Chapter 141: Chapter 141: The Waiting Game

After work, Lucien packed his belongings, intending to head home early to get some rest. However, as he walked past meeting room number two, he suddenly spotted Ethan standing there talking to Howard. The two of them were laughing and chatting happily, evidently on very intimate terms. Howard patted Ethan on the shoulder, his voice booming so loudly that even through the closed doors, Lucien could still hear him: "Great job, you are truly the pillar of the design department. I will recommend a salary increase for you to the higher-ups during this year-end performance review.".

Ethan smiled brightly, bowing his head to thank Howard. At this moment, Ethan’s gaze happened to drift toward the corridor, catching sight of Lucien walking by. Consequently, the smile on Ethan’s lips widened even further, as if he were savoring the taste of victory and deliberately flaunting his triumph right in front of Lucien.

Unfortunately for Ethan, Lucien did not care much at all; he merely cast a single glance at Ethan Lee before walking straight ahead, passing right by the meeting room. Lucien showed absolutely no reaction, acting as though he had heard nothing and was simply passing through the area by pure coincidence.

That night after returning home, Lucien double-checked the evidence files he was holding onto, separating them into distinct folders systematically. Lucien also carefully sent an additional backup copy to another one of his own email addresses. This included absolutely everything, from the email that Ethan had sent, to the voice recording where Ethan explicitly told Lucien to send the files over to him.

Not a single thing was missing.

After finishing his inspection, Lucien opened his mailbox and composed a new email, the recipient obviously being Damian Thorne. Within the email, Lucien attached the original concept files, along with a standard message simply informing Damian that this was the original concept he had completed for the Autumn-Winter fashion project. Lucien wrote that he was sending it over for Damian to review in advance.

However, Lucien did not send it immediately; instead, he saved it in the drafts folder and then turned off the computer.

[Wait, why are you not sending it?]

000 spoke up right above his head, having somehow evolved from a winged water droplet into a water droplet with both wings and two tiny arms, though who knows who it learned that from. Those short, transparent arms mimicked a human posture by propping up its cheeks, asking Lucien in total confusion.

"It is not the right time yet; I still want to wait for them to grow fully complacent in their so-called victory."

"By the way, 000..."

[What is it?]

"Is this how people always act when they go to work?" Lucien had never actually worked a day in a corporate job before, nor had he truly experienced the harsh realities of life. He knew that human beings came in all shapes and forms, but regardless, Lucien had always been a deeply loved child.

Just how unimaginably deep and treacherous the human heart could be, Lucien had never genuinely understood.

[Sometimes it is even worse than this; you will get to experience it yourself when the opportunity arises. People always live for a certain purpose; there are those who simply want to live each day happily, and that is enough for them. Then there are those who are constantly obsessed with money, status, and the like... Terrified that without those things, they will spend their entire lives wallowing in the dark, muddy depths of society.]

Lucien remained silent for a moment before suddenly bursting into laughter: "You are being overly profound all of a sudden; I am not used to this at all.".

[That is because you asked me first. In truth, all novel worlds are constructed from a certain aspect of real society. Perhaps they are dramatized and exaggerated to an extreme degree. But they do not just appear like this out of nowhere.]

"Oh," Lucien replied dryly, clicking his tongue: "But I think I am finally ready to play this game of chess. Playing this endless cat-and-mouse game with Ethan is getting too annoying; I want to kick him completely out of this company.".

[Oh.] This time it was 000 who was surprised: [But isn’t that a bit too ambitious? Currently, Damian does not have enough interest in you to just let you run wild and cause chaos.]

"As long as I do the right thing, there is nothing to fear. Even if Damian does not tolerate me running wild, Damian certainly will not tolerate someone else destroying the company out of sheer jealousy and spite either. Besides, I possess something that Ethan does not have."

[Hm?]

"I am not afraid of anything, but Ethan is. Just like you said, Ethan lives while paying far too much attention to entirely too many things. Ethan is afraid of losing his position, afraid of losing his reputation, and utterly terrified of losing his spot beside Damian, even though Ethan has never even been able to touch that spot to begin with. Ethan fears way too many things, whereas I have absolutely nothing to lose. The worst-case scenario is death, and I am already dead anyway, am I not? There is truly nothing left to fear."

000 fell silent for a brief moment, then chuckled softly: [In that case... I wish you the best of luck with your plan.]

The next morning, Lucien woke up much earlier than usual. He had slept deeply and soundly without interruption following his midnight conversation with 000, and upon waking, Lucien felt his mind was incredibly light, completely unburdened by all those trivial matters. He stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the collar of his crisp white shirt, slipped on his leather shoes, and slung his bag over his shoulder. Today, Lucien no longer bore the disheveled appearance from the past few days, and the dark circles under his eyes had also faded considerably.

Upon arriving at the company, Lucien swiped his card, stepped into the elevator, and pressed the button for the seventh floor; everything proceeded just like any other normal day. It seemed that Ethan was quite satisfied with the glorious achievement Ethan had stolen from Lucien, so today Ethan did not even bother to pick a fight with him.

The design department was quiet in the morning; a few colleagues had already arrived and were currently bent over, engrossed in their computer screens. Sarah walked by, looking at Lucien with a gentle smile; she did not say a word, but her eyes appeared far more relieved upon seeing that Lucien was no longer as deathly pale as before.

As for Ethan, he was nowhere to be seen; perhaps Ethan was too busy basking in his grand victory after being praised by Howard in front of the entire meeting room. Lucien could not even bring himself to care. He returned to his seat, turned on his computer, and checked his emails. A perfectly normal workday officially began.

Around noon, Mark stopped by Lucien’s desk and placed a small notebook down. "I just updated a few new color trends. Take a look at them; who knows, they might be incredibly useful for your future projects."

Lucien accepted the notebook, flipped through a few pages, and then nodded. "Thank you. There are a few things in here that I actually need."

Mark stood there for a long moment, as if wanting to say something more, but eventually decided against it. Mark simply gave a slight nod before returning to his own desk. Lucien understood that Mark was still deeply worried about the entire situation with Ethan, but Lucien did not want to discuss it any further at this moment. Everything had to unfold precisely according to the proper sequence of events.

The afternoon passed by in peaceful silence. Lucien handled a few miscellaneous tasks that had been assigned to him, but his mind had already begun drifting toward the upcoming evening. He knew for a fact that Damian would be staying late for a meeting. Yesterday, while walking past meeting room number two, Lucien had clearly seen the meeting schedule written down: "Meeting with Frankfurt partners, 7PM - 9PM.".

Naturally, Lucien already had a flawlessly perfect plan laid out for tonight. After all, wasn’t the core mission of this world designed specifically to satisfy Damian?.

When all was said and done, Lucien still had to go through with seducing this man anyway.

When the workday ended, everyone gradually began to leave one after another. Sarah waved goodbye to him, and Ethan walked past with that same triumphant smile still proudly hanging on his lips, but Lucien merely bowed his head in a polite greeting before continuing to sit exactly where he was. He opened a brand new design file and started sketching out a few ideas for a personal project, casually working while he waited.

As time steadily slipped away, the design office became completely empty once again, growing so profoundly silent that one could clearly hear the low humming of the air conditioner running on the ceiling. Down at the very end of the corridor, the lights in meeting room number two were still shining brightly. Through the frosted glass, Lucien could vividly see Damian’s silhouette sitting at the head of the table; directly in front of him was a massive screen displaying the live image of a foreign business partner. Damian’s deep, low voice echoed outward, occasionally interspersed with polite, sociable laughter spoken in fluent English.
