Koda’s finger moved with blinding speed, tracing a shape directly in the air. A shield solidified right in front of him.
At the same time, I wrapped my body in a whirlwind.
Zado Tan slowly stood up from the chair. He picked it up and tossed it by the side of the road.
His hands began to glow with a green aura.
A second later, he was gone.
The middle of the road was completely empty. "Where did he go?"
"Haunted Prison," a voice spoken right behind our backs.
A massive cage made of green bars slammed down out of air, trapping both Koda and me inside.
Green goo coated the bars, sizzling loudly as it ate through the street.
Koda thrust his shield forward, smashing it against a bar before the green goo could cover it. The impact shattered a hole in the side of the cage, and Koda leaped backward onto the road.
Before I could follow him, the green bars sealed shut around me, trapping me inside the box.
"Interesting... your shield," Zado muttered softly. "I remember a story about a guy with a shield once. It went like..."
Zado stopped talking and stood completely still in the middle of the road, staring blankly into space.
"...It will come to me," Zado finally said.
Koda tilted his head. "How did you do that?"
Zado turned his eyes toward Koda. "Did what?"
"Create that cage," Koda said.
"It's just a spell," Zado replied. "Albeit, a personalized one."
Zado shook his head slightly. "Alright. Enough talk."
Zado shot forward like a bullet, rushing straight at Koda.
Inside the cage, the burning green goo dripped down toward my head.
Freeze!
The burning acid froze into green icicles.
I kicked the frozen bars with all my strength, but they barely cracked. Even frozen, the spell was too dense to shatter with a basic physical hit.
I looked through the ice bars at Zado and Koda.
He didn't make this cage to kill me, I realized. He made it to separate us. He knows he's fighting two S-Tiers, so he's isolating us to take us down one-by-one.
Outside, Koda was dodging Zado's green energy strikes, his finger frantically tracing lines in the air.
I needed a spell with cutting power.
I closed my eyes and focused every ounce of my mind.
I envisioned a sword. A blade forged from plasma. A blade so condensed and hot it could cut through any structure, barrier, and cage in the world.
I held the image in my mind, refining the edge, the density, and the heat.
Minutes ticked by.
After intense concentration, the image in my brain became clear.
[System Recognition Achieved.]
[New Spell Unlocked: 5th Degree (Level 1)]
[Description: Creates a giant blade of superheated plasma in the air capable of slicing through high-tier barriers and physical structures.]
I opened my eyes and raised my hand above my head. "5th Degree."
A sword of plasma materialized in the air directly above the cage. I brought my hand down in a chopping motion.
The plasma blade swung down, slicing through the cage like butter.
The cage shattered into pixels.

I stepped out, taking a deep breath of air.
I stretched my shoulders and raised my hands.
"Time to get back in action," I said.
Wings.
Holding the 5th Degree in my hand, I glided at blinding speed behind Zado Tan and swung the blade straight for his neck.
The plasma blade sliced through thin air. Zado vanished right before the hit landed, reappearing away on the white lane line.
Zado rubbed his chin, staring off into space. "This is not good at all."
He turned his eyes toward our SUV. "If I get near the vehicle, your friend inside will just warp the engineer away. And if I fight the two of you here, I will have significant difficulty. I am an assassin, not a hero or villain."
Zado sat down crisscrossed and closed his eyes.
I stared down at him in shock. "What is he doing?"
Down on the road, Koda chimed in. "I believe he is deliberating, Seasons."
For ten seconds, the road was completely quiet except for the wind.
Finally, Zado opened his eyes, stood up slowly, and cracked his neck.
"I'll just have to kill all of you," Zado said.
He raised both palms toward the sky. "Rings of Chaos."
Three green rings materialized above the road. They expanded rapidly, encircling Shay, Koda, and the SUV. The sky turned green as the rings locked us in and began to contract.
I gripped my sword, preparing to dump my BP into a massive wind shield, but right before the energy touched us—
The entire world went pitch black.
Everything vanished. Two pink moons appeared in the sky above us.
The illusion shattered.
The green rings were gone. Standing in the middle of the road, right between Zado and our SUV, were three people.
Chloe, Marlon, and a third girl.
Zado stared at the new arrivals. "Oh, you have got to be kidding me."
Marlon responded. "Get the engineer to Hilon. We've got this from here."
I didn't argue. "Works for me."
I sprinted back to the SUV with Koda right behind me. We jumped into the back seats and slammed the doors shut.
"Floor it," I told the driver.
The driver smashed the gas pedal, and the SUV roared forward, speeding past the standoff down the final stretch of the road.
Later, we pulled into the secure underground parking garage of the main building.
The doors unlocked.
Francis grabbed his beer can and stepped out. He walked straight into the elevator and rode it up into the building.
Mai snorted. "Charming guy. Really knows how to show appreciation."

[Level Up!]
I opened my Status Screen.
Name: Shay Fawn
Level: 101
I smiled. A hundred and fifty thousand dollars in my bank account, and I hit Level 101. A fulfilling day.
Mai looked out the garage doors toward the distant sound of explosions echoing from the access road.
"Are you going to go back and help your sister?" Mai asked, turning to me.
I looked at her like she was crazy. "No. Why the hell would I?"
"Because she's fighting a Level 401 assassin!" Mai said.
"She's a Level 100+ S-Tier Pro Hero with two teammates," I shrugged, pushing my door open. "She'll be fine."
Wings.
"I'm going back to my hotel," I said, lifting off the ground. "I need a long shower and a nap."
I flew out of the underground garage and shot up into the sky.
I woke up early in the morning.
I didn't feel like going to the facility today.
It was a sunny day, so I decided to walk down to the beach.
When I arrived, the boardwalk was packed. Thousands of people were walking around, buying ice cream, and hanging out in the sun. In Drofman, the second I stepped outside in public, media drones would swarm me and crowds would ask for autographs.
Here, nobody gave me a second glance.
I took a sip of my water and smiled. I'm a nobody here. That's great.
I walked over to the railing along the boardwalk and looked out at the ocean. People were swimming, and surfers were riding massive waves as they rolled toward the shore. Watching those giant walls of water crash against the sand gave me a sudden idea.
I turned around and started walking away from the coast.
I walked two miles inland into the run-down industrial sector until I found what I was looking for: an abandoned skateboard park. It was huge and surrounded by brick walls.
I walked into the center of the rink and looked around. Perfect.
I pointed my finger at the center of the floor.
"Deluge."
A tiny puddle of water formed.
I frowned. "That's it? A puddle?"
Then, the puddle began to boil.
The puddle expanded into a rushing stream. Five seconds later, the stream erupted into a lake.
The ground beneath my feet shook. A colossal wave of water came straight out of the floor, rising high into the sky.
My eyes widened. "Holy fuck!"
Wings!
I shot straight up into the air just as the wave crashed down directly where I had been standing.
The force of the water was monstrous. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of water slammed into the ground, shattering the surrounding walls, snapping light poles, and filling the skating park like an ocean.
I watched the water swirl beneath my feet.
I had literally created a flood out of thin air.
I stayed in the air until the spell finally ended and the water began to slowly drain away.
"These abilities will be very useful for the future," I said.
