[The Shadow Manor — Later — Hallway]

The massive obsidian doors closed behind them with a deep, thunderous rumble. Silence settled over the hallway.

Lytharion walked ahead without a single word; his footsteps echoed through the endless corridor, slow and measured, yet tonight there was something different.

He was quieter.

Kael followed several steps behind, one hand unconsciously resting over the strange crest above his heart. Every few moments, his fingers brushed against the mark, as though reassuring himself it was truly there.

It was warm, still alive, and waiting. At the end of the corridor Zevran stood waiting. The silver wolf immediately lowered himself into a respectful bow.

"My Sovereign."

No answer came. Lytharion walked past him without so much as a glance. Zevran slowly lifted his head; for the first time in centuries...he found himself unable to read his sovereign’s expression.

There was no fury, no satisfaction, and no triumph after completing the Lunar Covenant. Only...silence.

"...My Sovereign?" he called cautiously. "Did something occur within the Heart Tree?"

Lytharion’s footsteps stopped, and his golden eyes shifted sideways, toward Kael and, more precisely...toward the strange mark hidden beneath the black ceremonial robes.

His gaze lingered there for only a heartbeat. Then...he looked away, and his voice returned to its usual cold authority.

"Follow me."

Kael frowned; he had expected mockery, another threat, perhaps even another cruel remark. Instead...the Shadow King had become unnervingly silent.

Kael mumbled to himself, "What’s wrong with him?"

Something inside the Heart Tree had shaken even the Deity of Darkness. Zevran slowly looked toward Kael; his eyes unconsciously drifted to the place above the young Alpha’s heart.

"What happened inside?" he whispered almost to himself.

Neither Kael...nor Zevran...received an answer because the only man who possessed it...continued walking in complete silence, and somehow...that silence was far more unsettling than his anger.

[Later — The Heart of Nhar’Zhul Veyth]

The ancient forest stretched endlessly beneath the red lunar moon; not a single beast stirred, only the sound of three pairs of footsteps echoed through the darkness.

Lytharion walked at the front. Kael followed several paces behind. Zevran remained further back, maintaining the respectful distance expected of the Shadow Sovereign’s first attendant.

The oppressive silence lingered until Lytharion suddenly stopped, his golden eyes lifted toward the unseen boundary standing before them.

Without a word he stepped forward.

FOOOOOSSHHH—!!

The veil surrounding Nhar’Zhul Veyth rippled like black water; the ancient barrier parted, and moonlight poured through. Lytharion crossed first. Kael followed. Then Zevran.

The moment they stepped beyond the hidden realm, someone was already waiting; a lone crimson wolf stood beneath the blood-red moon, his fur matted with dried blood. Fresh wounds still covered his body.

Clenched firmly between his jaws hung a blood-soaked cloth sack, even from a distance...the metallic scent of fresh blood lingered heavily in the air.

Kael’s amber eyes widened.

"Father."

The words escaped him before he realized it; he instinctively stepped forward but—GRAB.

Lytharion’s hand closed firmly around his wrist. The grip wasn’t painful; it was absolute, a silent command to stay.

Kael looked toward him. Lytharion never even glanced his way; his eyes remained fixed upon the crimson wolf standing ahead.

Slowly...Grand Duke Lior released the bloodstained sack from his jaws, silver light wrapped around his enormous wolf form.

Moments later...he stood in human form; his armor was torn, blood stained nearly every inch of it, and his face carried countless cuts.

Yet...his back remained perfectly straight. In one hand...he held the blood-soaked bundle; his amber eyes briefly found Kael. For the first time since the battle at Sah’Rumeh...the crushing weight inside his chest eased.

His son was alive, and he allowed himself only that single moment of relief.

Then...his gaze returned to Lytharion, and now they stood facing one another beneath the Red Lunar Moon as Grand Duke Lior spoke; his voice remained steady.

"I have fulfilled my promise." He slowly raised the bloodstained bundle. "The man responsible for the slaughter of your children...no longer draws breath."

The cloth loosened slightly. Dark crimson dripped onto the forest floor. Lior stopped only a few steps away.

Then...he knelt on one knee, not in submission but in acknowledgment of the covenant he himself had demanded, and he placed the bundle before Lytharion.

"This is the head of Emperor Tharzek."

Silence.

The forest itself seemed to hold its breath. Lytharion looked down at the blood-soaked cloth; his expression did not change—no satisfaction, no smile, and no triumph. Only those ancient golden eyes...quietly staring at the offering laid before him.

