Chapter 104: Chapter 104: The System’s Task

After that night, Dominic Vance seemed to have transformed into a completely different person. To say he was different was not entirely accurate, for he still spoke very little and still wore that same icy, expressionless face; however, at the very least, he appeared to have reverted to that initial period when he first tasted desire, still cherishing Lucien immensely.

Of course, it did not reach the level of depravity of those early days, where he would just abandon his work to go home or rarely show up at the company. But Dominic Vance did begin to come home much earlier.

Some days it was five o’clock, other days it was six, but never later than seven in the evening. There were days when Lucien had not even finished cooking dinner before hearing the sound of the car rolling into the garage. He would trot out, his hands still covered in flour, his eyes curving into smiling crescents: "You are home!".

Dominic Vance merely gave an "mhm", but his gaze quickly swept over Lucien’s left arm, as if checking to ensure the bandage was still intact.

Every single morning, he would personally change Lucien’s bandages. Exactly at seven o’clock, he would bring out the first-aid kit, sit down on the edge of the bed, and gently remove the old dressing. His movements were so skilled that Lucien suspected Dominic had taken some sort of advanced first-aid course. Cleaning the wound, applying the ointment, wrapping the gauze, everything was done with utmost care and extreme slowness, as if Lucien’s arm was a fragile piece of porcelain.

Lucien lay perfectly still, his eyes half-closed, occasionally letting out a soft, token "hiss" just for show. But it was strange indeed; clearly, it was merely an act, yet every time Dominic bent down to blow softly on the wound, Lucien’s heart would beat just a little bit faster.

Something was definitely wrong. It must just be because people are easily emotional early in the morning.

Lucien continued to play his part. He cooked, painted, and arranged flowers; every evening, he went to the door to welcome Dominic with a smile as radiant as the sun. He even deliberately learned a few new recipes, pan-seared salmon with orange sauce, honey-glazed baked ribsm, plating them as beautifully as a high-end restaurant. Dominic Vance never offered any praise, but he finished everything every single time, not even leaving the last bite.

"Is it delicious?" Lucien asked, resting his chin on his hands, his eyes sparkling brightly.

"It is acceptable." He replied, but his hand was already reaching for another piece.

Lucien chuckled inwardly. Acceptable his foot, the plate was practically empty.

One afternoon, while Lucien was sitting in the living room painting, a familiar "ding" suddenly echoed in his mind.

[Side Mission: Within the next three days, create three moments that make the male lead think of the host when the host is absent. Reward: 40 impression points + unlocking a new sensation in bed.]

Lucien almost dragged his paintbrush off the canvas. He took a deep breath, calmly set the brush down, and muttered silently in his mind, "What kind of nonsense are you making up now, 000?"

[This is an entirely real mission. The system does not lie.]

"Right, it is not like you are human enough to lie anyway."

[Please do not personally attack your system.]

Lately, the system seemed to have undergone a bit too many updates; its temperament was erratic, and Lucien could not even guess whether the entity communicating with him was the first personality or the second.

So, Lucien simply ignored it and spent a moment pondering.

Three moments to make someone remember him in his absence, it sounded difficult, but in reality, it was quite simple. All he needed to do was slip something of his own into Dominic’s personal space.

That very evening, he secretly tucked a small handkerchief embroidered with the initials "L.A" into the pocket of Dominic Vance’s suit jacket. The following morning, when Dominic arrived at the company and reached into his pocket intending to take out a pen, he ended up pulling out a silver-grey silk handkerchief. He stood frozen for a few seconds, his thumb unconsciously tracing the embroidered stitching, then shoved it back into his pocket without saying a word. However, for that entire morning, the handkerchief remained neatly placed on his desk.

Seeing the progress going quite simply, Lucien clicked his tongue.

"Hey 000, why could the world not find me a slightly more normal setting?"

[I find this world perfectly normal? There are some worlds where the protagonists are much crazier.]

"Yeah, I think being crazy is still fine, but this world feels like it is tricking children. These mindless actions actually get acknowledged? With an IQ at this level managing to be a CEO, I am somewhat concerned for the human race and the economy of this world."

000 remained silent for a moment before speaking up reluctantly: [As long as the world does not collapse, it is fine.]

Lucien: "..."

It felt just like being scammed; other people got scammed into working for shell companies, while he was scammed into selling himself to a ghost system.

Two days later, during dinner, Lucien accidentally let out a soft cough. Actually, it was not entirely intentional; he had gone out to the balcony in the afternoon to paint, and the autumn breeze had been a bit chilly, leaving his throat slightly itchy. As he was carrying the bowl of soup to the table, he suddenly let out a dry cough, the hoarse sound ringing out in the quiet room.

Dominic Vance, who had been flipping through the newspaper, instantly stopped his hand. He looked up at Lucien, his brows slightly furrowed: "Did you catch a cold?".

"No, not at all, my throat is just a little itchy." Lucien waved his hand, offering an apologetic smile.

Dominic Vance did not seem to believe it; the man stood up, walked closer, and pressed the back of his hand against Lucien’s forehead. The warmth from his skin transferred over, bringing with it the faint scent of sandalwood. He held his hand there for a few seconds before pulling away, his voice remaining steady but his eyes clearly displaying concern: "Good thing it is not hot, but do not go out catching the wind like that again tomorrow; remember to wear an extra layer."

"Yes."

Lucien lowered his head, answering obediently.

This utterly ridiculous moment was automatically awarded an extra point for the mission by the system, and Lucien genuinely did not know what to say anymore. It must be extremely desperate to push him into quickly escaping this world.

As for the third moment, he planned to bake an apple pie and draw a heart on its surface using caramel sauce. That pie would sit on the table, radiating a sweet, fragrant aroma throughout the room, and when Dominic came home and saw it, he would remember that someone had spent the entire afternoon in the kitchen just to make him happy.
