Chapter 129: Chapter 129: The Special Mission

At noon, Lucien deliberately went to the pantry a little later than everyone else. He did not want to run into Chris or Linda again. When he arrived, only Mark was standing there alone, holding a cup of instant noodles in his hand, waiting for the water to boil.

"You have not had lunch yet?" Lucien asked, his voice as natural as if the two of them had known each other for a long time.

Mark startled and turned around; seeing that it was Lucien, Mark slightly relaxed his shoulders: "Yeah, I... I often eat lunch late to avoid the crowd."

Lucien nodded and poured hot water into his own cup of noodles. The two of them stood next to each other in silence for a moment, then Lucien spoke up, "The notebook you gave me this morning, I have read it. There are several parts that are written very well, especially the section on how to optimize layers in Illustrator. I had never thought of that method."

Mark’s eyes lit up a little behind his glasses: "Really? I thought those notes were just for me to read myself. I did not expect anyone to find them useful."

"They are very useful." Lucien replied: "Did you compile all of them yourself?"

"Yes. I often tinker with the new features and write them down, it is really nothing major."

Lucien looked at Mark. Mark said "nothing major" with the tone of someone who was all too accustomed to having his achievements completely underestimated.

"Have you ever thought about sharing these notes with the whole department? I think many people would need them."

Mark shook his head: "I do not think they would care. Besides, I also do not want to... attract any attention."

"Because of Ethan?"

Mark froze, the hands holding the noodle cup trembling slightly. He did not answer, but that sheer silence was the clearest answer of all.

Lucien did not ask anything more; he merely gave a slight nod, then carried his cup of noodles back to his desk. Before stepping out of the pantry, he paused for a brief moment.

"Thank you for the notebook, let me finish reading it all and then I will return it."

Mark looked up, blinking softly: "Yeah... take your time, it is fine."

Lucien returned to his seat, eating his noodles while continuing to flip through the notebook. 000 appeared again, this time perching on the edge of the noodle cup.

[Hey, I see you are making acquaintances quite fast. It has only been one morning and you have already made this much progress.]

"It is not enough, I have only just gotten him to start communicating with me more. If I want Mark to truly stand on my side, I need to prove that I have the capability to turn the tables. And to achieve that, I need an opportunity."

[What opportunity?]

"A project big enough for everyone to see. And important enough that Damian Thorne will also have to see it."

[Are we going back to the old plan?]

"Yes. But this time, I will not do it alone. I will pull Mark into it; on my own, I am just an eccentric intern. But if the two of us do it together, it becomes a team. And in this company, a team always carries more weight than an individual."

000 fell silent for a moment.

[You really are the type of person who turns everything into a calculated plan. Even making friends comes with a fully fleshed-out strategy.]

"This is not making friends." Lucien replied: "This is survival, in the previous world, you forced me to stand and watch for ten years. I do not intend to waste another ten years in this world just because of Ethan Lee’s petty office games."

He closed the notebook, stood up, and threw the noodle cup into the trash can. Returning to the desk, he reopened his Illustrator file. The poster sketch was still unfinished on the monitor, but inside his mind, it had already taken on a much clearer form.

Lucien started drawing again. This time, his strokes were much faster and more decisive. It was because he was not just drawing a simple poster; he was drawing the path to escape from this godforsaken intern position.

That evening, Lucien returned to the original owner’s small apartment. The apartment was located on the fourth floor of an old building, its furnishings so simple that it felt almost entirely empty. A bed, a desk, a wardrobe, and an outdated laptop sitting on the desk. He took off his jacket while contemplating everything that had transpired during the day. Mark, Sarah, Ethan, Damian, each face appeared one by one in his head like chess pieces on a chessboard.

000 had appeared at some unknown point, its transparent wings flapping briskly in the air. It did not land on the desk as usual, but instead kept hovering right in front of his face with the exact expression of someone about to cause trouble.

[Hey, Host, I have some good news for you.]

Lucien glanced at the system while taking off his shoes: "What good news? Are you about to let me go home?"

