Chapter 68: Chapter 69: Pandemonium

News of the buyout had already spread before dinner.

The villagers were all thrilled.

Rural areas have plenty of land, so every household raises chickens.

You might think they’d eat the chickens themselves, but for one, they couldn’t possibly eat that many, and for two, they couldn’t bear to.

So, any extra chickens were usually sold.

But selling them was a hassle. It was difficult to take them to the city, and you could only sell so many in the local township.

The most common way was to sell them to buyers who came down to the countryside.

But the price wasn’t high.

A free-range, grain-fed chicken from the countryside would commonly sell for fifty yuan a pound.

But when selling to the traders, you’d be lucky to get twenty-five.

Even then, sometimes you had to hold your nose and take the deal, because if you didn’t, you might not be able to sell them at all.

"How much per chicken? One hundred fifty each? That’s great!"

"They’re buying by the chicken, one hundred fifty! That’s not bad at all. A chicken is only about three pounds, after all!"

"That’s fantastic news! I always said Xiaoyang has a conscience. He’s not like those other buyers."

...

After dinner, a crowd had already gathered at Li Yang’s small clinic to ask about it.

"Listen up, everyone..." Li Yang said with a smile. "I’m the one buying the chickens, but you’ll need to deal with Sister-in-law Liyun. If you want to sell, go find her. She’ll be the one paying you."

"Alright!" The villagers happily went to find Zhou Liyun.

"Xiaoyang, about those medicinal herbs..." Li Min walked over, clearly wanting to ask something.

"Uncle Min, keep gathering them!" Li Yang said with a smile. "But I recommend you dry them before selling, don’t sell them fresh. Once they’re dried, I can give you a better price. They’ll be worth more."

"Got it!" Li Min said with a grin. "I was just worried you’d stop buying."

"Why would I stop? Keep gathering. I’ll buy as many as you can find!"

Li Yang’s words gave them a huge boost of confidence. They all sat around, chatting and laughing, their spirits lifted.

At some point, Xia Lian came over, carrying Xiaomu in her arms.

"Aunt Lian, what is it?" Li Yang asked.

"It’s nothing. I just wanted to ask when I can start working." Xia Lian looked a bit restless. "Everyone’s making money now—the ones gathering herbs, the ones selling chickens. I can’t gather herbs, and we don’t have many chickens at home. I’m counting on that salary from you, you know."

Li Yang smiled. "I went to check on it. The mushroom house is almost finished. Don’t worry, there will be plenty for you to do then, right?"

Xia Lian nodded. "I know. It just makes me anxious, having nothing to do."

’Li Yang understood. She’s getting anxious seeing everyone else earning money.’

"Aunt Lian, don’t you worry. Your chance to make money is coming."

The summer air was hot and muggy. The village’s main road ran right in front of the small clinic, and further down that road lay Bishui Lake.

That’s why cooling off here in the evening was one of the villagers’ favorite pastimes.

Besides, with those two big trees out front, you could pull up a chair and be in a spot so perfect even a god wouldn’t trade it.

"Right, Aunt Lian, didn’t your family raise some fish?" Li Yang asked.

"What’s the use of raising fish!" Xia Lian shook her head. "Several of them died, so that was a waste. The pond is empty now. And look at our Bishui Lake—it’s huge and full of fish, but they’re hard to catch."

Li Yang nodded.

"It’s a great spot for fishing, though!" Xia Lian spoke up again. "This is an absolutely perfect place to fish. I hear a lot of people from the city love fishing, but there are no lakes or rivers there. Don’t you think they’d be green with envy if they saw our huge lake?"

An idea suddenly sparked in Li Yang’s mind.

"Aunt Lian, you’re absolutely right!" Li Yang was getting excited now.

"Huh?" Xia Lian gave Li Yang a baffled, uncomprehending look.

"It’s nothing! Aunt Lian, you can officially start work at the mushroom house tomorrow. There are still some mushrooms there to take care of. Oh, right, you know how to prepare the spawn bags, don’t you? I’ve already bought the spawn. You can start preparing the bags, and once the new mushroom house is finished, we can put it into full operation."

"Great!"

The night grew late, and the crowd slowly dispersed.

Li Yang gazed out at Bishui Lake and suddenly burst into loud laughter.

The next day, Li Yang had just gotten out of bed when he was disturbed by the loud RUMBLE of a car outside. He went to take a look and, to his surprise, saw Qin Susu.

"What’s happened?" Li Yang felt a little sheepish seeing Qin Susu. "What are you doing here? By the way, is everything alright at home?"

"You have the nerve to ask!" Qin Susu shot him a glare and said irritably, "My family has practically fallen apart."

Li Yang was a bit embarrassed. "Well... it was mainly because your stepmother was being so nasty. I just... arranged for your dad to meet her lover. And I have to say, your younger siblings really do look a lot like him."

"You can say that again!" A sly grin finally broke across Qin Susu’s face. "You did a good job this time. The things Wu Juan did... keeping a man behind my dad’s back... If you hadn’t discovered it, who knows how long our family would have been fooled. You won’t believe it, but my dad gave Wu Juan a good thrashing. It was so satisfying to watch."

’Whoa! So something that dramatic actually happened.’

"She was trying to transfer my dad’s assets!" Qin Susu sneered. "Now I understand why my grandmother was never very interested in Wu Juan’s children. Turns out, Grandma knew from the very beginning they weren’t his. She just couldn’t bring herself to expose the truth."
