We took armored Aegis vans to the edge of District 4.
They had locked down an entire city block. It was an abandoned construction site filled with half-built skyscrapers, scaffolding, and piles of concrete.
It was a C-Rank Public Zone.
A large crowd of civilians was gathered behind the police barricades, cheering and holding up signs. Huge screens were set up around the perimeter, broadcasting the live feed from the drones.
We stepped out of the vans.
"Listen up," Captain May said, handing out earpieces. "This Zone is filled with Level 15 Constructs. They are fast and dangerous. Your job is to clear the Zone. The drones will record everything. Do not embarrass the company."
I put my earpiece in.
"Remember," Genevieve whispered to me, adjusting her hair. "You stay out of my way. I need this footage."
"Good luck, Frostbite!" I said loudly, smiling for a nearby drone.
The buzzer sounded and the gates opened.
We ran into the Zone.
The other rookies immediately panicked. Dozens of Constructs spawned from the shadows. They looked like mutated construction workers made of steel and concrete. They were huge and carried iron hammers.
Jerry tried to punch one, but his stretchy arm just bounced off the steel. The Construct swung its hammer, sending Jerry flying into a pile of dirt.
Valerie shot heat vision at another one, but it barely melted the concrete armor.
Genevieve went to work. She shot flashy blasts of ice, freezing the Constructs' legs to the ground. She posed perfectly after every shot, making sure the drones got her good side.
I ignored her. Freezing was boring.
I wanted to put on a show.
I looked at the nearest drone, flashed my golden smile, and activated my Wings Spell.
I shot straight up into the air, flying high above the construction site.
Three steel Constructs looked up at me and threw their iron hammers at the sky.
I smiled.
The hammers spun through the air, heading straight for my chest.
I grabbed the moisture in the air around me and flash-froze it into millions of microscopic ice crystals. Then, I used a gentle wind to spin the crystals around me like a sparkling tornado.
When the sunlight hit the ice crystals, it created a dazzling rainbow right in the middle of the sky.
It looked like magic.
The drones zoomed in, capturing the beautiful light show.
While the cameras were blinded by the sparkling rainbow, I went to work.
I looked at the three hammers flying at me and used a concentrated burst of air pressure to push them slightly off course. They missed me by inches, falling back down toward the ground.
Then, I looked at the three Constructs below me. They were staring up at the rainbow, completely distracted.
I aimed at their heads and used a micro-burst of extreme pressure right on their necks.
The sound was drowned out by the noise of the battle. The three Constructs collapsed, their heads snapping backward. They dissolved into pixels.
I canceled the rainbow and floated down to the ground, landing softly on my feet. I brushed a speck of dust off my suit and smiled at the nearest drone.
"Stay safe, everyone!" I said cheerfully.
I spent the next twenty minutes doing the exact same thing.
I flew around the construction site, creating beautiful light shows with wind and ice. I made it look like I was dancing through the air. And while the crowd and the cameras were mesmerized by the visuals, I quietly and efficiently snapped the Constructs' necks with invisible air pressure.

I cleared out half the Zone by myself.
The buzzer sounded again.
"Zone clear," Captain May's voice echoed in my earpiece. "Return to the entrance."
I walked back to the entrance with the other rookies.
Most of them looked terrible. Jerry was covered in mud. Trevor was out of breath. Valerie had a cut on her cheek. Even Genevieve looked tired. Her hair was messy, and she was panting.
I didn't have a single scratch on me. My gold and white suit was spotless. I wasn't even sweating.
When we walked out of the gates, the crowd went absolutely crazy.
They were cheering for me.
"Seasons!" a little girl screamed from behind the barricade, holding up a phone. "Seasons, look over here!"
I walked over, flashed my golden smile, and posed for a picture.
Genevieve stared at me, her face red with anger.
We got back in the vans and drove to the Aegis Tower. Captain May and Mr. Graves were waiting for us in the main briefing room.
