Walking out the back door of the Second Elder’s hall led to an exquisitely maintained courtyard.
Lu Sangjiu followed the path for a short while before spotting a pavilion beside a rockery.
Inside the pavilion, the Sect Leader, still clad in his black robe, was lying comfortably on a chaise lounge with his eyes closed.
"Greetings, Sect Leader."
"Mm," he responded lazily. With a flick of his finger, Gu Jue’s storage bag flew over to Lu Sangjiu.
"Find what you need yourself."
Gu Jue’s Divine Sense had already been wiped from the storage bag, so anyone could now open it.
Lu Sangjiu took it without ceremony and began to rummage through it.
As she looked inside, she couldn’t help but marvel. ’Gu Jue is so rich!’
’Why is the gap in wealth so vast when we’re all Direct Disciples of the Four Great Sects?’
’Before I made my own fortune, the number of Spirit Stones I had wasn’t even a fraction of his. It’s heartbreaking!’
She resisted the urge to pocket a few Spirit Stones and, after rummaging through the numerous items for a moment, found the Communication Fireworks that Gu Jue had mentioned.
’Even though I don’t know what this is actually for, since Gu Jue said it was to send a message to Lu Sangjiu, then that’s what it’s for!’
Lu Sangjiu took it out, then respectfully returned the storage bag.
"Sect Leader, according to Gu Jue, this is the signal he uses to communicate with Lu Sangjiu. If we set it off, she’ll see it and know he’s in danger."
"As far as I know, their relationship is quite deep—they might even be cultivation partners. She will definitely not abandon Gu Jue."
Lu Sangjiu never thought she’d see the day she’d be spreading gossip about herself.
But right now, to convince them that Gu Jue could definitely draw out Lu Sangjiu, she had no choice but to leverage the past rumors.
"Cultivation partners? Heh. Then not killing Gu Jue was the right decision after all."
The man in the black robe asked lightly, "So, what’s your plan?"
"My idea is this: while she might not know that Gu Jue has been captured, we find a place to set an ambush, and then use the fireworks to lure her out. What do you think?"
"However, to make sure she’s not too afraid to appear, the ambush spot should probably be a bit farther from the camp."
Lu Sangjiu asked tentatively, "In that case, I wonder if it would be convenient for you to take action, Sect Leader?"
The black-robed man narrowed his eyes. "Oh? You think my personal intervention is necessary to deal with her?"
"She’s very resourceful. I’m just being cautious... If you don’t oversee this personally, Sect Leader, I’m afraid she’ll escape again."
After a moment of contemplation, the black-robed man said indifferently, "So be it. She is, after all, of critical importance to us. Making a personal trip for her is not out of the question."
Lu Sangjiu immediately bowed her head. "Then we must trouble you, Sect Leader!"
"I’ll go now to tell everyone to find a good spot for the ambush. Once everything is in place, I’ll send someone to notify you, Sect Leader!"
"Mm. Go on. I hope you can truly make this foolproof."
"If I make this trip for nothing... you understand the consequences."
Lu Sangjiu quickly agreed and was about to rise and take her leave.
At that moment, however, a sudden disturbance erupted from the pool behind the pavilion!
It sounded like a hungry beast, roaring in anger, demanding to be fed.
Moreover, what surged forth in that instant was unmistakably Demonic Qi!
Along with the fluctuation, a force shot straight toward Lu Sangjiu, as if trying to drag her whole into the depths of the pool.
The black-robed man’s expression changed. He immediately struck out, severing the force that had taken hold of Lu Sangjiu’s body.
As she put on a deliberately terrified and shaken expression, the black-robed man glanced at her sideways and said in a voice devoid of emotion, "Hurry up and go."
Lu Sangjiu immediately complied and turned in a panic. Looking thoroughly frightened, she practically fled the scene.
As she moved further away, she heard the black-robed man let out a soft sigh. "Your Eminence, this person is still of use. She is not food. I ask that you please be patient."
Lu Sangjiu frowned slightly. ’Your Eminence?’
’So, what exactly is this thing at the bottom of the pool that’s radiating Demonic Qi?’
’From the sound of it, is that thing the true supreme leader of the Qilin Sect?’
After leaving the back courtyard, Lu Sangjiu explained what the Sect Leader had permitted, and the Second Elder assigned some people to her.
She led the group back to her own courtyard, picked up Gu Jue and his companions, and then left the camp.
Along the way, she used her powerful Divine Sense to deliberately lead them into a few powerful demon beasts.
In the chaos of the battle, she seized the opportunity to slip Gu Jue the key to his Lock Spirit restraints and a Teleportation Talisman.
"Once the Divinity Transformation cultivator leaves, get out of here immediately."
She whispered the instruction, then used the fight with the demon beast to move away from him, giving him no opportunity to ask further questions.
’Otherwise, knowing Gu Jue’s personality, he would have refused to leave alone.’
’By giving him no chance to ask questions, she actually made him more cautious. He would worry that acting rashly might disrupt her plan, and so he would do as he was told.’
The group quickly dealt with the demon beasts, and no one noticed anything unusual about Gu Jue.
After leading them a fair distance from the camp, Lu Sangjiu finally stopped and said, "This spot will do. Everyone find a place and set up a defensive perimeter. Keep a close watch on Gu Jue. I’m going back to report to the Sect Leader."
She led some of the men back to the camp, but then claimed she needed to go back to retrieve something, telling another person to report the location to the Sect Leader in her stead.
The man was naturally eager for an opportunity to be noticed by the Sect Leader, so he went without a second thought.
In reality, of course, Lu Sangjiu didn’t need to retrieve anything. She hid in the shadows, waiting until the Sect Leader and the other man were far enough from the camp. Only then did she use Concealing Aura and sneak into the back courtyard.
With the Sect Leader lured away, the Second Elder was the only Nascent Soul Cultivator left to guard the camp.
By using Thousand Faces of Life, she could perfectly deceive the Second Elder and move about freely.
She was actually quite curious about the secret of the back courtyard, but the more pressing matter was to safely retrieve Gu Jue’s Phoenix Cry Sword.
The Phoenix Cry Sword was Gu Jue’s Lifebound Magical Treasure. As long as Gu Jue was alive, his Divine Sense would remain on it, preventing anyone else from putting it into a Storage Magical Treasure.
When she had come over that morning, she had carefully noted that the Phoenix Cry Sword had been carelessly tossed in a corner of the pavilion, along with Gu Jue’s storage bag.
So now, she avoided the pool, snatched up both the Phoenix Cry Sword and the storage bag with all possible speed, and prepared to leave.
However, the water in the pool seemed to sense her presence and suddenly began to churn, just as it had that morning!
Lu Sangjiu’s gaze hardened. ’This is bad!’
She immediately dodged and tried to flee, but she was still caught by that powerful force and dragged toward the pool.
At the same time, the Qilin Sect’s Sect Leader, who was lying in wait and preparing to strike, suddenly sensed something. His eyes darkened menacingly, and without a word, he turned and sped back toward the camp!
The dense fog they had laid out here was a special formation; not even a Divinity Transformation Stage expert could tear open a rift in space. Thus, no matter how anxious he was, he could only fly back.
His face was livid. He had already realized he’d likely been played!
