The Shadow King's Alpha : The Cursed Bond

Chapter 10: Another Word for Possession

[Empire Qashmar — Afternoon]

The imperial palace gates stood wide open, and before them...stood Grand Duke Lior Vaelric.

His sword was already in his hand, its steel catching the dying light, while behind him stood the knights of House Vaelric in full battle formation. Their armor was stained with dust from the road, their expressions grim, their hands tight on their weapons.

Across from them, inside the palace courtyard, waited the Imperial Knights.

Far more in number.

A wall of silver armor and raised spears blocked the path to the palace steps, and standing behind that wall, draped in royal black and gold, Emperor Tharzek looked down at them with a slow, mocking smile.

"Looks like the empire’s most loyal house has finally decided to bare its fangs at the throne. Grand Duke... do you not fear the name of treason?"

Lior’s eyes burned with fury.

"You forget yourself, Emperor. Above your throne stand the spirits. Above your crown stand the deities." His fingers tightened around the hilt of his sword. "And by their judgment..."

He took one step forward.

"...I was ordered to bring them your head."

The smile vanished from Tharzek’s face. "To reach me, you will first have to carve your way through the greatest warriors in this empire."

Lior raised his sword, its edge pointing straight at the throne. "Then pray they die quickly because if I must rip your head from your shoulders with my own hands to bring back my son..."

His voice dropped into something colder than rage.

"...then that is exactly what I will do."

Tharzek’s expression twisted. "Kill them."

The order had barely left his mouth when Lior roared—

"ATTACK!"

And the palace exploded into blood; steel crashed against steel.

The Vaelric knights surged forward like a storm, slamming into the Imperial line with such force the first rank staggered back instantly. Spears shattered. Shields splintered. A knight screamed as a Vaelric blade tore through his throat, and then the courtyard drowned in chaos.

Grand Duke Lior was at the front; he cut through the first imperial knight before the man could even lift his shield...one slash across the neck, another through the chest, and the body hit the marble in a spray of blood. A second came from the left.

Lior ducked under the blade...and drove his sword straight through the man’s stomach. He ripped it free just in time to turn and block another strike.

CLANG—!!!

The force of it jolted up his arm; three Imperial knights rushed him at once. Lior’s eyes narrowed.

The first swung for his neck. Lior sidestepped and sliced open the man’s throat; the second drove a spear toward his ribs...too fast. The blade punched through the side of his armor and tore into flesh.

Lior grunted, blood spilling hot beneath his robes...and then he grabbed the spear shaft with his bare hand, yanked the knight forward, and rammed his sword through the man’s face.

The third Imperial knight lunged.

Lior turned and took the strike across his shoulder...a deep slash, sharp enough to stagger him half a step...but before the man could pull back, Lior’s blade flashed once.

And the knight’s head rolled across the marble, and blood ran warm down Lior’s side, down his arm, and down the hilt of his sword, but he did not stop.

Could not stop, not while Kael was still in that monster’s hands.

Valeric knights fought like men who had already chosen death before stepping through the gates.

Blood sprayed across the white palace pillars, across the marble floor, across the golden crest of the empire itself until the courtyard no longer looked royal...it looked slaughtered.

Grand Duke Lior cut down another man; his breathing had turned heavier now, blood loss slowing the strength in his arm, but every time an Imperial knight stepped in front of him, they died before they could take a second breath.

A sword slashed across his back, another carved into his thigh. An Imperial knight managed to drive a dagger into the side of his abdomen. Lior grabbed the man by the throat and snapped it with one hand before kicking the corpse away.

His vision blurred for half a second, then he looked up and saw the palace steps. Tharzek is still standing there.

Watching, waiting, and smirking. Something dark broke in Lior’s chest; with a roar, he surged forward again.

Lior tore through them like a beast; one lost an arm, one lost half his face, and one was run clean through and pinned to the palace pillar behind him.

By the time the last scream finally died...the courtyard had gone quiet.

Bodies lay everywhere. Imperial knights. Vaelric knights, blood pooled between the marble cracks and ran down the palace stairs like red rain.

Lior stood in the middle of it all, breathing hard, his armor split open in several places, blood soaking his side, shoulder, and thigh. Around him, the surviving knights of House Vaelric lowered their swords one by one.

Every Imperial knight was dead.

Lior slowly lifted his head, his gaze locked onto Emperor Tharzek, and this time...there was no court. There was only a father, drenched in blood, coming to collect the life of the man who had thrown his son into darkness.

Lior took one step toward the palace stairs, then another; his sword dripped crimson onto the marble.

"Now, there is no one left between us."

And in that moment...even the emperor’s smile began to crack. Tharzek stumbled back a step for the first time since House Vaelric had entered the palace; real fear flashed across his face.

