The route key burned in Austin Veyron’s palm.

It looked like a tiny listening ear chipped from black glass, but when he pressed it to the cracked wall of the Bell Vault, the stone pivoted inward. A thin door materialized where only darkness had been reflected before.

A voice echoed from within.

’STATE WHAT YOU WILL PROTECT. NAME NO ONE AS PROPERTY.’

The expedition exchanged glances.

Veyra stepped forward.

"I will protect the right of people to choose their battles," she said. "Including the right to walk away from mine."

The door cracked open a finger’s width.

Beside her, Elena stepped forward. "I will protect the people who call Grand Meridian home, not because they belong to us, but because home is something we build together."

The door cracked open further.

Rin crossed her arms. "I will protect anyone who asks for help while I am able to give it. I am not promising obedience. I am promising a choice."

The key glowed.

Tessa said, "I will protect names from being turned into prices."

Sarielle said, "I will protect the people I serve, and I will keep serving only while I choose it."

Nahlia’s pen shook in her hand. "I will protect every scribe who wants to stop writing cages."

Seven’s white eye illuminated brighter. "I will protect voluntary network paths and refuse coercive commands."

Austin Veyron was last.

The room held its breath.

He could feel the claim seed beneath his ribs offering up the answer the key wanted him to say. Lord. Devourer. Owner. Defender.

Instead he whispered, "I will protect the choices people make when they are free enough to make them."

The door swung open.

Beyond it was a bridge made from black glass suspended over a pit full of ringing bells. Names crawled across each bell tile in every direction. Below the bridge, Austin Veyron could see the auctioneer’s route home weaving back through the void toward a red-lit chamber in the distance.

They sprinted.

The first wardens met them halfway across the bridge.

Mirrored-masked demons twice Austin Veyron’s height blocked the entrance to the bridge. Court armor sprouted from their backs as they stabbed chain spears against the glass, shattering portions of the bridge so that its bells chimed even louder.

Rin and Sarielle held down the left side. Veyra and the Cinder Gate scouts secured the center. Austin Veyron planted Root- Graft beneath their feet to keep the glass stable as Elena and Tessa searched for the black book’s signal.

Someone stabbed through Austin Veyron’s shoulder.

Pain exploded white across his vision.

The claim seed offered him an option.

[SOVEREIGN RESPONSE: SEIZE WARDEN AUTHORITY.]

Instead Austin Veyron smashed the spear’s allegiance matrix. The warden tossed his weapon aside as the chain tether went dead. Veyra used the opportunity to disarm him without striking his core.

He ripped off his mask.

"Run," Veyra said.

He did.

Glass began to crumble behind them.

More bells fell into the void below as they imploded, swallowed by the names within. Austin Veyron heard Maelis scream. Marcus cried out. Names he didn’t recognize screamed from the bridge behind him. He wanted to hate every bell that fell.

At the end of the bridge, the final audit chamber appeared.

Glass doors slid closed, barricading the ringing pit outside. The inside was empty aside from levitating books scattered throughout every inch of the room. Each tome pulsed bright with the claim network of an entirely different territory. At the center of the room was the auctioneer standing before a black mirror. The transfer book laid open beneath her hammer.

She looked up as the team stumbled through the door.

"You passed the listening gate." she sneered. "How sentimental."

Elena reached for the open page first.

She gasped.

One name from Grand Meridian had been erased from the book. No longer eligible for transfer.

Instead she had been written into the ledger of the inner court.

’MAELIS OF GRAND MERIDIAN — PRESENTLY HELD.’

The auctioneer raised her hammer above her head.

"Welcome to the final audit," she called. "Your home is about to learn what it costs to refuse a queen."

She brought the hammer down.

Pages fluttered across every surface as every ledger book floating throughout the room powered on. Holographic claim networks bloomed from the opened tomes across the room, projecting names through the air in beams of red light. Some Austin Veyron recognized. Some he didn’t. But every name listed inside that room had a line under it waiting for completion.

Elena punched forward trying to reach Maelis’ ledger entry.

Mirrored armor solidified between her and the book.

"No alone time." Austin Veyron called out.

"I know," Elena replied distractedly, though she kept her eyes trained on Maelis’ name.

