Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Lingering Shadows

And so, that morning, Lucien grabbed a basket and headed to the supermarket.

He wore a thin cream-colored sweater, wrapped a scarf securely around his neck, and kept his still-bandaged arm well-hidden within his long sleeve. Before leaving, he did not forget to send Dominic Vance a text message: "I am heading to the supermarket to buy baking ingredients, I will be back soon. Today I am planning to make your favorite dish."

After hitting send, he smiled to himself and pushed the door open to step outside.

The supermarket was not very crowded that day. Lucien leisurely pushed the cart through the aisles, picking out plump red apples, a bag of almond flour, and a few fragrant vanilla beans. He also conveniently grabbed a bouquet of pale blue hydrangeas, planning to arrange them in the glass vase next to the dining table. Everything was wrapped up in an air of tranquility, so gentle that even he himself almost believed he truly was a happy little wife.

Upon leaving the supermarket, he did not head straight home. He turned into the small street around the back, where there was an old grocery store selling some dried nuts that he wanted to sprinkle on top of the pie. The alleyway was deserted, with only the sound of dry leaves rustling underfoot and a few pale rays of sunlight scattering across the low rooftops.

Right in that hidden corner, a figure suddenly blocked his path.

Miles Sinclair.

He looked so haggard that Lucien almost failed to recognize him. The face that was once handsome and arrogant was now unusually gaunt, and his eyes were bloodshot as if he lacked sleep or had just awoken from a long, drunken stupor. The clothes on his body were crumpled, making him look exactly like a vagrant who had just crawled out of some ditch.

Was his father truly ruthless enough to completely abandon him?

Lucien thought idly, then absentmindedly met Miles’s gaze. The bloodshot eyes looked extremely terrifying, appearing as if he could lunge forward and devour the person standing across from him alive.

"Are you so very happy?" Miles’s voice was exceedingly hoarse, grinding out every single word. He stepped forward, backing Lucien right up against the brick wall: "Stealing Dominic Vance, making me lose absolutely everything, and now you are laughing in my face?".

Lucien hugged the grocery bag against his chest, calmly looking up at the man who was trembling with rage.

"What exactly have I stolen from you?" He chuckled softly, completely apathetic: "All of those things were originally mine to begin with. Miles Sinclair, you and your mother used a thousand schemes and a hundred plots to steal what belonged to me, and in the end, the items simply returned to their rightful owner. Look and see who the truly pathetic one is here? You already held it in your hands, yet you let it slip away yourself, why blame anyone else?"

"Shut up!" Miles roared. His trembling hand reached into his inner pocket, and then a gleaming steel blade flashed: "You are lying! This is all because of you... I will make you pay..."

He swung the knife upward, charging madly toward Lucien. But before the blade could even graze Lucien’s body, a large dark shadow darted out from nowhere, as fast as lightning. In a mere fraction of a second, Miles’s wrist was forcefully twisted behind his back, and the knife fell onto the brick floor with a sharp clatter. A man dressed in black, wearing an earpiece, had already securely locked both of Miles’s arms behind his back.

Miles struggled frantically, screaming: "Let go of me! Lucien, you despicable... you dared to plant someone to follow me..."

"Mr. Sinclair, please calm down." The bodyguard said in an even tone, then shot a quick glance toward Lucien: "Mr. Lucien, are you alright? CEO Vance instructed us to ensure your safety 24/7. I apologize that you had to witness this scene."

Lucien shook his head slightly. He bent down, picked up the knife, and neatly placed it into his paper bag like a piece of garbage that needed to be thrown away. Then he stepped closer to Miles, looking at Miles’s desperately struggling figure, and could not help but let out a mocking scoff: "What is the point of seeking this crazy revenge against me? Even if I were to die, you would not end up any better. You are only torturing yourself. As for me? I am living very well, very happily, I have no need to take revenge on you. I am guessing seeing me like this makes you absolutely furious, does it not? What a pity that there is nothing you can do about it."

Miles raised his head to glare at Lucien with a gaze completely twisted by hatred: "Do you think you can be happy this easily? Dominic Vance threw me away, and eventually, there will come a time when he throws you away too."

Lucien’s movements halted for a brief moment, but he still smiled until his eyes curved: "So what? Right now I am still happy, while you are not."

Miles wanted to scream again, but his mouth was covered by the bodyguard as he was dragged away. Lucien stood perfectly still for a long while, tightly hugging the bag of groceries in his arms. He looked up at the sky; the sunlight had already faded considerably.

"000, do you think that child could feel any of this?"

[Do you mean the original host?]

"Mhm."

[The novel world does not sustain souls, so he will not know. It is just that dying in this world means he will appear in some other world, continuing his life.]

"Just like those people who transmigrate into books, right? Transmigrating to another world, if they are lucky, they become the main character. If they are unlucky, they live a difficult life as cannon fodder."

[Or just a normal person, being a normal person is good too.]

"Mhm."

Lucien replied softly, then quietly headed back.

Upon returning to the villa, Lucien still tried his best to bake the pie as he had originally planned. He kneaded the dough, peeled the apples, sprinkled the cinnamon, everything was done in proper order. But just as he pulled out the baking tray and set the golden-brown apple pie onto the kitchen counter, he suddenly felt his body sway. His forehead began to burn fiercely, and his throat was raw and aching.

He touched a hand to his own forehead, it was blazing hot.

"Is this a side effect of the failed integration again?" He murmured the question, but 000 did not answer. There was only the steady ticking of the clock.

Lucien poured himself a glass of warm water, taking small sips before slumping down onto the sofa, pulling a thin blanket over his body. He closed his eyes, intending to take a short nap to ease his exhaustion. But the fever surged higher by the minute, his skin burning hot while his insides felt freezing cold. Wave after wave of shivering washed over him, causing him to curl up into a tight ball.

When Dominic Vance opened the door and stepped inside, the very first thing he smelled was the fragrant aroma of apple pie. But immediately after, he noticed the abnormality. The entire house was eerily silent; there was no sound of hurried slippers coming out to welcome him, nor was there the ever-present crescent-eyed smile waiting by the door.

He strode quickly into the living room, then froze. On the sofa, a small figure was curled up, his face flushed bright red, his dry, cracked lips trembling.

"Lucien?" He stepped forward, kneeling down beside him, his large hand pressing against Lucien’s forehead. Touching the burning skin, he flinched as if he had been scalded: "You have a fever."

Lucien weakly fluttered his eyes open, recognizing the person in front of him, and hastily offered a forced smile. His feeble hand grasped onto Dominic’s sleeve: "You are home... I am sorry, I am just a little bit tired. The apple pie I made is finished, you should try some... It is very delicious..."

Before he could even finish his sentence, another coughing fit struck, causing his entire body to shake violently. Dominic Vance immediately slipped his arms under Lucien’s back and knees, scooping him up just like carrying a child.

"Leave the pie there. Now stay quiet, let me call the doctor. You really do not know how to take care of yourself at all."
