Chapter 133: Chapter 133: The Thirty-Centimeter Mission

After working for a while, Lucien set his laptop aside and collapsed onto the bed. Spending the entire day at the office wracking his brain to deal with those people seemed to have completely drained all of his energy. The small room was dead silent, save for the low hum of the air conditioner and the flapping sound of 000’s wings hovering somewhere in the air. He was just about to close his eyes and rest for a moment when 000’s voice rang out again, this time carrying a suspiciously gleeful tone.

[Host, I have a new mission for you.]

Lucien sighed heavily. "Another mission? I just finished one this morning."

[Well, missions are supposed to be back-to-back. Did you think the system would give you free time to fool around?] 000 chuckled, then read aloud in its shrill voice: [Special Mission: Within three days, stand close to Damian Thorne in an elevator, at a distance of less than thirty centimeters, and maintain this proximity for at least ten seconds. Reward: 30 Charm Points.]

"I feel like this time around, you just keep churning out a bunch of reward points and stuff, but I have not truly seen their value yet." Lucien rolled over. "And you are forcing me to stand within thirty centimeters of Damian? You are out of your mind. Did you not see how suspicious he was of me this morning? He might just throw me out of the elevator."

[Just calm down, that distance is not even considered too close. You can just pretend to bump into him and fall into his arms for a bit, right?]

"You need to stop watching those trashy office romance dramas."

[Just take advantage of the situation. Elevators are cramped anyway, so no one will notice if you stand a little close to each other.]

"The elevators at the company are incredibly spacious, not cramped in the slightest. Do you think I do not know that?"

[Then you have to create the situation yourself. That is exactly why I gave you this mission. If everything were too easy, it would not be a challenge anymore.] 000 replied, its voice as innocent as if it had just stated an obvious fact.

Lucien shook his head, not even bothering to argue anymore. He knew this system all too well; the more he argued, the more fired up it would get. It was probably just in a rush to gather enough energy to return home.

"Ten seconds of close contact in the elevator, huh. Then it does not necessarily have to be just me and Damian in there, right?"

[Of course, but it would be much better if it were just the two of you. By the way, are you actually going to do it? I thought you would put up a much fiercer fight.]

"If I put up a fight, would you cancel the mission?"

[No.]

"Then what is the point of wasting my breath arguing." Lucien replied, then followed up with a question: "Give me the information regarding the time Damian gets off work."

[Damian Thorne usually gets off work quite late, around 7 to 8 PM. He does not share the elevator with the regular employees; instead, he uses a private elevator at the end of the seventh-floor hallway, near his office. That elevator goes straight down to the basement where he parks his car. Usually, he leaves his office at around 7:30 PM.]

"A private elevator." Lucien furrowed his brows. "Then I have even less of a reason to go in there with him."

[Exactly. However, that elevator is not exclusively reserved for the general manager. It is a shared elevator for the area at the end of the hallway, near meeting room number two. Any employee is allowed to use it, but because it is located in a somewhat secluded spot, very few people actually use it, especially at the end of the day.]

Lucien remained silent for a moment, and then the corners of his lips curled upward. "So, if I work overtime, then leave at exactly 7:30 PM, and use that specific elevator, it is entirely possible to accidentally bump into Damian."

[That is completely logical. You only need an excuse to stay late at the company. And for an intern who is piled high with a mountain of trivial chores like you, working overtime is a perfectly normal occurrence.]

"Yeah. That will work."

For the next two days, Lucien did not rush into action. He knew that if he acted immediately, Ethan would become even more suspicious. Lucien needed to let things settle down for a bit, to make Ethan think that the collision the other day was merely a random accident. It was also to give himself time to perfect the poster design, something he was pouring a great deal of heart and soul into.

Throughout those two days, Lucien continued to do the trivial tasks assigned to him; he still brewed coffee for Howard, and he still answered Ethan using the obedient tone of a harmless intern. But while working, Lucien’s eyes were secretly observing everything. He noticed that Ethan would occasionally glance over at his desk, but Ethan did not take any further action. It seemed that after their conversation the other day, Ethan had yet to temporarily find any suspicious points to nitpick.

Mark, on the other hand, would give a slight nod in greeting every time he walked past Lucien’s desk, occasionally handing over a few new pages of notes. Lucien realized that Mark had started to open up a bit more, even though Mark still maintained a reserved attitude toward everyone else in the room.

On the third day, which was also the deadline for the mission, Lucien decided to make his move. For that entire day, he deliberately slowed down his working pace a little, so that by the end of the shift, there would still be a few unfinished tasks remaining. When the clock struck five, everyone started to leave one by one, yet Lucien remained seated at his desk, his eyes glued to the monitor, his hands typing steadily on the keyboard.

Sarah walked past and looked at him with full sympathy. "Working overtime again? Do not stay too late; go home early and get some rest."

"Yes, I will just finish up a few things and head home right away." Lucien smiled gently.

Ethan also walked past, but he merely cast a glance at Lucien before walking straight ahead without saying a word. Perhaps Ethan thought that a lowly intern working overtime was nothing worth paying attention to.

By around 7 PM, the office was virtually empty. The yellow lights from the ceiling were still on, but the atmosphere had sunk into complete silence. Lucien shut down his computer, stood up, and gave a long stretch. His joints popped and cracked after sitting in one place for the entire day.

[Hey, it is 7:25 PM already.] 000 reminded him. [Get ready, he is about to come out.]

"I know." Lucien slung his bag over his shoulder and stepped out of the design room. The seventh-floor hallway was completely deserted; only the sound of his shoes echoed across the tiled floor. He did not head toward the main elevators that everyone normally used, but instead turned toward the end of the hallway, where the elevator 000 had mentioned was located.

As soon as he arrived, he saw a tall silhouette waiting in front of the elevator doors.

It was Damian Thorne.

Today, Damian was not wearing his suit jacket; he was left only with a white dress shirt underneath, the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, his tie having been taken off at some unknown point. His black hair was still slicked back neatly, but his posture appeared much more exhausted than it had during the day. One of his hands held a briefcase, while the other was scrolling through his phone.

Lucien took a deep breath, then stepped forward, standing about a meter away from Damian, and also looked up at the floor indicator panel of the elevator, acting just like any normal employee waiting to go home.

The man cast a fleeting glance over at Lucien before looking away, seemingly paying him no mind.

A crisp ding rang out, and the elevator doors slid open. Damian stepped inside first, and Lucien followed closely behind.

After all, it was a shared elevator meant for employees, so it was quite spacious, and with only two people inside, the space felt even emptier. Damian stood near the middle area of the elevator, one hand tucked into his trouser pocket, while the other held his phone, his eyes glued to the screen. Lucien stepped in, reflexively intending to stand close to the corner to maintain his distance. But then, he remembered his true objective.

Ah, this goddamn mission.

He had never seen any system issue a list of missions as utterly ridiculous as 000’s.

Lucien muttered curses at his system under his breath while taking a deep inhale, then took soft steps toward the control panel, deliberately choosing a spot that was not too far away from Damian. It was so close that Lucien could smell the faint scent of Damian’s cologne, a gentle, soothing aroma of deep wood that was not overwhelmingly strong.

The elevator doors closed tight, and the confined space suddenly became strangely silent. The only sounds left were the low hum of the elevator’s machinery and the steady breathing of the two men.

Lucien stood there, his eyes staring fixedly at the floor numbers ticking downward. His heart beat just a fraction faster.

It was true that Lucien was feeling nervous, but it was not out of fear that Damian would throw him out of the elevator; rather, he was afraid that the elevator’s travel time would not last the full thirty seconds, causing his mission to completely fail.
