The Scowling Sidekick: A My Hero Academia Fanfiction
The Dual-Battle Front Operation Commences{Sekai’s POV}
Mr. Aizawa told us we're helping with a secret mission to fight a bunch of villains. He said we'd be fulfilling a support role for the pros. Mr. Aizawa and the principal both want Aya-chan and me together for this. They only want to split us up during training now, especially because of the incidents during our work studies. They don’t want Aya-chan to be handicapped by creeps and not be able to get away with her ultimate. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mom and Dad pressured them into this decision either.
No matter why they put us together, I am glad I can protect Aya-chan. I refuse to let anything happen to her. They put us on Team Edgeshot. They put us specifically in the rear guard while Kaminari and a few other classmates helped on the front lines. Our quirks aren’t really suited for massive combat like what we're going to have today. We have a few combo moves combining our quirks, but other than that, we would be at a disadvantage.
To be honest, I am surprised they didn’t put us in the other group, where the rear guard was tasked with evacuating civilians near the hospital. I would have thought my quirk would have been perfect for that mission. Maybe Mr. Aizawa was taking into account that my quirk had been acting weird not too long ago. I guess it makes sense.They can’t really rely on a quirk that sometimes just stops working. The people they chose instead seemed to be a great fit for quickly evacuating, so it seems alright that I am not there.
While we are in position to support the heroes, Kirishima cracks his knuckles and stretches a little bit. “Doesn’t feel right being kept out of the action.” Yaomomo responds, “Honenuki and Komori from Class B were also taken to the front. Kaminari’s Electrification, Tokoyami’s Dark Shadow, Honenuki’s Softening, and Komori’s Mushroom; All of those quirks can be used to subdue large groups of enemies quickly from afar. We have no idea what this army is capable of. The pros are relying on our brave classmates to take out as many of our opponents as possible from the mission outset.”
Mineta looks down as he sits next to Jiro, Ashido, and Toru (who is standing), and says, “But what if they get their butts kicked?” Toru clenches her fists, has a determined look on her face, and says, “We have to have faith!” Ashido also says words of encouragement, “Yeah, they’re all great heroes. Even Kaminari.” I chime in, “Even though he has only one brain cell, he has a lot of destructive power.” Everyone laughs, and Aya-chan bops me and whispers, “Hey, you can’t say that out loud.” Kirishima chimes in Kaminari’s defense, “Hey now, that isn’t nice to say about our classmate.” I retorted, “Of course, dumb would come to the defense of dumber. You totally missed how I said he has a lot of destructive power, just like you.”
Everyone laughs at my comment, even Aya-chan, who gently bopped me on the head again, while Ashido cheers the now slightly depressed Kirishima up, “Cheer up, Kirishima. Smarts aren’t everything, and I like you just the way you are. You are strong and brave even when you are scared, which are great qualities in a hero.” Kirishima starts blushing at the compliment and looks flustered while avoiding Ashido’s eye contact.
Jiro’s attention is caught as if she heard something, and she quirkwalks up a tree and looks at the frontline group. I follow suit and use my zoom for a better view. They seem to be moving in, but the enemy doesn’t seem alerted yet. Our classmates see us up here, join us, and look quietly and anxiously since we have no idea what to expect. We know the League of Villains can use Haki, but we don’t know whether the whole Paranormal Liberation Front was taught it. They didn’t tell us anything beyond what we needed to know to fulfill our support role. Mr. Aizawa told us to be ready to be on the frontline since a lot of the pros weren’t able to master Haki during the time they had to learn it.
{Same time at the hospital/ Mirko’s perspective (Bunny hero, number 5 on the hero charts)}
I made it to the morgue where the Doctor’s secret lab is, and I went to smash that doctor’s face in. His crying, snot-nosed face of terror alerts me that this is the real one and not a clone, but I still want to smash his face in regardless. The doctor reaches for a device, and I know it is bad news. So I switch course from trying to mash his head to his hand, but my kick misses his hand and scrapes his arm, removing the sleeve of his lab coat. My kick missed because that tiny yellow nomu hit me with that Armament Haki from behind, which adjusted the trajectory of my kick. It hurt, but this guy is weak, so I kicked him and sent him flying backward into a machine. That little monster used Armament Haki again to protect himself.
The doctor says, emotionally moved, “It’s a miracle! You used your power without a direct order. You must have been trying to protect me. You are so sweet, my dear pet.” The doctor presses some buttons on the device in his hand, and he says loudly, “Precious High-Ends, it’s time. AWAKEN!” I hear glass crashing, and my face is met with an Armament palm strike of a High-end that sends me flying to the upper level. The impact of both the high-end Armament palm strike and the impact of hitting the empty capsules had me coughing up blood, even though I caught myself with my legs.
