Chapter 137: Chapter 137: The Coffee Incident

The next morning, Lucien walked into the design room, looking much more unkempt than usual. He had returned home late yesterday, and then spent a long time tinkering with his designs and contemplating his future before finally going to bed. Therefore, dark circles were clearly visible under Lucien’s eyes this morning, and his entire body lacked vitality.

The people in the office saw him but only cast an extra glance before moving on. Lucien did not expect them to care about him anyway. At present, he had no energy left to interact with them. Right at this moment, 000’s voice rang out in Lucien’s mind, brimming with gleeful excitement: [Hey host, I have a new mission for you.]

Lucien let out a long sigh, placed his bag on the desk, and pulled out his chair to sit down: "Can you just leave me in peace for one morning? Yesterday I stayed at the office until ten at night, and when I got home I still had to finish tweaking the color palette. This morning, my eyes are still glued shut."

[Missions just arrive as they will; what right do I have to delay them?] 000 replied, its tone as innocent as always: [Listen closely: Within two days, you must create a situation that causes Damian Thorne to initiate physical contact with you. It can be accidental or intentional, as long as there is skin-to-skin contact. Reward: 20 Impression Points.]

Lucien paused his hand as he was reaching for the mouse, looking up at the chubby water droplet flapping its wings vigorously in mid-air: "Are you out of your mind? I just managed to leave an impression on him with my competence last night, and now you want me to go back to pulling ridiculous stunts like bumping into him or spilling water on him? He has only just begun to respect me, and you want me to ruin it with my own two hands?"

[Who said you had to pull clumsy tricks like last time? I said you need to create a situation where he touches you. I did not tell you to pretend to fall into his embrace. You can surely think of a more subtle method. For example... handing him something and letting your hands brush against each other.]

Lucien fell silent for a moment. It was true that last time, after the collision in the hallway, Damian had become suspicious of him immediately. If he repeated those clumsy tricks this time, Damian might assume he was deliberately trying to get close, and all the good impressions from last night would vanish into thin air. He needed a different, much more natural approach.

Then, an idea flashed through his mind as he looked at his own half-finished cup of coffee. Yes, coffee! Damian had a standing meeting schedule on the seventh floor, and during those times, the man would stop by the pantry for a moment to brew himself a cup of black coffee. That was a habit Lucien had observed over the past few days while he intentionally paid attention to Damian’s schedule.

What if he stood waiting in the pantry at that exact time, brewed a cup of coffee for the man in advance, and then, while handing the cup over, allowed a slight collision of their fingertips to occur? It would simply be an accidental touch while passing a cup of coffee. There would be absolutely nothing suspicious about it.

"What do you think about me brewing coffee for the director of my department, and then conveniently brewing one for him as well? Would that seem too artificial or overly obvious?"

[That should probably work... I am not entirely certain, but either way, he is going to think you are deliberately finding a way to approach him.]

Lucien shot 000 a sideways glare but said nothing. As it happened, today was the day of Damian’s scheduled meeting. Lucien cast a quick glance at the clock. There was only about half an hour left, so he stood up and headed toward the pantry.

The pantry was quite deserted in the morning, only a few people came in to grab some water and left immediately. Lucien opened the cabinet and retrieved the box of ground coffee that he knew Damian always used, a type of pure black coffee, with no sugar and no milk, kept separately on the top shelf. He also took out a clean white ceramic mug, the exact type of mug Damian usually used every time he came down here.

The coffee machine whirred steadily, and the fragrant, bitter aroma of black coffee permeated the small kitchen. Lucien stood waiting, his eyes occasionally darting toward the pantry door to keep track of the time.

He deliberately brewed the cup of coffee slightly hotter than usual. It was not hot enough to scald one’s hands, but it was just enough that upon grasping it, a person would be slightly startled and forced to shift their grip or find a way to support the bottom of the cup.

