The Shadow King's Alpha : The Cursed Bond
Chapter 12: The Covenant’s Choice[The Lunar Chamber — Beneath the Red Lunar Moon — Continuation]
Silence.
A silence so ancient that even the wind dared not breathe.
The crimson moon hung directly above the colossal tree, its blood-red light pouring through the endless branches like rivers of scarlet. Every silver vein running beneath the bark pulsed slowly, each heartbeat echoing throughout the vast chamber.
The tree...was alive. Its enormous roots spread across the obsidian floor, twisting around the ancient altar before disappearing beneath the stone like the veins of the world itself.
Kael remained still, for reasons he could not explain...his body refused to move. The air had changed. It felt heavier than before, not with pressure but with presence.
Lytharion slowly stepped toward the altar.
His footsteps echoed across the chamber with measured certainty, every step awakening another ancient rune beneath his feet.
Fooooom...
One crimson symbol ignited, then another, then another; soon...the entire ritual circle glowed beneath the tree, ancient runes intertwining like rivers of blood and moonlight.
Kael unconsciously took a slow breath. "What...is this place?"
Lytharion did not turn around. "It is older than your empire. Older than every kingdom your history remembers. It is where Lord Valethorn stood beneath the first lunar moon."
Kael stared at the enormous tree. "This tree..."
Lytharion finally looked back. "It is not merely a tree. It is the Heart Tree of Nhar’Zhul Veyth, the first witness, the first judge and the only living being permitted to observe every Lunar Covenant since the beginning of any bloodline."
The Shadow King turned completely toward him; for the first time since entering the chamber...there was no mockery upon his face, no amusement, only the solemn authority of an ancient deity standing before witnesses older than kingdoms.
He slowly extended one hand. "Come forward."
Kael did not move; every instinct screamed at him to remain where he was, to run, to fight, and to do anything except step onto that altar.
Lytharion’s golden eyes narrowed.
"I do not possess the whole night, Red Wolf."
Silence.
Kael drew a slow breath; he looked once toward the crimson moon above the Heart Tree. Then...he slowly raised his hand. The moment his palm touched Lytharion’s an icy current rushed through his body.
Kael shuddered, the Shadow King closed his hand firmly around his, and...they stepped onto the ancient altar.
FOOOOOOOOM—!!
The ritual circle erupted with crimson light, every rune carved beneath their feet awakened at once, spreading like rivers of molten moonlight across the obsidian floor.
The colossal Heart Tree trembled. Its roots rose from the earth, circling the altar without touching either of them. The ghostly flames surrounding the chamber burned higher.
Outside...the entire forest answered.
HOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWLLLLLLLLLLLL—!!
Countless Ashkarath voices echoed beneath the Red Lunar Moon. Lytharion never released Kael’s hand. Instead...his other hand rose toward the crimson sky. Dark mist poured from his body, his robes dissolved into shadows, his towering human form stretched higher...larger...until—
BOOOOOOM!!
An enormous black wolf stood upon the altar; his fur was darker than the night itself. Golden eyes burned like twin suns beneath the crimson moon, ancient, terrifying, and divine.
Kael’s breath caught; without warning, moonlight wrapped around his own body, his bones shifted, and his muscles tightened, and within moments...the Red Wolf Alpha stood before the Shadow King.
Smaller and yet proud. His crimson fur gleamed beneath the moon, refusing to bow despite the overwhelming presence before him.
The two wolves faced one another; the chamber fell silent. Then...Lytharion’s deep voice echoed across the sacred ground.
"I..."
His words were carried by the wind itself.
"...Lytharion, Shadow Sovereign... Deity of Darkness... Guardian of the shadow...take Kael Vaelric of the Red Wolf Clan..."
The crimson moon brightened.
"...to stand beside me beneath the Eternal Moon..." His golden eyes never left Kael’s. "...as the one bound to my soul...my mate."
BOOOOOOOOOOM—!!
The entire chamber exploded with crimson light; the ancient runes blazed brighter than ever before. Every root of the Heart Tree surged upward.
The spirits had heard, the chamber waited, and the moon waited. Only Kael’s answer remained; his wolf trembled, not from fear, but from the unbearable pressure crushing down upon his soul.
He looked into Lytharion’s burning golden eyes. Then...beyond them, he saw Sah’Rumeh, his father, the innocent villagers, and the children who would have died had he refused.
Kael slowly closed his eyes.
"I...Kael Vaelric..." The red lunar moon answered with a low hum. "...of House Vaelric...accept Lytharion, the deity of darkness, as the mate bound to my life beneath this Covenant."
The instant the final words left his lips—
CRAAAAAAAAAAACK—!!
Agony, pure, unbearable agony. Kael threw back his head and howled.
AAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHHHHH—!!
It felt as though molten fire had been driven straight through his heart. Every vein beneath his skin ignited; silver and crimson light collided violently inside his body. His legs buckled; his wolf collapsed onto the altar, writhing as the ancient Covenant carved itself into his very soul.
