Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Borrowed Credit (2)

Lucien watched his retreating figure, the faint smile on his lips still unextinguished. He leaned down, picked up the stack of documents on the table, flipped through a few pages, and then set them back down.

"Alright then...." He whispered: "Keep being confident. The more confident you are, the easier you will stumble and fall."

Returning to his desk, Lucien saw that Mark was already standing there waiting for him. The young man appeared incredibly restless, his hands anxiously fiddling with his familiar small notebook. Seeing Lucien return, Mark hurriedly pulled him over to a secluded corner near the pantry.

"I just saw the concept that Ethan submitted." Mark said, his voice dropped so low as if he were terrified someone might overhear: "That is your work, is it not? I recognized the composition and the core ideas. It belongs to you. So why is Ethan’s name on it? Why didn’t you say anything?"

Lucien looked at Mark, seeing the genuine, burning injustice within the young man’s eyes. He smiled gently and shook his head: "There is nothing to be angry about. We just need to wait for the right moment."

"But... you worked so exhaustingly hard for days on end, staying late into the night, only for someone else to reap all the rewards of your labor. Do you not find that incredibly unfair?" Mark asked, his voice brimming with total bewilderment.

"It is certainly unfair." Lucien replied, his tone remaining perfectly calm and indifferent: "But I already anticipated this happening. I deliberately sent the file to Ethan."

Mark blinked, his expression becoming even more bewildered: "You did it on purpose? But why?"

"Because I wanted to see exactly how far he would go. And because I wanted undeniable proof." Lucien pulled out his phone and opened the email he had sent to Ethan that morning: "Right here, the email sending the original file to Ethan, with the file attached, complete with a timestamp. Inside my original file, there is even the full edit history, every single layer, every single stroke, every single save state. No one can possibly deny it."

Mark looked at the phone, then back at Lucien. The look in his eyes gradually began to shift, changing from bewilderment to something resembling deep admiration: "So you were prepared for this from the very beginning. Are you planning to expose him?"

"Now is not the time." Lucien slipped the phone back into his pocket: "I will not expose him right now. I will wait until Ethan becomes overly confident in himself, wait for Howard to praise him a few more times, wait for absolutely everyone in the department to fully believe that it is his masterpiece. And then, at the most opportune moment, I will let everyone know the truth."

"But when that time comes, will anyone actually believe you?" Mark asked with a worried tone: "Ethan has a solid relationship with Howard, while you are nothing more than an intern."

"I do not need Howard to believe me." Lucien replied: "I only need one single person to believe me. Someone who holds far more power than Howard."

Mark remained silent for a moment. Then, his eyes widened in sheer realization: "You mean... Damian?"

Lucien did not answer, merely curling his lips into a slight smirk. But that was more than enough for Mark to understand.

"I understand now." Mark nodded, his voice lowering to a whisper: "But you absolutely must be careful. Ethan is not someone who is easy to deal with. If he discovers that you are planning something, he will find a way to crush you first."

"I know. Thank you for worrying about me." Lucien patted Mark lightly on the shoulder: "But I am not afraid of him. I have prepared enough. Now let’s head back to our desks, before someone sees us talking together for too long."

Mark nodded, then returned to his own desk. Lucien also headed back to his seat, turned on his computer, and continued with his daily trivial chores. But inside his mind, the plan had been meticulously mapped out, clearer than it had ever been before.

In the afternoon, Lucien took advantage of his break time to double-check all the evidence he had carefully stored away. The original file with all of its layers and complete edit history. The email sent to Ethan with a clear, indisputable timestamp. The cloud backup displaying the exact date and time the file was created. Absolutely everything was neatly organized in a separate, dedicated folder, fully prepared for the day it would be needed.

000 hovered in mid-air right beside him, watching him work. It tilted its head, well, given that its current form lacked any physical separation between a head and a body, the entire water droplet-shaped body simply tilted along with it.

But 000 did not really care; mostly, it just felt as though it had begun to somewhat understand the real reason why Lucien was the one chosen to be brought here. But...

[Your ability to remain calm is truly impressive; any normal person would have already jumped up in anger, and it would be a long time before they would be willing to yield like this.]

"Getting into a physical fight will not solve anything." Lucien replied: "To be entirely honest, every world is exactly the same; whoever is favored is the one who wins. Sometimes, having evidence is merely a necessary step toward legitimizing everything."

[But did Damian not explicitly tell you to send it straight to him? Now that you sent the concept to Ethan, and he has already submitted it to Howard, it will not be long before it gets pushed all the way up to the management board. How do you plan to handle the situation when that happens?]

"Well, I will still send it to Damian, of course; that is the absolute best piece of evidence to prove that the copyright of this work belongs solely to me. But I am not in a rush. I will wait until Howard officially approves the concept that Ethan altered, and only then will I send the original version to Damian. Attached to the email will be absolutely all the evidence proving that Ethan stole and modified my work."

[That sounds incredibly risky. What if Damian does not believe you?]

"He was the one who saw my very first preliminary sketch, so he will understand exactly why those specific color tones were used. I have a feeling that part of the reason Damian paid attention to this collection was precisely because of those color tones, and Ethan is currently destroying them. He has a very keen eye; you can rest assured about that."

000 remained completely silent, before finally letting out a long sigh: [Sending you to the 18+ route is truly a waste of exceptional talent; by all rights, you should be working for the main plotline route.]

"Thank you, but I do not want to be electrocuted for failing to complete a mission."

[You would not be. With a brilliant mind that can remain completely calm and meticulously map out a plan even when someone else steals your credit, I think those main plotline missions would be absolutely nothing to you.]

"Thank you, but I refuse. Furthermore, I do not consider this to be stealing credit at all." Lucien broke into a wide smile: "To me, this is simply me lending someone my credit; naturally, they will have to pay it back to me with interest."