The coffee machine let out a sharp click, signaling that it was done. Lucien picked up the cup of coffee, feeling the intense heat radiating through the thin ceramic. He stepped out of the pantry, carrying the mug in his hands, and walked toward meeting room number two.

And exactly as expected, Damian Thorne had just stepped out of the elevator.

Today, Damian was wearing a pitch-black suit with his tie neatly knotted, his hair slicked back immaculately just like every other day. His footsteps were brisk and decisive, but upon seeing Lucien standing in the hallway, holding a steaming cup of coffee, the man paused for a fraction of a second.

"Good morning, sir." Lucien gave a slight bow, then offered the cup of coffee: "I saw that you were about to go into a meeting, so I prepared a cup of coffee for you in advance."

Damian looked at the coffee cup, then shifted his gaze back to Lucien: "Do you even know what kind I drink to be brewing it?"

"Yes, black coffee, no sugar, no milk. I noticed you frequently drink this type every time you come down for a meeting."

Damian remained silent for a moment. Then, he reached his hand out to accept the cup.

And that was the exact moment Lucien had been waiting for. He extended the cup toward the man, but deliberately let his hands tremble slightly, just enough for the coffee mug to tilt at a small angle, causing a few drops of scalding hot coffee to spill over and run down the side of the cup.

"It is so hot..." Lucien let out a soft gasp, his hands jerking slightly.

Out of reflex, Damian reached out with his other hand to support the bottom of the cup, his fingers brushing against Lucien’s fingers.

Their skin made contact very briefly, the man’s fingers were much larger than Lucien’s own, perfectly grazing across the back of Lucien’s hand, helping him steady the tilting cup of coffee. That moment lasted for less than two seconds, yet it was completely enough for Lucien to feel the warmth from Damian’s hand transmitting through his skin.

"I am so sorry!" Lucien hurriedly pulled his hands back, his face bowing slightly, his voice brimming with apologetic remorse: "The cup was too hot, I could not hold it steadily..."

Damian said nothing. He held the coffee cup in his hands, his gaze sweeping over his own fingers before looking back up at Lucien’s face. Within those deep eyes, Lucien did not see the annoyance or suspicion from last time. It was merely a flash of incomprehension that flitted past, and then vanished.

"Be more careful." Damian said, his voice remaining deep and cold, but it carried no hint of reprimand.

"Yes, I understand."

Damian held the cup of coffee and stepped into the meeting room. The door closed shut behind him.

Lucien stood there for a moment, then turned his back and walked toward the design room. He let out a very faint breath, considering it a sigh of relief for having successfully completed the mission.

[You completed the mission really early, but hey, do you not feel that this was excessively obvious?] 000 asked a question, then followed the standard procedure to notify him: [Congratulations host on completing the third side mission. Twenty Impression Points have been added to your personal skill point board. The overall personal board is currently updating; host will be able to check it later.]

Hearing the barrage of words that 000 spouted out, Lucien could not help but frown: "Is your system still not fully set up?"

[...It is still organizing.] 000’s voice suddenly became slightly staticky: [There are a few settings that will be different from the other departments, so it is currently adjusting for you. Rest assured, it will definitely be sorted out quickly for you.]

"What do I have to worry about? In the previous world, you guys had absolutely nothing, and even though it was as tangled as a mess of steel wool, I was still able to handle it."

000 was silenced by his words, and only after a long while did it slowly try to change the subject: [By the way, did you see that? This time he did not suspect you like he did before. He even looked at his own hand after touching you. It seems that the Impression Points and Charm Points are starting to take effect.]

"I do not care." Lucien replied, but deep down, he knew that 000 was right. Damian no longer looked at him with the guarded gaze from their very first encounter. Perhaps it was because, last night, Damian had witnessed his true capabilities. And this time around, Lucien did not do anything remotely suspicious. He was merely a thoughtful intern who accidentally spilled a little coffee because the cup was too hot. No one could possibly fault him for that.

However, the moment he returned to his desk, Lucien suddenly felt a pair of eyes watching him.
