Chapter 138: Chapter 138: Under Watchful Eyes

It was unclear how long Ethan Lee had been standing there, but by the time Lucien noticed him, the man was already lingering at the door of the design department, holding a stack of documents in his hand. But of course, Ethan was not focused on those documents at all; his gaze was fixed intently in Lucien’s direction.

Lucien could not clearly discern the emotions hidden within those eyes, as they were separated by quite a distance anyway. He only felt that Ethan Lee stared at him for a very long time before Ethan finally turned his head and walked back to his own desk.

[It looks like he has already seen your actions,] 000 whispered: [The system side has not yet finished developing the affection and favorability evaluation system between you and the other characters in this world. But just looking at it is enough to understand; if that system existed, Ethan Lee’s number for you would definitely be in the negatives.]

"I know, he has never liked me anyway. Have you forgotten how last time I merely bumped into Damian by accident outside the door, and Ethan already came to warn me?"

Lucien strolled back to his desk at a leisurely pace, watching 000 flutter its wings from left to right, and smacked his lips: "Just let it be. He has already seen it anyway, so there is no way to hide it even if I wanted to. If Ethan wants to pick a fight with me, let him. If I manage to catch Damian, Ethan will not have a peaceful time with me either. Besides, I did not do anything wrong, did I? I am simply showing concern for a superior. Do I not have to brew coffee for the design department director every single day? So what is the problem with brewing an extra cup for Damian now? Is there any rule stating that an intern cannot make coffee for the CEO?"

[It is true that there is no such rule, and you did not do anything wrong either. But since he already dislikes you, he will still find a way to cause trouble.]

"Well, he is inherently already picking on me, isn’t he? Have you not noticed that the entire concept for the new collection has been tossed to me? If we can no longer pretend, then we might as well face off directly. To me, Ethan looks like he has lost his composure a bit, which is all the better. The more he loses his temper, the easier it is for him to make mistakes."

Lucien let out a breath, then opened his fashion concept file and resumed working. It was just that his mind was somewhat absent right now; partly due to a lack of sleep, so he was not fully focused.

Suddenly, the feeling of Damian supporting his hand sprang to Lucien’s mind. Feeling irritable, Lucien ruffled his hair into a mess and muttered curses at 000: "You are truly a useless system, giving out such pointless missions all day long."

[I can hear you scolding me, you know,] 000 replied: [But you cannot bash the missions we give out either. This world is different from the first one; without those opening missions, how could you possibly seduce Damian? Do not tell me you were planning to do what you did before, stripping yourself naked and climbing into his bed? You would be dragged out by the security guards he calls.]

"I know, there is no need for you to repeat it. But do you not think those missions feel incredibly forced and fake?"

[That is because your method of execution was too rushed. You deliberately acted in a way to show Damian that you were purposely trying to approach him, didn’t you?]

Hearing 000 say that, Lucien could not help but raise an eyebrow: "You actually realized that? You are not too stupid after all."

[Do not personally attack me. I am quite useful too, you know. Have you not noticed that thanks to my missions, Damian Thorne has started to pay attention to you, not just because of your competence, but for other things as well?]

"What other things?"

[For example, the scent on your body. For instance, the sensation of touching your hand. Or the way you bow your head when apologizing. All of those little things are gradually building an impression in Damian’s mind. An impression that is not merely the competent intern, but rather the intern who has something very captivating about him.]

Lucien fell silent; he did not want to admit it, but 000’s words made sense. In the first world, Dominic Vance was drawn to Lucien because of lust, obsession, and possessiveness. But Damian was different. He was more rational, harder to approach, and not easily swayed by clumsy tricks or blatant seduction. The only way to get close to Damian was to combine genuine capability with tiny, subtle emotional ripples, bit by bit, like water droplets slowly dripping into his heart.

"By the way, how many points do I currently have?" he asked.

[Impression points: 45. Attraction points: 30. The total is 75 points. It is already quite a decent amount.]

"Yet you said that even with 100 points, it is not a guarantee to get into his bed. How many more missions do I have to complete?"

[Just take your time. There might not even be a need to reach 100 points. Every male lead is different, after all. Besides, you currently have the advantage that Damian has started taking notice of your abilities. If you execute that fashion concept well, your impression points could skyrocket.]

Lucien nodded, then focused on the screen once again. Swaths of earthy brown, burnt orange, and moss green gradually materialized under his fingertips. He meticulously adjusted every minor detail, from the font and layout to the color palette. This project was not merely an opportunity to prove his competence, but it was also a golden ticket for him to step closer to Damian Thorne. He absolutely could not afford to ruin it.

When noon arrived, Sarah dropped by his desk and set down a lunchbox. "I bought an extra one. Eat up, and do not skip meals like you did the other day."

Lucien looked up and offered a soft smile. "Yes, thank you."

Sarah glanced at his computer screen and, seeing the concept board gradually taking shape, widened her eyes in astonishment. "Did you... make this all by yourself? The fashion concept?"

"Yes, I did. Ethan assigned it to me."

Sarah stayed silent for a moment before shaking her head. "I really do not know if I should say Ethan is being completely unreasonable, or if I should praise you for being so talented. But you did a truly beautiful job on this. I have worked here for a few years, and I have never seen an intern pull off something like this."

Lucien just smiled, not saying anything more. But deep within his heart, his belief in himself grew just a little bit stronger.

The afternoon passed by in tranquility. Ethan did not appear again, but Lucien could still sense the man’s gaze sweeping over his desk from time to time. He ignored it, choosing to press on with his work.

When it was time to clock out, he stayed behind once again, continuing to refine the concept draft. However, this time, he did not remain until ten o’clock like yesterday. He knew that Damian might walk by again, and he did not want to look as if he were deliberately waiting for the man. At around eight in the evening, he shut down his computer, packed his belongings, and headed home.

On the way to the bus stop, his phone buzzed. It was a text message from Mark.

"Did you see Ethan today? He seemed awfully irritable. He hasn’t spoken a single word to anyone all day long."

Lucien typed back: "He is probably just busy. It is nothing to worry about."

But he knew the real reason all too well. Ethan had seen him handing the coffee to Damian. And the man was not pleased about that in the slightest.

Upon returning to his apartment, Lucien brewed himself a cup of coffee and then pulled his laptop over to the beanbag chair next to his small table. There were only three days left until the deadline, and he needed to finish it flawlessly. Furthermore, judging by Ethan Lee’s demeanor today, the man would probably find an abundance of faults to pick with this design draft by the end of the week.

If he did not prepare thoroughly, he feared it would be difficult to pass. Even though Damian had also mentioned that he could submit the concept directly to him, Lucien did not plan to reveal this to Ethan just yet. He would still report to Ethan as usual; he wanted to see just how treacherous and double-crossing this person could truly be.

He refused to believe that Ethan would have the audacity to simply take the entire concept he had worked on, submit it, and boldly claim it as his own.
