The bell-shaped mirror opened into a tunnel of sound.
Austin Veyron stepped through first and the world rang.
Not one bell. Hundreds. Each one hung from the black ceiling on silver chains, swinging without wind. Their tones pressed against his ribs and tried to become words.
’OBEY. RETURN. BELONG.’
The expedition filtered behind him in a tight line. Elena tucked the transfer list tighter to her chest. Veyra watched the bells. Rin moved ahead along the tunnel wall, ready to test each shadow before it could surprise them.
Nahlia stopped beneath the first bell.
"Do not touch them," she said. "Every bell carries a claim echo. If it rings your name, the route will try to make the claim real."
A bell swung toward Austin Veyron.
His claim seed burned.
The bell’s surface showed a map of the tunnel ahead, along with a warning.
[SEED CONSULTATION WILL ALERT SOVEREIGN OBSERVATION.]
Austin Veyron looked at the team.
"We can use the seed to identify the safe path," he said. "But Vharra will know we are here."
Rin frowned. "She already knows we broke her market."
"She may know the market failed," Veyra said. "She does not know which bell we will use."
Tessa looked at the tunnel. "We choose together. That was the rule."
One by one, they agreed.
Austin Veyron uncovered the seed.
The tunnel unfolded in his vision. Red paths led to bells that would call forced memories, old debts, hidden fears. A narrow white line ran beneath the floor, through a sequence of silent bells toward the vault.
Then the seed sent its signal.
Somewhere far away, Vharra noticed.
The first bell rang.
A mirror of Grand Meridian appeared beside Elena. She saw the hotel burning, Maelis trapped behind a root wall, and herself standing outside while people screamed her name.
Elena’s breath caught.
"It is not real," Austin Veyron said.
"I know," she replied, but her voice shook.
The echo reached for her wrist, trying to write **ABANDONED CUSTODIAN** into the air.
Elena tore the letters apart with the transfer list. "Grand Meridian is not abandoned. They chose to hold."
The bell shattered.
The second bell dropped toward Veyra.
It showed her back in the heart engine, chains burning through her armor while Austin Veyron stood over the core with power in his hands.
"Take it," the echo whispered to him. "Save her correctly this time."
Austin Veyron felt the old temptation rise.
Veyra looked at him through the vision. "Do not let a memory make decisions for me."
"I will not."
She cut her own chain echo with the silver edge of her blade. The bell cracked.
The tunnel fought them harder.
Paper bells began falling from the ceiling, each stamped with a name from the transfer list. The adult scouts grabbed the pages before they could ring. Rin cut the chains holding them. Seven’s white light turned the paper bells brittle enough for Tessa to break apart.
They reached the white path beneath the floor.
Austin Veyron used Root-Graft to raise it into a narrow bridge. The group ran across as black sound surged beneath them.
At the far end stood the Bell Vault.
It was a circular chamber with one enormous bell hanging at its center. The auctioneer stood on a platform beneath it, black book open in one hand and silver hammer in the other.
Around her, mirrors showed Grand Meridian’s residents asleep, unaware that their names had been carried here.
The auctioneer smiled as the expedition arrived.
"You are late," she said.
She raised the hammer.
A name glowed on the open page.
’MARCUS OF GRAND MERIDIAN.’
The bell began to descend.
Marcus’ image flickered in the nearest mirror. At Grand Meridian, he slept in a cot near the engine room, unaware of the black line forming above his chest.
Elena moved first. "Seven, relay to home. Tell Maelis to wake him and keep him away from the root heart."
"Signal attempting," Seven said. The tunnel bells swallowed half his transmission.
Veyra crossed the platform in a blur. The auctioneer met her with a chain whip, snapping it across the floor. Veyra blocked the first strike and slid under the second, but the third wrapped around her ankle and pulled her toward the vault bell.
Rin cut the chain before it could tighten.
Austin Veyron reached for the hammer.
The auctioneer laughed. "Touch it and you become the ringer."
The seed offered a map of the bell’s inner claim pattern. It showed a single point where the name entered the sound. It also showed Vharra’s attention watching through the seed.
Austin Veyron looked at the team.
"Tessa, can you rewrite the receiving consent?"
"If I have the page."
"Nahlia?"
"Give me three seconds with the book."
Kaela and Orena were not there, but the adult scouts took their place, charging the auctioneer’s mirror guards as they emerged from the walls. Sarielle held the platform edge with silver fire. Elena reached the bell controls and began turning the chain wheel backward.
Austin Veyron went for the book.
A mirror hound leapt between them. Its jaws closed around his forearm. The hunger screamed at the core in its collar. He broke the collar’s command line instead, then threw the freed hound clear of the platform.
The auctioneer struck him with the hammer handle. Pain burst across his ribs.
"You keep refusing power," she said. "One day, that will kill someone you love."
Austin Veyron caught the handle on the next swing. "Maybe. But not today."
He twisted it aside. Veyra drove the auctioneer backward. Nahlia slid beneath the hammer and seized the black book.
The bell dropped another foot.
Marcus’ name began to ring through the vault.
Tessa pressed the book open on the floor. "The claim says he accepts transfer through silence."
Marcus could not hear them. He could not refuse from Grand Meridian.
Elena’s radio cracked alive.
Maelis answered through static. "Marcus is awake. He says he refuses."
Tessa wrote the words into the page.
’MARCUS OF GRAND MERIDIAN REFUSES TRANSFER.’
The bell stopped.
The vault shook hard enough to crack the mirrors.
The auctioneer’s face finally showed fear.
The name on the page burned away.
The auctioneer did not wait for the vault to settle. She kicked the broken hammer chain into Austin Veyron’s path, then dove through a mirror fracture behind the bell.
Rin lunged after her, but the fracture closed with a ringing sound that knocked everyone back.
The black book remained on the platform, open to the next page.
’TRANSFER LIST — CONTINUED.’
Elena turned it carefully. Several names had been crossed out after the market rebellion. Others were marked for later delivery. At the bottom, a new line was forming in fresh ink.
’INNER COURT BELL VAULT — FINAL CLAIM AUDIT.’
Nahlia looked at the chamber’s cracked walls. "She is calling the vault’s larger system. This was only a local bell."
Veyra wiped blood from her cheek. "Then we have minutes before more wardens arrive."
Austin Veyron watched Marcus’ mirror fade back to the quiet engine-room cot. The refusal had worked because Marcus had been awake to give it. Every name still on the book was someone who might not know a bell was coming.
"We take the book," he said. "We find the final audit before she uses it."
The bell above them split down the center.
Inside its cracked metal was a route key shaped like a listening ear.
The crownless path had opened another door.
