full of incomplete tech.

He picked one up, brought it to eye level before adding, "Perhaps I should remind you of how easy it would be to take everything away from you."

The next second, the sound of footsteps echoed from outside the lab, causing Cube to turn towards the door.

"Would you look at that. It seems our dear maid is here."

The owner of the footsteps walked through the door, revealing that it was indeed the maid.

However, instead of one of Crew’s family members, she was dragging a bloodied man with white hair and a suit behind her.

Cube’s eyes immediately narrowed.

He looked at the unconscious man, then back at the maid.

"Explain?"

The maid glanced down at Zero before calmly replying, "It seems he somehow found the location of the base."

She paused for a moment before adding, "he was also involved in the escape."

"Is that so?" Cube muttered in a pleased tone before walking towards Zero and crouching down, "and here I was, thinking it’d take a while to get rid of you."

"It seems you were stupid enough to deliver yourself right into my hands," he added as he lifted Zero’s chin.

The hitman could barely keep his eyes open, but he still chuckled and responded, "I’ve got quite the track record for doing stupid things."

"Indeed," Cube nodded in response, "but the fact that you’ve caused me quite the headache remains."

"Yeah.... I’ve got a track record for that too."

The two remained silent for a while before the leader of the Splinters chuckled and let go of his chin before standing back up.

"Tell me, Zero," Cube spoke again, "why are you suddenly interested in Dr. Crew here? Did someone pay you to save him?"

"Which wouldn’t be the case, after all; I have all who care for him within this base," he continued, "the HA wouldn’t try to recover him either, since they had discarded him a long time ago."

The leader of the Splinters then turned towards Dr. Crew and asked, "Isn’t that right, Crew?"

"..." The scientist remained silent, but the answer was obvious enough from his expression.

He, like many others previously working at the HA, had been abandoned by the hero organization.

Why?

Crew couldn’t exactly recall, but it had been made abundantly clear that trying to find out would only put him and everyone he loved in danger.

The scientist turned towards the white-haired kid wrapped in the maid’s strings, realizing that this was probably the friend Liam told him about.

But if the friend had been captured, did that mean all they had done was for nothing?

Despite knowing that getting his hopes up was futile, he had still decided to trust the kid, but not only had their plan failed, it also seemed as if he had put the kids in danger.

"Let’s just say he has something I need," Zero, on the other hand, despite the situation he was in, sounded completely unbothered.

A tone that didn’t match how he currently looked in the least bit.

"Is that so?" Cube turned to Crew. "I wonder what that is."

Dr. Crew frowned, wondering what the white-haired kid was talking about. Still, he said, "Let the kid go."

"Sorry, Crew, but I really can’t do that," Cube said, shaking his head. "he has caused quite the trouble for both the Ring and us."

"Heh," Zero let out, "and here I thought the Splinters were a group of their own....turns out they were just puppets for the Ring."

That seemed to hurt Cube’s pride as he suddenly lifted his hand towards the restrained Zero, about to use his Factor on him.

But he paused and put his hand back down before letting out a sigh, "Not yet."

Cube then glanced at Dr. Crew before looking back at him, "You see, Zero, I’m actually quite curious about you."

"Can’t say the feeling is mutual," the hitman said, "as far as I know, you’re simply a puppet in the hands of whoever controls the Ring."

"To them, you’re simply a child currently throwing a tantrum," Zero continued, "no, perhaps even worse, you only want validation from Ouroborus."

"Isn’t that right, Cube?"

The hitman ended with a chuckle, mostly directed at the name that the leader of the Splinters had chosen.

A name that would strike not even the slightest bit of fear into the ones who heard it.

Crew watched the kid with a frown on his face. By all means, angering Cube was the last thing he should be doing right now if he cared for his life.

Did he perhaps suffer from brain damage after his fight with the maid?

Cube, on the other hand, remained silent for a few seconds, seemingly processing Zero’s words.

The hitman could tell that he had struck a nerve, but unlike before, the leader of the Splinters didn’t immediately lash out.

Instead, he let out a sigh and crouched to eye level with Zero, with his eyes seemingly glowing behind the skull mask.

"I don’t think you understand what’s going on here," Cube lifted his hand to the hitman’s face, "I could crush you like a grape without ever touching you."

"I’m guessing you have a reason for not doing so right away?" Zero said with a grin, despite the obvious threat in the Splinter’s tone.

"Precisely," Cube said, "in exchange for your life, I would like you to erase the Ring."

"..."

Zero looked at him for a while before responding, "You’re not doing it yourself because?"

"You see, like the HA, Ouroborus has its own set of rules," Cube started, "and unfortunately, one of those rules prevents me from going against the Ring."

"Besides, they still have something quite important to me," he added, "you, on the other hand, are already an obstacle in their path, so they would have no reason to suspect the Splinters."

"After the Ring is erased, Ouroborus will have no choice but to officially recognize the Splinters."

"I see," Zero nodded in understanding before raising a brow, "but if I’m not wrong, isn’t most of the Splinters already dead?"

"Ah, that might’ve been my fault though."

"..."

The leader of the Splinters turned silent, calmly stood up before looking down at him, and the next second,

"Cube."