"You—"

But he never finished because the emperor turned and ran. Lior’s expression darkened.

Tharzek shoved open the palace doors and fled inside, robes dragging over the blood-slick marble as he rushed through the grand hall like a hunted animal. His breathing had already turned ragged, panic destroying whatever dignity remained of him.

Lior followed, his boots striking the floor in heavy, merciless steps, blood trailing behind him from every wound, his sword still clenched in one hand.

Tharzek glanced back once...and that was his mistake.

Lior lunged forward, grabbed the back of his robes, and SLAMMED him hard against one of the stone pillars.

The emperor cried out, the breath knocked from his lungs as Lior seized him by the throat and drove him to his knees.

"You created chaos across the empire," Lior snarled, his voice shaking with fury. "You slaughtered innocent Ashkarath children. You drowned Qashmar in blood. And because of your greed—"

His grip tightened.

"—my son was forced to offer himself to a monster."

Tharzek clawed at Lior’s wrist, choking. "L-Lior—listen—"

"No, you do not deserve to speak."

He yanked the emperor’s head back by the hair, forcing him to look up. "You do not deserve your throne; you do not deserve this empire."

Tharzek’s face had gone pale with terror. "Please—"

Lior’s sword rose.

"And you certainly," he said, staring into the eyes of the man who had destroyed countless lives with a single act of cruelty, "do not deserve to be called Emperor."

Then—

SHHHHKKKK—!!!

The blade flashed, and then Tharzek’s head separated cleanly from his body; blood sprayed across the pillar. Across Lior’s armor. Across the polished palace floor.

The emperor’s body collapsed first; his severed head rolled across the marble and struck the foot of the throne steps with a dull, wet sound before falling still.

Silence. It was heavy and absolute.

Lior stood over the corpse, chest rising and falling hard, blood running from his wounds and dripping from the tip of his sword, and he looked down at the dead emperor and said in a voice as cold as the grave...

"This is the price of forcing my son to a monster."

[The Dark Chamber — Nhar’Zhul Veyth — Shadow Manor — Night]

Kael sat at the edge of the bed in the dark chamber, fingers laced so tightly together they had gone pale, his legs would not stop shaking, and he hated the weakness in his body.

Hated the hunger clawing at his stomach, the dryness in his throat, the heaviness pressing against his bones after an entire day locked in this cursed room without food or water.

Most of all...he hated that he was waiting for the lock to turn and waiting for the monster who had dragged him here to decide what part of his life to break next.

Then—

CREAK.

The chamber door opened, and a line of pale light cut through the darkness. Kael’s head snapped up and there he was.

Lytharion.

The Shadow King stood in the doorway, tall and unmoving, moonlight and corridor light spilling across the hard lines of his face and broad shoulders. His black robes fell like liquid shadow around him, and those cursed golden eyes settled on Kael at once.

Kael rose to his feet because some instinct in him refused to remain seated in front of a predator.

Lytharion stepped inside; the door shut behind him with a soft click, and the chamber felt smaller immediately.

His gaze swept over Kael once...taking in the pale face, the rigid shoulders, the exhaustion carved into his posture...and then a faint smirk touched his mouth.

"Has the bravest warrior I met in Sah’Rumeh finally died?"

Kael said nothing.

Lytharion walked closer, slow and unhurried as he mumbled.

"It must be difficult to starve for an entire day without food... without water... locked in a chamber while your body slowly remembers that it belongs to someone else’s mercy."

He stopped directly in front of Kael, far too close.

"But what can I do? Your emperor’s sins were so vast that you insisted on suffering in his place." His gaze dropped over Kael’s face, lingering on the tight line of his mouth, the stubborn lift of his chin. "This is barely the first grain of sand in the punishment he earned."

Kael’s throat worked once; his body was exhausted, but his pride still stood upright, teeth bared. "Then why not kill me? If revenge is all you want, get it over with. My death should satisfy you."

Lytharion went still and then smirked.

"Should it?

He stepped closer. Kael had nowhere to go; the back of his knees struck the bed, but he refused to retreat further.

Lytharion lowered his head slightly until they were nearly eye level, his golden gaze locked on Kael’s amber one with suffocating intensity.

"No. Your death would satisfy nothing."

His hand lifted. Kael’s body tensed instantly, but before he could move away, Lytharion’s fingers brushed against his cheek, a light touch.

Kael’s breath caught...not from softness, but from the sheer wrongness of it. The Shadow King’s fingertips slid slowly over his cheekbone, down the line of his jaw, as though acquainting himself with the face of something he intended to break.

Lytharion’s voice dropped lower.

