Hours passed, and the sun began to set.

I thawed a small strip of ice on the trail to let the returning teams back up onto the plateau.

Grace’s group came back carrying wild game and fresh fish from a nearby stream. Brock and Nelvin’s group arrived right behind them, hauling wood logs, vines, and stone materials.

For the next couple of hours, the class worked together. They cooked the meat over Koda’s magical fireplace and constructed basic wooden benches and survival tools.

Once everyone had eaten, Class Four gathered in a circle around the fire to draw up a game plan for the rest of the month.

"We need a strategy," Mai said, wiping her hands. "How are we going to win this exam?"

Brock burped. "We should conquer the island! Let’s march out tomorrow, smash every team we see, and capture every spot!"

"Oh, Brock, that's far too dangerous!" Grace chimed in. "If we get injured or drop out, we get massive point deductions! I think we should just hide and survive quietly until the thirty days are up!"

Nelvin shook his head, leaning back against a wooden bench. "Hiding is boring. Why don't we just defend this base? We have ice on the path, a cave, water, and fire. Nobody can get up here without us blowing them off the cliff."

"I agree with Nelvin!" I said, stepping forward. "Defending our cozy base is the safest, most efficient path to victory! No running around or unnecessary risks, and plenty of rest!"

Mai nodded in agreement. "Defending forces the other classes to come to us through a narrow bottleneck. It minimizes our casualties."

A quiet laugh echoed from the corner.

"How dreadfully boring," Koda said.

He stood up, stepping into the center of the circle.

"I have a much better idea," Koda smiled. "We target the other classes directly."

A gasp ran through the cave.

Brock stared at him like he was insane. "Are you fucking crazy, Painter?! The senior classes are Level 100-plus heroes with years of real field experience! We'll get wiped out!"

Koda raised his index finger and drew a glowing black-ink chart in the air above the fire.

"Let me educate you on something, Brock," Koda said.

He pointed to the floating numbers. "There are only twenty-five S-Tiers in the entire United States. Out of those twenty-five, only fourteen are employed as active Heroes."

Koda tapped his glowing finger against the chart, writing numbers next to logos.

"Locke has three," Koda explained. "Brand has five—and three of us are sitting in this very cave. Forbe has three. JJ and MTX have one each."

He swept his gaze across the faces of Class Four.

"Blessing Tier is King in this world," Koda said. "It doesn't matter how many years of experience those senior classes have, or how high their numbers look on paper. Out of the thirty-six students on this island, there are only two other real threats."

He flicked his finger, and the glowing chart dissolved into black smoke.

"So why waste thirty days hiding like rats, or waiting for them to find us?" Koda asked. "Rather than conquer spots or defend a cave... we take the fight directly to them. We hunt them."

Silence fell over the cave.

Brock looked stunned. Mai stared at Koda. Grace’s smile twitched.

I forced my "Seasons" smile to stay fixed on my face. "Well! When you put it like that, leader, hunting sounds like a lot of fun!"

"Then it's settled," Koda smiled. "Tomorrow, the hunt begins."

On the outside, I was grinning for the class. But on the inside, I wasn't smiling at all.

Hunting senior classes meant high danger, high effort, and massive physical exertion. It went against everything I stood for. Why would Koda want to actively seek out high-tier fights instead of sitting comfortably in a warm cave?

What angle was he playing?

We woke up bright and early the next morning before the sun had even cleared the mist. The hunt was officially on.

Koda led the way at the front of the group.

We moved through the forest at a rapid pace. To save energy, Mai opened short spatial portals every few hundred yards, warping us across miles of rugged terrain in seconds.

Whenever wild animals—bears or boars—tried to charge out from the brush, I flicked my hand, using Burn or Freeze to melt them or freeze them solid without breaking stride.

If there were boulders or fallen trees in our path, Brock ran ahead and smashed them to dust with his Titan Muscle.

After two hours of tracking through the wilderness, we reached a secluded clearing near a river.

