Chapter 131: Chapter 131: Lingering Suspicions

Lucien sat in his chair for a long time, his mind still spinning from the recent collision. His left shoulder still throbbed with a dull ache. He reached up to rub it, secretly thinking that if he ever had to pull off these kinds of stunts again, he would definitely have to choose a safer angle to stand. Damian Thorne moved as fast as the wind, and his body was as solid as a rock; crashing into him felt like being sideswiped by a truck.

The monitor was clearly lit up with the unfinished poster sketch file, but Lucien’s mind was preoccupied with other matters.

"Are you sure it was not on purpose?"

That question still echoed in his head. The first world had gone so smoothly, making Lucien think that every male lead would be like that, but it seemed that was not the case. But why would Damian, having been suspicious from the very beginning, still bend down to help him pick up the documents, and even give him an opportunity to get closer?

"000." Lucien called out softly.

[What is it now?]

"I have a feeling this world is not going to be as easy as the last one."

000 chuckled, [Of course. Each world has a different level of difficulty. Did you think the system sent you here for a vacation?]

"I just wish you could stay quiet for a moment."

[Hey! You were the one who called me first.]

Lucien shook his head. He was about to refocus on his work when a silhouette appeared at the door of the design room. He did not even need to look up to know who it was. The slow footsteps, deliberately making just enough noise to catch people’s attention, could only belong to Ethan Lee.

Sure enough, Ethan headed straight for Lucien’s desk. Today, Ethan wore a light blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, making him look busy and professional. However, his eyes could not hide a poorly suppressed curiosity.

"Lucien, what were you doing out in the hallway this morning?" Ethan asked. His tone was as friendly as ever, but Lucien immediately detected a probing undertone hidden beneath it.

Lucien looked up, his expression as innocent as humanly possible: "I was making copies of some documents for Sarah. Unfortunately, I tripped on my way back and dropped all the papers all over the floor."

"I thought I saw you bump into someone. It was Damian, right?" Ethan pulled over a nearby chair and sat down next to Lucien’s desk, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret: "Are you alright? Damian is notoriously strict, so I was worried you might get scolded."

Lucien shook his head and offered a faint smile: "I am perfectly fine. Damian did not scold me; I just dropped the documents."

"You just dropped the documents?" Ethan raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced: "I saw the two of you talking for a while. Besides, Damian rarely stops to chat with anyone. You are quite lucky."

Lucien sensed the bait in Ethan’s words. If it had been the original owner of this body, he might have eagerly blurted out everything, proud to have caught the boss’s attention. But Lucien would do no such thing.

"I guess it was just because I dropped the papers right in front of him, so he had to stop." Lucien replied, his voice remaining even as his hands returned to the drawing on the screen: "Furthermore, Damian only reminded me to be more careful. He was probably annoyed that I bumped into him."

Ethan fell silent for a moment, his eyes still glued to Lucien as if trying to find some anomaly. Then, Ethan burst into laughter and patted Lucien lightly on the shoulder: "Yeah, that is good to hear. I was just worried you might be in trouble. By the way, your work performance seems much better lately."

"Thank you. You have been assigning me so many tasks that I can barely handle them all. I really had to push myself to finish on time; I hope everything is to your satisfaction."

"You are too modest." Ethan smiled, but the smile did not reach his eyes. He withdrew his hand and stood up: "Alright, you get back to work. I will not bother you any longer. Let me know if you run into any difficulties."

"Thank you."

Ethan turned around and walked away, but after taking only a few steps, he suddenly stopped and looked back at Lucien one more time: "Oh, did you know that Damian usually comes down to the seventh floor for meetings on Tuesday and Thursday mornings? Be a bit more careful when you walk around next time, and do not bump into him again. He is not always as easygoing as he was today."

Having said that, Ethan walked straight off without looking back. Lucien watched his retreating figure, his palms clenching slightly.

[Warning: Ethan Lee has begun to suspect you. Please proceed with caution.] 000’s voice rang out in Lucien’s mind, completely devoid of its usual mocking tone and entirely serious this time.

"I know." Lucien replied softly: "He is not just suspicious. He just deliberately let me know that he saw everything. That last sentence, ’do not bump into him again,’ was a direct warning."

[What do you think he will do next?]

"I am not sure yet. But he will definitely be keeping a closer eye on me. And that also means my upcoming plans are going to be much harder to execute."

[So, are you going to give up?]

"Give up?" Lucien let out a soft laugh: "Are you kidding me? I already wasted ten years in the previous world. I do not plan on wasting another decade in this one. If Ethan wants to play games, I will play along until the bitter end. I just need to be a little more careful now, that is all."

Lucien turned back to his monitor and resumed working on the poster sketch. But this time, his mind was occupied by more than just lines and colors. He was thinking about Ethan, about the look in Ethan’s eyes just a moment ago, and about the way Ethan had deliberately emphasized that Damian was not always easygoing.

It was blindingly obvious that Ethan did not want Lucien getting close to Damian. And that realization only made Lucien more certain of one thing: getting close to Damian was the absolute fastest route to escaping this miserable intern position.

Around noon, Lucien was about to head to the pantry to brew some coffee when Mark appeared at his desk. Mark stood there clutching a small notebook, his expression just as hesitant as usual.

"Lucien, I saw you bump into Damian this morning." Mark said, his voice dropped so low that only the two of them could hear: "Are you okay?"

Lucien looked at Mark, noticing that the look in Mark’s eyes held none of Ethan’s curiosity or probing, but rather a hint of genuine concern. Lucien smiled gently: "I am fine, I just dropped some documents."

"That is good." Mark nodded, then handed the notebook over to Lucien: "These are my new notes on the updated features in Illustrator. There are a few parts I just tested out yesterday, and they seem highly effective. You should take a look."

"Thank you." Lucien accepted the notebook and flipped through a few pages. Inside were the same meticulous notes as always, with every single step carefully written out by hand.

"I think this is brilliant. It is a real shame that everyone else does not get to see this. Are you absolutely certain you do not want to share it with them?"

Mark shook his head: "I do not want to draw any attention to myself. Besides, if Ethan found out I had these notes, he would probably find a way to take them away or tell me to focus on other tasks. I just want to work in peace."

Lucien fell silent for a moment. Then, he closed the notebook and looked straight into Mark’s eyes: "Do you really think keeping your head down like this forever is going to work out fine? Ethan has been suppressing you for months now. If you do nothing, he will just keep walking all over you, right up until you have no value left, at which point he will throw you away like a piece of scrap paper."

Mark startled slightly, then bowed his head: "I know. But I do not know what else to do. I am not good at office politics like Ethan is."

"You do not need to be good at any of that." Lucien replied: "You only need to be good at your professional skills. As for everything else, just leave it to me."

Mark looked up, gazing at Lucien with a bewildered expression: "What do you mean?"

"What I mean is that I currently have a plan in motion. This is not about seeking petty revenge against Ethan, but rather about demonstrating our genuine capabilities. It is to make this entire company, Damian included, bear witness to what we can truly accomplish. This will not be an endeavor for me to undertake alone, but rather a joint effort where both you and I will stand together to expose to them the absolute rottenness that has taken root within this design department."