"I told you already, little wolf..."

His fingers moved to Kael’s throat and rested there, right over the pulse beating too fast beneath the skin.

"Your death will not be easy."

Kael stared at him, breathing shallowly, every muscle in his body locked tight.

Lytharion’s thumb dragged over the sharp line of his throat, over the hollow beneath his jaw, then lower...until it brushed against the rise of his Adam’s apple.

Kael flinched. Lytharion’s smile deepened. "I will make certain that you die a little every day before I ever grant you the mercy of dying once."

Then—

GRAB.

His hand snapped shut around Kael’s throat. Kael choked.

Lytharion’s grip was iron; he dragged Kael off the floor with one hand as though his weight meant nothing, forcing him upward until his toes barely brushed the ground.

Kael clawed at his wrist instinctively, coughing, his lungs already burning, but Lytharion did not even blink.

Golden eyes met amber ones, cold, pitiless, and terrifyingly calm.

"And it begins tomorrow."

Kael’s vision blurred at the edges. Lytharion watched him struggle for another heartbeat...then released him.

Kael’s throat burned; his chest ached. One hand flew to his neck while the other braced against the wall to stop himself from collapsing entirely.

Above him, Lytharion stood like a god pronouncing judgment.

"Prepare yourself.

Kael coughed again, lifting his head just enough to glare at him through watering eyes.

Lytharion looked down at him, and there was something terrible in the stillness of his face now. Not rage, not shouting, but something colder.

"Tomorrow, the monster who dragged you into darkness will claim you beneath the lunar moon."

Kael’s blood ran cold. Lytharion took one slow step closer.

"You will stand before the altar. You will kneel where I tell you to kneel and when the moon rises high enough..." His gaze dropped to Kael’s throat, lingering there in a way that made Kael’s skin crawl, "...I will mark you in front of every spirit still watching this cursed land."

Kael’s fingers tightened against the floor.

"I am..." He coughed, forcing himself upright despite the pain in his throat. "I am an Alpha. I can refuse."

Lytharion stared at him for one long moment and smirked.

"You still do not understand, do you?"

He moved closer to Kael now, a deliberate invasion of space; his fingers caught Kael’s chin and forced his face up.

"I am not asking for your consent, Red Wolf."

Kael’s jaw tightened beneath his grip.

Lytharion’s thumb pressed into the line of his jaw, not enough to bruise, but enough to remind him how easily it could.

"You speak of being an Alpha as though that title has any power left in this room." His voice was velvet wrapped around a blade. "As though the blood in your veins, the rank in your scent, or the pride in your spine can shield you from me."

He leaned closer, close enough that Kael could feel his breath against his face.

"I am the Shadow King."

The title was not spoken loudly. It didn’t need to be. It settled in the room like a law older than kingdoms.

"I can take an alpha, an omega, a priest, a warrior, a king...if I decide they are mine to claim, then the world learns to endure it."

Kael’s breathing had gone unsteady again.

Lytharion’s gaze searched his face, drinking in every trace of hatred, fear, and resistance as though he found something darkly pleasing in it.

"And you..." he murmured, his thumb dragging once over Kael’s lower lip before settling back at his jaw, "will learn faster than most."

Kael’s eyes widened slightly at the touch, more from fury than shock; he jerked his face away at once.

"Don’t touch me."

The chamber went still. Lytharion’s eyes narrowed and smiled again. This time there was no amusement in it.

Only cruelty.

"You offered yourself to me. You walked into my judgment and placed your life in my hands to save those villagers." His voice lowered, turning colder with every word. "So do not stand in my chamber and speak to me of what I am allowed to touch."

Kael’s breath caught.

"From tomorrow onward," Lytharion said, his voice dropping into something dark enough to stain the air itself, "you will stop thinking of yourself as a guest, a prisoner, or a warrior of Qashmar."

His fingers tightened in Kael’s clothes.

"You will learn what it means to belong to the darkness that took you."

Kael glared at him, throat aching, pride bleeding but not broken. Lytharion held his gaze for one more long, suffocating moment.

"Do not make tomorrow harder than it already will be," Lytharion said, turning toward the door. His hand touched the handle, and then he paused. Without looking back, he added in a voice cold enough to hollow the room—

"And do not mistake the title of bride for kindness, Red Wolf."

His golden eyes slid toward Kael over his shoulder.

"In my hands, it is merely another word for possession."

Then he opened the door and stepped out into the darkness beyond, leaving Kael alone in the chamber...alone with the bruises around his throat, alone with the taste of fear and rage still burning on his tongue, and alone with the unbearable truth settling into his bones...that tomorrow, beneath the lunar moon...

The Shadow King truly intended to make him his.