The auctioneer walked behind the black mirror. "The final audit does not need your permission. All it requires is a territory weak enough to be invaded."

The Mirror Market attack had weakened Grand Meridian’s defenses. The root- heart battle had mapped every claim connection. And now they knew the route into Maelis herself because the network had already been mining them the entire time.

Austin Veyron felt the claim seed begin to pulse in rhythm with the room.

[FINAL AUDIT DETECTED.]

[SEIZE LEDGER AUTHORITY?]

Accepting would let him lockdown every book in the audit chamber. He could claim the transfer book, every levitating ledger in the room, even the auctioneer herself. He could erase this threat from existence and leave.

He would become that audit’s target.

"No."

The room punished him for refusing.

Chain webs poured from every surface around them. Barricading the entire team by ensnaring them mid-bridge. Veyra and Rin found themselves pinned on one side with the scouts unable to move. Elena, Tessa, Nahlia, Seven, and Austin Veyron bunched together near the central ledger.

One mirrored warden attacked Tessa.

Austin Veyron caught its spear between his palms, severing the orders line with DEVOUR protocol. The warden fell away from the chain tether screaming, its eyes wide beneath the mask at the absence of the command unit once within its skull.

"Move." Austin Veyron commanded.

It fled.

Nahlia reached up to the suspended ledgers. "The audit isn’t like the auction. It needs someone planted inside the target territory."

"Elena?" Austin Veyron questioned.

Elena shook her head. "Maelis is the witness. We need her to refuse while she’s being held."

The black mirror lit up.

Maelis was inside it.

She was pinned up against the wall of an inner-court chamber so dark only her hands were visible as ember fire. Chains draped down from ceiling to wrist. But she was unharmed. Awake.

"Austin Veyron," she whispered.

"You need to let go of the ledger." The auctioneer called from behind the glass.

Maelis smirked. "I don’t need clearance to request."

Her hands glowed.

Above them appeared at the bottom of her chains. Her name above the ledger shifted from

’PRESENTLY HELD** to **WITNESS ACTIVE.’

Nahlia nodded. "She has to actively refuse the audit itself. But we need to give her the words to say it."

The room erupted into chaos as the auctioneer called mirror wardens to rally behind her. Veyra’s sword cried against the glass barricade on the opposite side of the room. Rin yelled something about keeping scouts alive. Seven was shouting off to one of their flanks.

Austin Veyron held down the central ledger so Elena could finish deciphering its contents.

"Name Grand Meridian as the target territory," Elena ordered. "Then say it is not transferable, or a route, or key, or collateral. Say it does not belong."

Austin Veyron looked over to see her repeat the words back into the mirror.

Each word burned away another chain-link that bound her wrists to wall.

The auctioneer charged them, hammer swinging wildly.

Austin Veyron met her fist with his own and they fell together off of the central dais. She cracked his ribs; he caught her wrist before she could land properly on top of him. She punched through his guard and he smashed into the railing instead. Her hammer clattered across the floorboards.

Names started blinking out of existence.

Tessa wrote a line under Maelis’ name with Nahlia’s pen.

’A TERRITORY CANNOT CONSENT FOR THE PEOPLE WITHIN IT.’

Complete silence fell over the room.

Then every single ledger book suspended from the ceiling began to shatter.

Maelis’ chains dissolved inside the black mirror.

The auctioneer screamed and launched herself through the glass mirror. It did not seal itself behind her. Instead, it projected Maelis standing alone at the center of an inner-court chamber dozens of meters away with dozens of court guards milling around her confused at whose side they were meant to be on.

"Get the list home." she called. "I will escape on my own."

The final audit chamber imploded inward.

Veyra punched through the barrier lead with nothing more than her hands.

Beside her Rin dragged Nahlia to safety as glass continued to fall from above them. Seven detonated with light, washing the room white before revealing a temporary escape towards the listening-ear door at the opposite end of the room.

Austin Veyron clutched the transfer book tight along with the other master-page fragments in his coat.

They scrambled away through the collapsing route as the chamber imploded around them.

One ledger book remained intact.

It cracked open on its own accord.

A single line of text materialized beneath the rubble.

’CANDIDATE AUDIT — Austin Veyron. QUEEN’S ATTENDANCE REQUIRED.’

The route without a crown led Vharra back to her door.