They all seem to be masters of this Haki stuff they tried to teach us. I barely learned how to quirk-walk in the time they gave us to prepare for this mission, and I don’t know if I will survive this. Some of their bodies weren’t complete, but after a moment, they were able to use a regeneration quirk to make their bodies whole in a terrifying manner instantly. These high-ends are talking, which I personally never heard before and only heard through Endeavor’s testimony from his fight in Kyushu. After the brief ringing in my ears subsides, I hear one of them say, “Can go wild. Destroy.” Another one says, “Kill all of them, and make them suffer.”
I hear Crust’s voice yell (the shield hero, number 6 on the hero charts), “Mirko!” One of the high-ends that has bars protecting its exposed brain yells, “The hero Crust! I don’t remember what number you are, but that doesn’t matter.” Crust yells while making a shield, “You are right! I am Crust!” The Nomu crashes into him and throws him back into the hall he arrived in and keeps him away from the fight. The doctor sits in his chair and apologizes to his creations, “I am sorry that you don’t have more time to adjust before combat, but as you see, this is an emergency. I am counting on you, High-Ends!”
After saying that, the tiny Nomu jumps on his lap, and his chair, which apparently was on a track, starts quickly moving away from this room. Like I will let that happen! Blood from a wound on my head is now blinding my left eye and is pouring so profusely that it is traveling all down my face and even into my mouth. I live for fights like this, even though I am hopelessly outmatched. The taste of my own blood invigorates me, and I say as I get up, “Now that I am warmed up, the fun can truly begin.”
I shit-talk the doctor while preparing to leap, “You’re back there, aren’t you? Oh, villain, I wonder what’s keeping you from running further. I can hear you clacking away in the back of the tunnel!” One of the high-ends asks his buddies, “How can she still move?” Another one says, “We must stop the hero. I will kill her.” As much as I want to fight to the death with those perfect soldiers that are these high-ends. I have to do my job as a hero and get to that old man.
I use my legs and jump towards the tunnel with my rabbit speed. I smack-talk those damn Nomu, “Suckers! The old dude is mine!” The high-ends don’t seem to want me to follow the old man, and they are coming at me hard. It takes everything to dodge them with my speed. I was almost to the hallway when one cut me off and went to kick me. I blocked his kick with my leg, and since the nomu used armament, it shattered my leg.
The impact threw me back, and I caught myself with my good leg. Damn. What is a rabbit without their legs? Fucking useless. How will I get past that damn armament haki? If only I knew their weak points. It looks like I won’t be living to see another day, but hell, at least I lived a good life until this point and was a pretty decent hero. I need to do my best to try and beat at least one of these monstrosities before I kick the bucket.
I have to lessen the load on the other heroes.
{Bakugo’s POV}
Goddamnit! I want to fight those damn Nomu! Not helping these weaklings escape! GRRRRR! As I yell at these weaklings to read their damned phones and escape, I sense the pros’ life forces at the hospital growing weaker. The nerd sees my reaction, and I think he felt it, too. The nerd tells Ida, “Sorry, Ida. We have to help the heroes, or they are going to die! Keep evacuating the civilians!” We both head to the hospital with great speed and pass by Endeavor as he struggles to fight regular Nomu who can use Haki.
I blast two with Haki-infused explosions, and the nerd gets the other two. Endeavor wipes the blood from his face and says, “Go to the morgue. Crust says there are High-ends down there, and his transmission sounded more like a death-bed warning. Please try and save them. You kids are our only hope now.” We hurry down to the morgue where we see hero corpses scattered everywhere, and the high-ends have that bunny hero, Mirko, restrained by her broken and bloodied limbs. She says weakly, “Kids, be careful. They know hak-”
Before she could finish, they ripped her body apart in front of us as we were hurrying to her side. We didn’t make it in time. I yell at these damn Nomu as I use my observation haki to find their weak points using precise AP shots, “DIE, DIE, DIE, DIE, DIE!!!” The nerd and I quickly dispatch these high-ends as a team, and I feel my hair stand on end as if my haki is warning me about something. I hurry in the direction where I feel it coming from and see that Shigaraki is in a tank of sorts, and I feel a dormant yet barely detectable formidable force emitting from him that I never sensed before.
I quickly blast my way to him, and I see an old man looking terrified to see me, and he screams while yelling to the tiny nomu, “John-chan, hurry and take me and Shigaraki to safety!” Like hell! I know that tiny one is capable of teleporting like that extra, and if he gets away with Shigaraki, then hell will rain down on the whole world. Not just Japan. I use another Haki-infused AP shot and kill that tiny Nomu, who was using armament for defense while attempting to teleport. The doctor starts crying like a snot-nosed brat, and I have had enough.
I release my haki in a way that I have never used it, and I tell him, “Sit down and tell me what the fuck you are doing to Shigaraki.” The doctor falls to his knees from my haki pressure and trembles in terror. He shivers, and before I can get a response, he falls unconscious from my haki. What I did was enough to shatter the capsule that Shigaraki was in, and he fell unconscious out of it onto the floor. I yell at the doctor’s unconscious body, “DAMNIT! YOU FUCKING WEAKLING! TELL ME WHAT YOU WERE DOING TO HIM!” The nerd comes in, white as a ghost from seeing the scene from outside, and places his hand on my shoulder. “Kaa-chan, he isn’t conscious. Your wave of haki knocked him out.” I respond to the nerd with attitude, “No shit. That is why I was yelling, you dip-shit.”