Then...his deep voice broke the silence.

"So...you chose your son...over your emperor."

The wind stirred. Dark mist gathered around the Shadow King’s feet; his presence spread through the forest like the approach of an endless night. Every tree seemed to bow beneath its weight. Even the air itself grew heavier.

"You have delivered the first payment, but tell me, Grand Duke..." Those burning golden eyes settled upon Lior again. "Do you truly believe...that one man’s death is enough to repay the blood of an entire generation?"

Silence fell once more.

The weight of those words pressed upon the forest itself. Grand Duke Lior slowly straightened his back as his amber eyes never left the shadow king.

"If more blood is required...then I shall offer more. If lives are demanded, I shall surrender them, but...Return my son."

Silence.

Lytharion regarded him without expression, and then, after what felt like an eternity, he spoke. "So...you choose to be a father before you choose to be the Grand Duke of Qashmar."

Lior did not deny it.

"I became a father long before this empire placed a title upon my shoulders. The throne gave me authority; my son gave me purpose. If the entire world must burn to keep him alive..."

His voice did not tremble.

"...then I would watch it burn."

Kael froze; his breathing stopped. Those words...they did not sound like the father he had known his entire life. His father had taught him discipline, honor, duty, and sacrifice.

Since childhood, Kael had heard the same lessons over and over.

’A Vaelric does not retreat. A Vaelric protects the empire. A Valeric dies before abandoning his duty.’

Never, not once...had his father ever spoken like this.

Lior never looked away from Lytharion.

"You want your son returned?

Lior answered without hesitation. "I want my son returned. If my life is the price...then take it."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"Father!"

He instinctively stepped forward, but—GRAB. Lytharion’s hand closed around his wrist, firm and unyielding.

Kael stopped immediately. Lytharion didn’t even look at him; his ancient golden eyes remained upon Lior. The forest fell deathly still; even Zevran held his breath.

Then...Lytharion spoke.

"Very well."

Everyone froze.

Lior’s eyes narrowed. Kael stared in disbelief. Even Zevran looked toward his Sovereign as though he had misheard. Lytharion finally turned toward Kael, his gaze slowly lowered...to the newly formed mark resting above Kael’s heart.

He looked at it for a long...unreadable moment. Then his eyes lifted once more; they had become cold and empty.

"Take him."

Silence.

Kael blinked. "What?"

Lytharion’s voice remained indifferent. "I have no further use for him. He is utterly useless to me."

Without another warning, Lytharion shoved Kael forward. Kael stumbled several steps before catching himself; before he could understand what had happened, Lior was already beside him, strong hands grabbing his shoulders.

"Kael."

For the first time in days...the Grand Duke allowed himself to breathe. He quickly examined his son from head to toe. Searching for wounds. Searching for injuries. Searching for proof that he truly stood before him.

Kael looked equally confused; his mind refused to understand. This...wasn’t right. The Shadow King had slaughtered most of the wolves. Declared him his sacrifice. Dragged him into Nhar’Zhul Veyth.

Forced the Lunar Covenant upon him, promised to make every day of his life a living hell. So... Why? Why release him now?

Lytharion slowly turned away; he never looked back. "Zevran."

The silver wolf immediately lowered his head. "My Sovereign."

Lytharion’s voice echoed coldly through the forest. "Take the emperor’s head and throw it to the wild wolves."

And just like that, Lytharion simply walked toward the invisible boundary of Nhar’Zhul Veyth; dark mist gathered around him, and without slowing his pace...he stepped through.

FOOOOOSSHHH—!!

The barrier rippled, and his figure disappeared into the ancient realm; only silence remained. Zevran looked once toward Kael, then toward the blood-soaked bundle and then back toward the place where his Sovereign had vanished.

"...My Sovereign..." Something...was terribly wrong; he immediately picked up the cloth bundle and hurried after him.

"My Sovereign! Sire... wait!"

FOOOOOSSHHH—!!

Zevran disappeared beyond the barrier. The forest became quiet once more; only Kael and Grand Duke Lior remained standing beneath the crimson moon. Neither spoke for several long moments.

Finally...Lior broke the silence.

"That was strange. I came here prepared to die. I was certain he would never release you." His brows slowly furrowed. "And yet...he surrendered far too easily."

Kael unconsciously placed a hand over the strange mark upon his chest. It still radiated a faint warmth; his thoughts drifted back to the ritual. Back to the moment Lytharion had stared at the mark in utter disbelief.

Back to the silence that had followed the ritual.

