A month passed quickly.
I stuck to a simple routine. During the day, I took on minor contracts alongside Mai and Koda. We cleared contracts, defeated villains, and secured zones around California.
The XP payout was massive. I had leveled up four times.
[Level: 105]
I finally moved out of the hotel and signed a lease on an apartment right on the beach.
It cost twenty-four thousand dollars a month, but was worth every single penny. The place was huge, with a massive balcony, and an unobstructed view of the ocean.
One morning, I was jogging along the sand near the water, when my phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out. It was a text from Yani Love.
Facility. Now.
When I arrived, everyone was already gathered.
"Alright, take a seat," Yani said as I walked in. "It's time for the annual Contractor Exam."
Brock leaned forward, slamming his fists onto the table. "What is the Contractor Exam?"

"It's the biggest event of the year," Yani explained. "Heroes from every major defense contractor in the country gather in Texas to compete for their agency."
Yani tapped a button on the podium, lighting up a holographic map of America.
"The entire event is broadcast globally to millions of viewers," Yani continued. "And because it's hosted by the various defense contractors, high-ranking generals from the military attend. In the past, the top performers got recruited straight into the military."
Nelvin swallowed hard. "The military?"
"It begins in a week," Yani said, turning off the hologram. "But we're leaving tonight to set up our base camp. Pack whatever gear you need and report to the airfield at ten PM sharp."
I left the facility and took a car back to my apartment.
I packed a light duffel bag and put on a jumpsuit.
My driver dropped me off at the airfield.
A jet sat idling on the runway.
I walked up the stairs and stepped into the cabin. The interior was pure luxury—leather reclining chairs, blue floorboards, and a fully stocked bar.
Koda was already sitting in a leather seat near the middle of the cabin.
He looked up as I tossed my duffel bag into the overhead compartment.
"Excited, Seasons?" Koda asked with a smile.
I slumped down into the seat across from him. "No. But I'll make the best of it."
I leaned my head back against the headrest.
"I am curious about one thing, though," I added. "I want to see how the other S-Tiers perform. Especially Almighty."
Koda's smile widened slightly. "Ah. The star of Brand."
I pulled a pair of headphones out of my pocket, slipped them over my ears, and turned on my music.
I closed my eyes, leaned back, and dozed off as the engines started up.