He looks at Shigaraki and the destroyed tank, feels the same dormant danger I felt, and tells the heroes over the radio so the ones still alive, like Endeavor and Eraserhead, can handle it. I want to blast that asshole to smithereens, but I am terrified that he would wake up and release that danger on the world. The threat level I feel from him is more than just a danger to Japan.
The heroes who are still alive have come to the scene to take their fallen comrades' mangled corpses out with respect, while others carefully take the unconscious Shigaraki into custody. Endeavor looks filled with regret, as does Eraserhead. Endeavor tells us, “Our pride and wanting to protect you from danger made us lose very great heroes today. Thank you for saving us.” Eraserhead lifts his yellow slotted goggles to show his very red and irritated eyes, and he says, “Without you kids here, things would have gone a lot differently. Even though I have just as good haki control as you, I am not a front-line fighter and don’t have many powerful attacks that would get past their regenerative abilities. It just prevented me from taking on damage.”
Endeavor pats Eraserhead on the shoulder. “Without you by my side, I would have died today, Eraser. You have my thanks.” Eraserhead talks back a little, “Don’t go sounding all mushy, Endeavor. It is bad for your brand.” I would let out a ‘PFT’, but even I have some respect for the lives we lost today. I still see Mirko’s last moments vividly. That was my first time seeing someone so brutally murdered in front of my eyes. I can totally see why Kubo had issues after her work study.
{Sekai’s POV just a little earlier}
The pros were met with a quick, surprise attack from the villains who could use Haki. The front line of pros who didn’t know Haki were taken out before our classmates could do anything and died brutally. The pros and our classmates were all pale as ghosts from witnessing the initial attack. The pros seemed to be telling our classmates to use their quirks to help the pros in a panicked fashion. An electrical-quirk villain is part of the small force and tries to take out all the pros with an electrical attack. Kaminari absorbs it and uses an armament-infused thunderbolt to take out the electrical villain.
Something isn’t right. The villains in the Paranormal Liberation Front know Haki, yet I only see a small force coming to greet the heroes, but the most problematic is that crazy motherfucker, Twice. Aya-chan sees my face as we spectate from the back, and she asks, “What’s wrong, Kai-chan?” I tell her my thoughts, and she agrees, “Yeah, it does seem strange when you consider they all seem to know haki. They should have anticipated our arrival when they sensed our presence.” She turns to Jiro and asks her, “Hey Jiro, can you help me monitor the surroundings? I want to make sure that the pros don’t get flanked or anything.”
Jiro nods, puts her earphone jacks to the ground, and infuses them with her observation haki. I look back to the fight, and Gang Orca, Miss Midnight, and the Shiketsu High faculty who are with our team took the front line and started protecting the other heroes who had to pull back since they weren’t able to get proficient in haki. It is them against this whole force of villains. Just when we think they are doing a good job at whittling their numbers down, Twice makes more doubles to overwhelm our heroes. Their Observation Haki’s future sight is working overtime. According to Aya-chan’s Observation Haki, Twice is using Armament to conceal his real body from pros who can use Observation Haki.
Jiro, with a farther range of her Observation Haki because of her quirk, gets alerted before Aya-chan and says, “Bad news, guys, villains are popping up from the southeast, north, and the west, and they seem to be coming this way very quickly.” Aya-chan radios the heroes, and I can hear the worry in Edgeshot’s voice: “Kids, I would like to keep you out of combat if at all possible to keep you safe, but I know that you kids are more proficient in haki than we are. I want you to split up into 3 groups and head off the villains coming to flank us. I’ll dispatch heroes to accompany you.”
I hold Aya-chan’s hand tight to let her know that I refuse to separate from her during this. The pros are splitting up the students who were on the front lines with us. Kaminari is going to the north with Kirishima, Aoyama, Toru, Ashido, Kendo, Sero, the creepy chick, the dude with the twin impact, and that chick who can control the size of shit. Mushroom chick, mask dude, the chick who can split up her body, Yaomomo, Shoji, Sato, and the grey spiky dude who can turn his body into steel are going to the southeast. Tokoyami is going west with me, Aya-chan, the shadow dude, and the welding dude. Amajiki, the vine chick, and the beast dude are going to stay and help the pros fighting the small force here and help them fend off Twice’s armament doubles.
The pros will act as our support since most of them don’t have Haki control, so they'll restrain villains who get incapacitated so they won’t be problems when they wake back up. This feels weird to have pros as support. I wrap around the students on our team and several pros. I take as many as I can and start to teleport us to the villain force to the west.