The Heart Tree roared. Its roots burst from the earth, wrapping around the altar in spirals of crimson light.
Lytharion remained standing. For the first time in centuries...the Shadow King’s golden eyes widened.
"Impossible..."
The words escaped him before he realized it; the crimson light surrounding the altar slowly began to fade. The ancient runes dimmed one after another until only the Heart Tree continued glowing beneath the Red Lunar Moon.
Lytharion’s gaze never left Kael, and then his enormous black wolf form dissolved into countless streams of shadow. The darkness gathered and twisted, and within moments... Lytharion once again stood in his human form, dressed in his ancient black robes.
Across from him, Kael’s wolf form began to shimmer. Silver moonlight wrapped around his body before scattering into countless glowing fragments.
His crimson fur disappeared, bones shifted, and limbs lengthened. Until...Kael staggered back in his human form.
"...Gh..."
His breathing became ragged; without warning, his knees nearly gave way, and he grabbed the left side of his chest, right above his heart.
"Ah...!"
His heartbeat thundered violently against his ribs.
THUMP!!
THUMP!!
THUMP!!
It felt as though something alive had buried itself inside his chest. His fingers dug into his robes. Sweat rolled down his temples despite the freezing air.
Lytharion frowned; he took an instinctive step forward. "Why are you holding your heart...?"
Then—
SHIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNEEEE—!!!
A brilliant silver light burst through the fabric covering Kael’s chest; his robes slowly parted on their own as though moved by an unseen hand.
Above Kael’s heart...light gathered, not violently, almost...reverently. Slowly...an ancient crest revealed itself upon his skin.
Not burned by fire, not carved by claws. It appeared as though the moon itself had painted its blessing directly upon his soul.
A magnificent black wolf sat proudly beneath a crescent moon. Behind it...a half-moon curved gracefully across his chest. From the wolf’s silhouette drifted flowing ribbons of living shadow, circling the crescent like mist before disappearing beneath his skin.
The mark pulsed once.
Thump...
Again.
Thump...
With every pulse, the Heart Tree answered. Its silver veins glowed brighter. The crimson moon itself seemed to shine with greater intensity.
Then...everything became still.
Only silence.
Lytharion stared at the crest; his face had become completely expressionless, with no satisfaction, no pride, and no anger. Only...disbelief.
"That crest..." His voice had become barely a whisper. "Why would the Covenant choose...that one?"
His gaze slowly lifted from Kael’s chest...toward the Heart Tree, toward the crimson moon resting above its branches. For the first time...uncertainty crossed the face of the Shadow Sovereign.
"No...this should never have happened. Why..." Golden eyes remained fixed upon the ancient tree. "...why did you place it there?"
The chamber gave no answer; only the roots beneath the altar shifted softly before becoming still once more. Kael remained bent over, struggling to steady his breathing.
The pain was finally beginning to fade. Slowly...very slowly...he lowered his trembling hand; his amber eyes followed it.
Then...he saw it, the mark. His fingers shook as they carefully brushed across the strange crest resting above his heart.
It was warm, almost alive. The instant his fingertips touched it...the symbol pulsed gently beneath his skin.
Kael stared at the mark in disbelief before lifting his gaze toward Lytharion. The Shadow King’s face had grown unusually solemn.
There was no mockery, no cold smile, no satisfaction, only a silence Kael had never seen from him before.
A silence...that almost resembled concern.
Kael swallowed. "Did...did something go wrong?"
Lytharion remained silent; his eyes lingered on the mark for one final moment. Then...his expression hardened once more. The uncertainty disappeared behind the familiar mask of the Shadow Sovereign.
"The ritual is over. We’re leaving."
Kael frowned. "...Leaving?"
Lytharion walked toward the enormous doors without looking back. "Your father has fulfilled the first condition of my judgment. It is time I fulfill mine."
He stopped before the sealed entrance; without turning around, he spoke in a tone that allowed no argument.
"Follow me."
The ancient doors slowly opened, and cold night air poured into the chamber. Kael remained standing for another moment, his hand unconsciously rested over the strange mark.
The pain had vanished. In its place...there was warmth. A quiet, unfamiliar warmth that spread gently through his chest. Confused, he looked back one last time.
The Heart Tree no longer appeared terrifying. Its twisted branches swayed softly beneath the crimson moon. The roots that had once looked like grasping claws now rested peacefully upon the ancient stone.
Even the oppressive air filling the chamber had changed. For reasons Kael could not explain...the sacred place no longer felt hostile.
It felt...strangely calm, almost...as though the ancient tree itself had acknowledged him.
Kael frowned. "What... happened here?"
No answer came. Only the whisper of silver leaves dancing beneath the Red Lunar Moon. Taking one final breath... Kael turned away from the Heart Tree and followed Lytharion into the darkness beyond.