[Not exactly.] 000 giggled, its chubby body jiggling along with every beat of its wings. [It is a special mission, the very first mission of this world.]

Lucien stopped what he was doing and looked all the way up at it. "A mission? You have not assigned me any missions in this world at all. Why is there suddenly one now?"

[Well, the system has its own designated schedule. Did you think I could just assign things whenever I pleased?] 000 pouted, then read aloud in a shrill voice as if reciting an official document: [Special Mission: Within seven days, create at least one moment of physical contact with Damian Thorne. Reward: 20 impression points, along with unlocking heightened sensitivity in the ears.]

Lucien fell entirely silent for a moment. Then he tossed his jacket onto the bed and slumped heavily into the chair.

"You truly are a piece of trash system."

[Thank you for the compliment.] 000 replied nonchalantly: [But I see that you already have a plan to approach him anyway. This mission is simply pushing the boat along with the current. What do you have to complain about?]

"It is completely different." Lucien said, his voice terribly blunt: "Approaching him so he notices my capability is one thing. Physically touching him is another matter entirely. What do you take me for? An intern who just got demoted, suddenly going out of his way to touch the CEO. Does that not sound completely insane?"

[It sounds rather interesting to me.] 000 chuckled: [And hey, you have exactly seven days. If you do not complete it, your impression points will be deducted. And as you already know, having low impression points means your access to certain system support functions will be restricted. I do not want to make things difficult for you, but rules are rules.]

"I think it holds no real value anyway, did you even have this godforsaken feature in the previous world? You do nothing but cause trouble."

[I already told you that was just a draft world. Do your best, I will show you just how excellent the system can be.]

Lucien let out a long, drawn-out breath: "You always find a way to make everything so much worse, do you not?"

[I will take that as a compliment.]

He did not even bother to reply. Instead, he leaned back into the chair, closed his eyes, and began to think deeply. Damian Thorne was not the kind of person who was easily approachable. Yesterday in the corridor, Damian had looked at him exactly once, said exactly one word, and then brushed past like a gust of wind. To touch the man without making him angry or suspicious, Lucien needed a perfectly natural situation. An accidental collision. A minor mishap out in the hallway.

"You said on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, he comes down to the seventh floor for meetings." Lucien opened his eyes and looked at 000: "What time is the meeting?"

[Ten in the morning. He usually comes down from the elevator, walks across the main corridor, and enters meeting room number two. That hallway is quite narrow, and in the morning, it is bustling with people coming and going. That is your perfect opportunity.]

"Ten o’clock in the morning. The main corridor." Lucien muttered to himself, then stood up, walked over to the desk, and opened the laptop. He did not look up any additional information, he simply opened a blank document and began to redraw the blueprint of the seventh-floor corridor entirely from memory. The exact location of the elevators, the position of meeting room number two, the placement of the photocopier, and the location of the pantry. Every single detail was sketched out through rapid and precise strokes.

000 flew closer, staring intently at the monitor: [Are you drawing a tactical battle map right now?]

"I am calculating where I should stand so that it looks like the most accidental collision possible." Lucien replied, his hands never ceasing their drawing: "If I stand too close to the elevator, it will look completely intentional. If I stand too close to the meeting room, Damian will think I am deliberately waiting for him. It has to be a location where an ordinary intern could plausibly be present."

[Such as?]

"Such as right in front of the photocopier. Or right in front of the pantry. No one would find it strange for an intern to be photocopying documents or brewing coffee." He paused his pen, staring at the diagram for a moment: "Tomorrow, I will time it perfectly. At exactly nine fifty, I will head out to the photocopier, holding a stack of documents. When he walks by, I will pretend not to notice and bump into Damian. The documents will fall, I will bend down to pick them up, and conveniently touch his hand when he reaches down to help. Done."

[That sounds incredibly simple. But what if he does not bend down to help you?]

"Then I will simply touch him myself while picking up the documents. One way or another, there is always a method."
