June was finally over.

I stood in the middle of Room 4B. Three advanced Constructs charged at me. They were fast, but to me, they looked like they were moving in slow motion.

I activated Wings and glided backward, floating inches above the floor. I looked at the three targets and activated Burn three times in a row.

Their heads melted instantly. The Constructs dissolved into pixels before they even got close to me.

I landed softly on my feet. After a whole month of fighting, it was just too easy.

"Status," I said out loud.

The blue screen popped up in front of my face.

Name: Shay Fawn

Level: 28

I had leveled up twenty times in a single month. The grinding was awful, but the reward was massive. I had exactly one hundred unallocated Attribute Points to spend.

Before, I only cared about Wisdom. I just wanted a huge BP pool so I could use my powers and avoid physical work. But the Black Hole ambush taught me a lesson. If a sniper shot at me, or a tank punched me, a high Wisdom stat wouldn't save my life. I was a glass cannon.

I needed to fix my weaknesses.

I put 20 points into Strength. 20 points into Agility. 20 points into Constitution.

Instantly, a hot wave of energy rushed through my body, tightening and expanding my muscles. My bones felt like solid steel and I felt incredibly light on my feet. I wasn't just a squishy Emitter anymore.

I had 40 points left.

My BP pool was already huge. Instead, I looked at the Charisma stat.

I dumped all 40 remaining points into Charisma.

A warm tingle washed over my face and posture. I walked over to the mirrored wall of the training room and looked at my reflection.

I smiled.

It was bright, natural, and completely blinding. My eyes looked kind. My posture looked noble. Even I felt like I could trust the guy in the mirror. It was terrifyingly perfect.

Because I had used them so much, both Burn and Wings had reached Level 5. They cost less BP to use now, and were much faster.

I swiped the Status Screen away.

I was strong. Fast. Tough. And I looked the part.

I walked out of the Private Zone and headed for the showers. Tomorrow was the first day of July.

It was time to introduce Seasons to the world.

I woke up, ate a plate of bacon, and put on my new suit.

I looked in the mirror, turned on my fake smile, and left my apartment.

I took the elevator up to the main briefing room in the Aegis Tower. When I walked through the double doors, seven other people were already there.

They were the other Aegis rookies.

Then, there was Genevieve.

She was standing in the corner, checking her hair in her phone screen.

She looked up when I walked into the room, her jaw dropping.

Genevieve marched over to me.

"Shay?" she asked, squinting. "What are you wearing? You look like a walking stoplight."

I kept the huge smile on my face. "Good morning, Genevieve! Actually, my Hero name is Seasons now. It is great to see you."

Genevieve actually took a step back, terrified.

"What is wrong with your face?" she asked. "Why are you smiling like that? Where is your hoodie? Are you sick?"

I wanted to roll my eyes and tell her to go away but I was playing the game now. I couldn’t do that anymore.

"I just feel really happy to be here," I said loudly, making sure the other rookies heard me. "We have the best jobs in the world!"

Genevieve stared at me like I was an alien. "You are creeping me out."

Before she could ask any more questions, the doors to the briefing room slid open.

Captain May walked in with two Aegis camera drones floating into the room right behind her, their recording lights blinking.

Instantly, Genevieve turned away from me and flashed a perfect smile at the drones.

I turned toward the cameras and smiled even brighter.

"Listen up, rookies," Captain May said, walking to the front of the room. "Welcome to your official Aegis Blessing Apprehension Test."

The other rookies immediately stood up straighter when they saw the drones.

Captain May tapped her tablet, and a large holographic screen appeared behind her. It showed a ladder with letters on it, going from F at the bottom to S at the top.

"Aegis Defense is a business," May said, looking at all of us. "We don't pay everyone the same. We pay you based on your value to the company. Today, we will determine that value."

She pointed to the holographic ladder.

"This test will decide your permanent Employee Ranking," May explained. "If you rank low, like F or E, you will be assigned to boring patrols in the outer districts. You will make a low base salary, and corporate sponsors will not be allowed to bid on you."

The rookies shifted nervously.

"But," May continued, "if you rank high, like A or S, you get the VIP treatment. High salary, easy patrols, and access to million-dollar corporate sponsorships. You become the face of Aegis."

I kept smiling at the cameras. That S-Rank spot was mine.

"The test is split into two parts," May said. "Part one is a physical stat check. We need to see your raw numbers. Part two is a live combat test in a C-Rank Zone. It will be broadcast live to the entire city. The public loves watching rookies fight."

Genevieve looked at me out of the corner of her eye and smirked.

I knew exactly what she was thinking.

"Any questions?" May asked.

Nobody raised their hand.

"Good," May said. "Follow the drones to the indoor testing facility. It is time to see what you are made of."

We all followed May out of the briefing room and into the elevator.

The drones hovered around us the whole way down. I made sure to stand near the front, keeping my posture perfect. I waved at the cameras a few times.

We walked into an indoor gymnasium. It had a running track, weightlifting machines, and targets set up against the far wall.

"Line up," May ordered. "Part one begins now."

"First up is the fifty-meter dash," Captain May announced.

We lined up on the running track as the drones hovered near the finish line, getting a clear shot of our faces.

Genevieve stretched her legs, looking confident. Her Agility stat was probably pretty high. The other rookies looked nervous.

I just stood there, smiling.

"Go!" May yelled.

I pushed off the starting block and shot forward like a bullet.

The wind rushed past my ears. I crossed the finish line before anyone else was even halfway down the track, barely breaking a sweat.

I turned around. Genevieve crossed the line a full two seconds after me. She was panting, staring at me with wide eyes.

"What?" she gasped. "How are you that fast?"

"I eat a lot of protein," I said cheerfully.

May looked at her tablet, her eyebrows raised. "Excellent time, Seasons."

Next was the grip strength test. We had to squeeze a metal machine as hard as we could.

Jerry went first. His stretchy arms weren't very strong. He scored a 40. Genevieve scored a 65.

I stepped up to the machine, gripped the metal handles and squeezed. My strength crushed the metal plates together and the machine beeped loudly.

I scored a 210.

The other rookies stared at me in shock.

"Is his Blessing super strength?" Trevor whispered to Liza.

"His file says he's an Emitter," Liza whispered back. "He shouldn't be that strong."

The last physical test was the ball throw. We had to throw a heavy metal ball as far as we could.

I picked up the ball. It felt light in my hands. I pulled my arm back and threw it. The ball sailed across the entire gymnasium and smashed into the far wall, leaving a dent in the concrete.

I placed first in every single category.

Genevieve walked up to me, looking furious. "You're cheating. You're using your wind to push yourself."

"I promise, I'm not," I smiled warmly. "I just worked really hard this month!"

She glared at me and walked away.

May tapped her tablet, finalizing the scores.

"The physical portion is complete," May said to the cameras. "Now, for the main event. We are moving to the C-Rank Zone. It is time for live combat.