Hidden among the trees were six large pitched tents, smoking fire pits, and leftover food. We had found our first target: Class Three.

They were one of the senior Brand classes, led by two ranked A-Tier Heroes.

Standing near the main fire pit was Pro Hero Rank 534, Reverso (Chris Hamster). His A-Tier Blessing allowed him to reverse time by three seconds. Standing next to him was Pro Hero Rank 581, Electro (Maya Bay), an A-Tier who could manipulate electricity and generate forcefields.

Mai stopped behind a tree, preparing to map out an ambush. "Alright, let's assess their defenses first—"

Before she could finish her sentence, Koda attacked.

Without waiting for the team or making a plan, Koda raised his finger and drew a massive abyss directly under Class Three's tents. The earth split open in an instant.

"Jump!" Electro screamed, her hands flaring with lightning.

As the tents began to fall, Reverso raised his hand and activated his Blessing.

A golden ripple ran through the air.

Reverse.

Reality went backwards. The ground sealed itself back up, the abyss vanished, and before we could even comprehend what had happened, Class Three was no longer in front of us.

They were standing directly behind us.

"Time-reversing bullshit!" Brock yelled, spinning around in a panic.

Caught completely off guard by the time jump, my body acted on pure instinct.

Freeze!

A circular wave of cold exploded outward, freezing the grass, trees, and air in a thirty-foot radius.

Instantly, Electro generated a forcefield of lightning around Class Three, deflecting the wave of freezing air away from her team.

I quickly looked around to check on Class Four. Everyone was safe—Mai had opened a dome-shaped spatial portal around our team, shielding us from my own freeze wave and any electrical counter-attack.

Up in the air, twenty feet above the clearing, Koda was standing on a floating platform he had created, looking down at the battlefield.

I stepped out of Mai’s spatial dome and turned to face Reverso and Electro.

I flashed my golden smile.

"Don't worry, citizens!" I announced cheerfully. "I will make this quick."

Koda attacked again, flying across the sky on his platform.

But this time, he didn't try any traps. Koda fought defensively from above. He rained down dozens of spheres, nets, and weights, wearing Reverso down from a safe distance. Every time Reverso used his Blessing to rewind three seconds, Koda just flicked his finger and drew three more projectiles.

I was not having as easy of a time.

Electro was a hard counter to my elemental abilities. Whenever I tried to create wind currents or use moisture in the air, her lightning arced right through my attacks, using the air itself to conduct her power. When I tried to use Burn or Freeze, her electrical forcefield absorbed the temperature changes without cracking.

After ten minutes of continuous combat, I took a step back, breathing hard, and glanced over my shoulder at my class.

The situation was terrible.

The rest of our class was paralyzed. They were huddled near the treeline, trembling in fear. Even Mai was shaking, her hands trembling so badly she couldn't keep a portal stable. Facing senior Heroes in a real fight had completely broken their composure. Without a clear plan, Class Four was entirely incapacitated.

Then I realized someone was missing.

Where the fuck is Brock?

A deafening explosion echoed to my right. A massive bolt of lightning tore through the clearing, blasting Brock fifty feet through the air. He slammed violently into a cliff, his head dropping back, and he slumped into the ground, knocked out instantly.

"Brock!" Mai gasped.

She reacted on instinct, flinging a spatial portal under Brock's body and warping him back behind our cover. I checked his status through the team HUD. His HP was low, but thanks to his Blessing, he hadn't suffered any broken bones. Still, it was a terrifyingly close call.

I looked back at Electro. She was walking slowly toward me, her hands crackling with high-voltage electricity, her forcefield glowing brightly around her body.

I scanned her with my System interface.

[Target: Electro (Maya Bay) - Level 158]

Level 158.

I was Level 60. The level gap between us was nearly a hundred levels. My basic Burn and Freeze tricks weren't going to be enough to pierce a Level 158 forcefield.

I was going to have to try something drastic and tap into the only advantage I had over her.

I tilted my head back and looked up at the sky.

A dangerous idea popped into my head.
