Chapter 39: Chapter 40: Big Black

Li Yang didn’t say anything more. Once the tabby cat was neutered, he said his goodbyes and left.

Back in the village, Li Yang started thinking about how to develop it.

’Raising chickens could work!’ Li Yang thought, recalling what Han Qiuyue had told him.

’Relying on just wild boar was too limiting.’

’That’s right! Plenty of people in the village raise chickens!’ Li Yang clapped his hands. ’The chickens here are grain-fed. They’ve got to be better than the ones from those big commercial farms.’

With that thought, Li Yang immediately went to find Zhou Liyun.

Zhou Liyun raised quite a few chickens at her home. When she saw Li Yang approaching, she hurried over to him. "Xiaoyang, what’s up?"

"Sister-in-law Liyun, your chickens look great!" Li Yang asked with a smile. "Do you have any to spare? Are they for sale?"

"Of course!" Zhou Liyun had thirty or forty chickens, all free-range behind her house. "Are you looking for one to eat? Don’t worry about buying it, I’ll just give you one."

’After all, Li Yang has helped me so much.’

"No, no, no..." Li Yang shook his head. "It’s not for me. The restaurant in the city wants to expand its order, and I know our village has plenty of chickens, so I thought I’d ask you."

"Oh, that’s great!" Zhou Liyun’s interest was instantly piqued. "If you want to sell to them, I’m all for it."

"Great!" Li Yang thought for a moment before adding, "Sister-in-law Liyun, how about this? Remember those vegetable plots we contracted? You could feed the leftover leaves to your chickens."

"I’m already doing that!" Zhou Liyun said with a smile. "They’d just go to waste otherwise, so I’ve been feeding them to the chickens."

"How many days have you been doing that?" Li Yang asked, his voice tinged with excitement.

"A good few days now," Zhou Liyun replied. "Is there a problem?"

"Let’s cook one up for dinner tonight and see how it tastes!" Li Yang said, his eyes lighting up.

"Sounds good! I’ll cook up a chicken for you tonight!"

...

That evening, Li Yang had dinner at Zhou Liyun’s house.

"Huh? Why does this chicken smell so amazing?" Zhou Liyun was baffled. "Xiaoyang, come smell this!"

Li Yang walked in, and a rich, savory aroma immediately wafted over him.

’It worked, just as I thought!’ Li Yang was thrilled.

"What do you mean?" Zhou Liyun still didn’t understand.

"You’ve eaten the vegetables I had you water, right?" Li Yang asked calmly.

"I have! They were incredibly delicious!" Zhou Liyun’s eyes lit up. "After eating those, all the vegetables I used to eat just taste bland in comparison."

"Right. The vegetables were improved, making them tastier than ordinary ones. But the leaves are just as special. After the chickens ate them, the quality of their meat improved too."

With Li Yang’s explanation, it all clicked for Zhou Liyun.

"Xiaoyang, that means those vegetables are a real treasure!"

"Of course they are!" Li Yang rubbed his hands together excitedly. "Collect all of those leaves for me. We can’t let a single one go to waste."

"Right, right, right..." Zhou Liyun nodded emphatically.

Once the chicken was served, they each took a bite.

’The meat was succulent and flavorful, worlds better than any ordinary chicken!’

Li Yang wolfed down several pieces before saying with satisfaction, "Sister-in-law Liyun, this will absolutely sell for a great price."

"Xiaoyang, so what’s the plan?" Zhou Liyun was getting excited too.

"Okay, here’s my idea. It looks like this vegetable farming is a business where nothing goes to waste. I’ll go rent all the fields behind my house so we can plant more. Otherwise, we’ll have a supply gap after this harvest is picked. I’ll also need to buy a simple feed grinder to turn the leaves into feed so we can store it. Finally, we’ll raise a few hundred chickens and give them the feed. Wouldn’t that be perfect?"

"You educated folk are really something else!" Zhou Liyun gave him a thumbs-up. "Xiaoyang, let’s do it."

"Alright. I’ll go rent the land tomorrow. It’s communal village property, so I should be able to lease it if I talk to the village leadership. When I do, you’ll have to help me manage everything. I’ll give you a raise," Li Yang said.

"Deal!" Zhou Liyun nodded eagerly.

After saying goodbye to Zhou Liyun, he had just gotten home when he saw a car pull in and screech to a halt right in his yard.

"Who the hell is this?" Li Yang was confused and couldn’t help but shout.

The car door opened, and two large dogs bounded out.

One of them immediately lunged at Li Yang, trying to bite him.

"Holy shit!" Li Yang jumped back, startled. He had a natural fear of dogs, after all.

"Let’s see you act so arrogant now!" Qin Susu got out of the driver’s seat, looking eager for a confrontation. "Get him... Big Black, get him!"

The dog, Big Black, seemed to go berserk, lunging viciously at Li Yang.

"You crazy brat!" Li Yang was furious. As Big Black charged, he lashed out with a kick.

THUD!

Big Black went sprawling, landing flat on its face. It shook its head, still looking defiant.

"You stupid mutt!" Li Yang barked. "Bite *her*!"

Big Black’s demeanor changed in an instant. It whipped its head around, its eyes locking onto Qin Susu.

"Big Black..." Qin Susu stared at the dog in horror. She could feel that something was terribly wrong.

Sure enough, the moment she called its name, Big Black was right in front of her.

"Dahuang, help me!" Qin Susu cried out to the other dog.
