Chapter 147: Chapter 147: The Next Day

The following day arrived much like any other, and Lucien made his way up to the company office with a jaunty step. To say he was skipping might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it was undeniably true that Lucien looked significantly more relaxed; his mood was no longer suppressed under a heavy weight as it had been over the past few days. Come to think of it, just yesterday he was still racking his brains over how to properly express himself in front of Damian, all while still agonizing over the words spoken by 000. However, right now, everything had become crystal clear; he just needed to straightforwardly showcase his true capabilities.

Indeed, occasionally being a little bit selfish truly posed no problem whatsoever.

Lucien swiped his card to enter the elevator and headed straight up to the seventh floor. As expected of a renowned national corporation, even though working hours had not yet officially begun, employees were already bustling back and forth. Lucien merely cast a brief glance before obediently heading straight toward his own desk. But the moment he stepped into the design department, before he even had the chance to set his backpack down, he immediately realized that there was something completely different about the atmosphere. Several colleagues were whispering and gossiping amongst themselves, their eyes glued to their computer monitors. Sarah, sitting at the adjacent desk, turned toward him and waved him over.

"Have you read the email yet?" Sarah asked, her voice dropping to a low whisper, acting exactly as if she were about to reveal some earth-shattering secret.

"What email, Sarah?"

"The email from Boss Damian. It was sent to the entire design department this morning. I have never seen the boss do anything like this before."

Lucien hastily turned on his computer and clicked into his inbox. Sure enough, there was a brand new email from Damian Thorne, sent early in the morning, bearing the subject line: "New Project Quality Control Procedure."

He opened it and read through it, his eyes quickly skimming over each line. Generally speaking, it was a notification adjusting the procedure for submitting drafts and approving projects within the design department; all submissions now had to be routed through a quality control division operating out of Damian’s private office.

Indeed, Damian Thorne possessed his own private office, complete with his own personal assistants and supervising secretaries. If Damian were to announce that all future projects must be handed over directly to him for approval, it might very well arouse the suspicion of certain individuals harboring malicious intents. But routing them through his office was a completely different matter altogether.

As Sarah had previously recounted to Lucien, this sort of thing had happened a few times in the past. Whenever it came to collections or seasonal designs that fell under the company’s core value system—projects deemed by the board of directors to possess significant influence—they were always subjected to prior review and approval by Damian’s office.

Hearing this news now, Lucien could not help but curl his lips into a faint smile.

On the surface, this was clearly an email implementing a procedural change in preparation for the company’s upcoming key project. But naturally, Lucien could clearly see that Damian was actively finding a way to fulfill the promise he had made the night before.

The young man lowered his head slightly, staring down at his pinkish fingertips, as if recalling the lingering warmth from the previous night when his hand had trailed across Damian’s chest. At that very moment, the heartbeat pulsing beneath the skin that he could feel had seemingly accelerated just a fraction.

So what if you try to resist, Damian? In the end, you still cannot fight against the system, nor the valuable attributes it has forced upon you. You cannot even... fight against your own desires.

"I find it incredibly strange," Sarah spoke up right at that moment. "It is true that this procedure occasionally pops up, but Boss Thorne has been exceedingly busy these past few years; he rarely intervenes in matters like this. Over the past few years, the board of directors has essentially left all the massive projects for Damian to handle, while these smaller matters were simply left for Howard to decide. For a notification to suddenly arrive this morning... I genuinely wonder if something major has happened."

"I don’t know either," Lucien replied, his tone remaining perfectly nonchalant, though internally he was laughing to himself. Of course something major had happened; the very person who caused it is standing right in front of you.

Meanwhile, on the far side of the design department, Ethan was sitting in complete silence, his face buried deep into his monitor. However, Lucien noticed that the man’s hand was gripping the computer mouse so tightly that his knuckles had turned stark white. He did not say a single word, did not gossip with anyone; he merely sat there, maintaining a terrifying silence.

Howard arrived a bit late today, so Lucien conveniently had the perfect opportunity to witness his expression upon seeing Damian’s notification. The moment the man finished reading the email, he shot up from his chair, his face flushed bright red, and marched straight into the small meeting room at the end of the corridor, muttering something under his breath that Lucien could not quite catch. He was probably making a phone call to someone, and if he was, it was most likely to Damian.

But it appeared things were not going entirely as he had hoped.

[Wow!] 000 excitedly flapped its wings right next to him, its voice brimming with absolute sheer delight. [I must say, your man truly moves incredibly fast; it only took one night for him to handle the situation so elegantly and decisively.]

"What do you mean ’my man’? Since when does he belong to me?"

[With him protecting you to such an extent, he will become your man in no time at all.]

"It is not as if he is doing this entirely out of his own free will; it is abundantly clear that he is simply being influenced by your stats."

[That is not entirely certain.]

000 muttered something under its breath, and just as Lucien was about to question it further, the system abruptly changed the subject. [Come to think of it, he is actually quite intelligent; handling it this way ensures that Ethan will not suspect Damian is deliberately stepping in because of you.]

"Well, it is not as if he is genuinely stepping in purely for my sake; the primary reason is that he saw my concept was far superior, and he does not want a similar situation happening to others. But regardless of the reason, it still works out incredibly well in my favor, so that is perfectly fine."

While idly chatting with 000, Lucien’s thoughts began to wander. He still could not fully comprehend Damian’s actions from the previous night; for a fleeting moment, he had clearly seen that the man was undeniably moved. Otherwise, why on earth would he suddenly lean down and kiss him? But right after that, Damian’s demeanor was exactly like someone who had been severely bullied and coerced.

It truly felt as if he were suffering from schizophrenia, possessing two entirely different personalities. Could it be... that Damian was exactly like Dominic Vance in the first world... Um, mentally ill?

Those individuals with problematic sexual capabilities were prone to going crazy, which was exactly why there were so many perverts out there.

Right as Lucien was lost in his meandering thoughts, Mark walked over from the opposite desk, holding a thin document folder in his hand. He placed the folder down onto Lucien’s desk, his voice remaining as quiet as usual. "These are some new notes I just updated regarding the upcoming season’s color trends. Have a look; there are a few things in here that I believe would perfectly suit your concept."

Lucien picked up the document folder and flipped through a few pages. It was still filled with meticulous notes, every single letter carefully handwritten, accompanied by neatly pasted clippings cut out from various fashion magazines. He looked up at Mark, noticing a remarkably different light shining within his eyes; it no longer contained that familiar worry or hesitation, but rather held something that looked very much like hope.

"Did you see the email this morning?" Lucien asked.

"Yes. I just read it," Mark replied, then hesitated for a brief moment. "Do you think this is because of... your situation?"

Lucien looked at Mark, seeing the profound curiosity intermingled with a faint glimmer of anticipation in his eyes. Perhaps Mark was also thinking that if Damian was genuinely willing to alter the established procedure all for the sake of a mere intern, then perhaps this company still retained a shred of fairness. Perhaps those possessing genuine capabilities still had a chance to be truly seen.

"Perhaps," Lucien replied, his tone remaining perfectly nonchalant. "But regardless of the underlying reason, this presents an opportunity for everyone. Not just for me."

Mark nodded, then fell silent for a long moment. Finally, he spoke up softly, "Thank you."

"For what?"

"For daring to do the very things that I have never had the courage to do." Mark replied, then picked up his document folder and walked back to his desk, leaving Lucien standing all alone in the pantry with a cup of coffee resting warmly in his hands.