"No." Kael’s voice was barely a whisper. "It wasn’t easy."

Grand Duke Lior turned toward him, his brows knitting together. "What do you mean?"

Kael lowered his eyes. "I...don’t know."

His fingers unconsciously tightened over the strange crest above his heart. It was still warm. Still pulsing...as though something inside it refused to become still, his thoughts drifted back to the altar, back to Lytharion’s face.

The disbelief, the silence, and the moment the Shadow King had looked at him...not with hatred, but with confusion.

Why...? Why do I feel...like I’ve been abandoned?

The thought startled even him. Abandoned? By the very monster he had spent days wishing to escape?

It made no sense, none at all. Kael slowly lifted his head toward the hidden entrance of Nhar’Zhul Veyth.

The barrier had already sealed itself; nothing remained except darkness. Lior followed his son’s gaze before speaking quietly.

"Come. Let’s leave...before the Shadow King changes his mind."

Kael remained still for one more heartbeat, then...he nodded silently. Together...they turned away from Nhar’Zhul Veyth, neither of them noticed...that the mark above Kael’s heart gave one faint pulse before becoming quiet once more.

[Inside Nhar’Zhul Veyth — Moments Later]

"My Sovereign!" Zevran hurried through the ancient forest, struggling to keep pace with the Shadow King. "...My Sovereign... please!"

Lytharion never slowed; his long black robes swept across the ground as he walked deeper into Nhar’Zhul Veyth, the darkness parting before him with every step; his face remained unreadable.

"Sire," Zevran finally caught up. "Why? You declared him your mate before the spirits. You invoked the Lunar Covenant; you were prepared to make him bear the punishment of an empire."

His voice grew more confused.

"So...why did you surrender and release him?"

Lytharion stopped, the forest became still, and without turning around, he spoke. "He received the mark...above his heart."

Zevran froze, his silver eyes widened, and his breathing stopped as his lips parted in disbelief.

"Above...his heart?"

The realization struck him like lightning. "No...that means, he is—"

For the first time since the Shadow King had awakened...true panic appeared on Zevran’s face. He took an instinctive step forward.

"My Sovereign!"

Lytharion remained silent. Zevran’s voice shook. "The Heart Mark is not an ordinary mate’s crest."

"It binds life itself. If the mark forms over the heart...the covenant no longer binds merely two wolves. It binds their lives."

Lytharion slowly closed his eyes, as though he already knew. Zevran stared at his Sovereign in disbelief.

"My Sovereign..." His voice had become almost desperate. "You cannot allow him to leave. If too much distance separates the two of you...the Bond will begin rejecting its bearer."

Silence.

The leaves above them rustled softly beneath the crimson moon. Zevran’s next words were barely above a whisper.

"If you remain apart...the queen will die."

The ancient forest fell into complete silence. Lytharion opened his eyes; those golden eyes...which had never feared gods, spirits, or kings...grew darker than the endless night itself, and for the first time...even the Deity of Darkness found himself standing before a fate he had never foreseen.

"Then let it. He chose to bear the sins of his emperor." The darkness around Lytharion slowly stirred. "My children were slaughtered; my bloodline was buried before it had the chance to live. If that wolf must awaken every morning with pain tearing through his heart..."

His voice lowered into something terrifyingly quiet.

"...then he shall awaken with it. If every breath reminds him of the price of the Covenant...then let every breath become his punishment."

Zevran clenched his fists.

"But, My Sovereign... if you remain separated—"

"I know."

Lytharion’s answer came immediately, sharp enough to silence the forest itself. "I know exactly what the Heart Bond demands."

His gaze drifted toward the distant barrier where Kael had disappeared, then...he spoke without emotion.

"That...is the punishment he shall receive. He chose to bear the burden of another’s sins. So let him bear them." His voice echoed beneath the crimson moon. "Every day, every night, and every heartbeat."

A cold wind swept through Nhar’Zhul Veyth. Lytharion’s long black hair swayed behind him as he turned away from the forest’s edge.

"He is destined for that suffering and abandoning him...is the rightful judgment for a sinner."

He continued walking, never looking back, behind him... Zevran remained rooted where he stood, his silver eyes slowly lowered.

"My Sovereign...are you truly punishing him...or are you trying to convince yourself that this is justice?"

No answer came.

Only the ancient trees watched in silence beneath the blood-red moon and somewhere beyond the borders of Nhar’Zhul Veyth...the mark above Kael Vaelric’s heart gave another slow...painful...pulse.