"Excellent work, everyone," Mr. Graves said. "The live feed broke viewing records. Aegis stock is up two points."
He looked right at me.
"And Seasons," Mr. Graves said. "Your performance was spectacular. The public loves the light shows. You are exactly what this company needs right now."
May tapped her tablet, and the holographic ladder appeared on the screen again.
"We have finalized your Employee Rankings," May announced.
The names popped up next to the letters. Jerry, Trevor, and Mia were placed in E-Rank. Valerie and Rick got D-Rank. Liza got B-Rank.
Genevieve's name appeared next to the A-Rank. She smiled, looking relieved.
Then, my name appeared right above hers.
Seasons: S-Rank.
"Congratulations, Seasons," May said. "You are officially our top-ranked rookie. You will be moving to the penthouse suites tomorrow."
I smiled my fake smile. "Thank you, Captain! I'm just happy to be part of the team!"
Genevieve glared at me. I was officially her equal. And I had done it by being completely fake.
The next morning, we were back in the briefing room.
"Today is the final event of your evaluation," Captain May said. "The Team Battle Trial. This is a PvP indoor combat simulation. It will be broadcast live during prime time tonight."
May tapped her tablet and a map of a large office building appeared on the screen.
"The rules are simple," she explained. "Two of you will play the Villains. You will start inside the building and protect a mock System Core. Two of you will play the Heroes. Your job is to infiltrate the building, defeat the Villains, and touch the Core to win."
I leaned back in my chair. PvP sounded like a lot of running around and wasting energy.
"The matchups have been decided based on your new rankings," May continued. "For the main event, we have our two S-Rank Heroes against our top A-Rank and C-Rank Villains."
The screen changed to show the teams.
Heroes: Seasons and Frostbite.
Villains: Liza and Trevor.
I looked over at Genevieve who was already glaring at me.
"You're pairing me with him?" Genevieve complained. "He just flies around making rainbows. He didn't even fight yesterday!"
"He cleared half the Zone, Frostbite," May said. "The public wants to see our two S-Ranks work together. It is good for the brand."
"Fine," Genevieve huffed.
"Liza, Trevor," May said, looking at the other two. "You will be the Villains. Give them a good fight."
Liza and Trevor nodded. They looked nervous but determined.
"The match begins at 8:00 PM," May said. "Get some rest. Tonight, you show the world why Aegis is the best."
I went back to my new penthouse apartment. It was twice as big as my last one. I ordered a huge steak from room service and took a nap.
I wasn't worried about the match at all. I had a plan.
At 8:00 PM, the giant stadium lights turned on.
We stood outside a fake three-story office building. It was built just for this test. Dozens of silver media drones hovered in the air around us, their recording lights blinking.
Millions of people were watching us live on TV.
I stretched my arms and smiled at the nearest drone. My gold and white suit looked great under the bright lights.
Genevieve stood next to me, pacing back and forth.
"Listen to me," Genevieve whispered. "Liza can turn invisible. Trevor can shatter glass with his voice. This is not a joke. Do not get in my way."
"I won't," I said, keeping my smile perfectly fixed. "You can lead the way. I'll just watch your back."
She narrowed her eyes.
"Fine," she said. "Just don't do anything stupid."
A loud voice echoed over the loudspeakers. It was the announcer for the broadcast.
"Welcome, citizens!" the announcer yelled. "Tonight, our top Aegis rookies face off! Inside this building, the Villains are hiding the mock System Core. Can our S-Rank Heroes find it before time runs out?"
The crowd watching on the giant screens outside the Zone cheered loudly.
I checked my Status Screen in my mind.
BP: 195/195.
I was full. But I didn't plan on using much of it.
"Heroes," the announcer said. "You have thirty minutes. Begin!"
A loud buzzer echoed across the training field.
The front doors of the office building unlocked.
Genevieve kicked the front doors open and ran inside. Her hands were already glowing with blue mist.
I took a deep breath, flashed one more perfect smile to the camera drone, and walked inside at a comfortable pace.
