The System Keeps Making Me Do Indecent Missions [BL, R18]
Chapter 148: The Top Floor SummonsChapter 148: Chapter 148: The Top Floor Summons
Lucien watched Mark’s retreating figure, suddenly feeling a faint pang of sympathy. Mark was the type of person who possessed genuine ability, yet he was too timid, far too fearful, to the point where for several months he had only known how to bury his head in his notes without ever daring to speak up and demand fairness. Had Lucien not appeared, perhaps Mark would have continued to be oppressed by Ethan for a few more years, right up until the moment he was utterly exhausted and forced to leave the company entirely.
However, the young man was also quite intelligent; observing the neat and tidy way Mark extricated himself from every problem was enough to understand that much. It was simply a pity that such petty cleverness did not know how to save itself.
As for the matter of Lucien helping Mark escape from this stranglehold? It was not truly Lucien’s concern; at most, it was merely a situation where he accidentally needed an additional companion on this path. When everyone stood to gain, it was nothing more than a temporary collaboration.
Lucien would never be so foolish as to pour out his entire heart and soul merely to save someone else. The path he had drawn out only went that far; the rest would depend entirely on how Mark developed on his own. If Mark simply kept waiting and hoping for Lucien to transform into a heroic savior to rescue people like him, then...
What a true pity, perhaps for his entire lifetime he would never be able to rise above the surface.
If you give a person a fish, they will forever be reliant on you. It is far better to give them a fishing rod and show them a few techniques on how to fish.
This could also be considered a fair repayment for the initial effort that Mark had invested.
In the afternoon, the atmosphere within the design department appeared to be significantly more tense than usual. Ethan remained sitting silently at his desk, not speaking to anyone, only occasionally casting glances toward Lucien with a piercing, icy stare. As for Howard, after that phone call in the meeting room, he had returned to his desk with a thoroughly thunderous expression; he did not bother to look at anyone, nor did he call Lucien over to brew coffee as he usually would. It seemed as though the director had received a direct, metaphorical slap to the face from Damian, and now he was nursing a ball of fury without knowing where to vent it.
Lucien ignored it all. He focused entirely on his concept draft, meticulously refining every tiny detail, ensuring that everything was absolutely perfect before sending it up to Damian. This would be the very first time he submitted a concept according to the newly established procedure, and he wanted it to be truly outstanding.
Putting aside everything related to the system’s missions, or the matter of wanting to use the concept as a stepping stone to get closer to Damian. All of these actions of his were purely driven by a simple desire to exert the entirety of his abilities to complete a genuine masterpiece.
From his reality all the way to this present moment, this was the very first thing he had truly poured his own blood, sweat, and tears into finishing.
At around three o’clock in the afternoon, while Lucien was deeply engrossed in editing the concept draft, his desk phone suddenly rang. This was the first time anyone had ever called him through the internal extension number. He picked up the receiver, and from the other end of the line came a cold, highly professional female voice.
"Lucien Sinclair? I am Grace, the secretary to General Manager Damian Thorne. The boss wishes to meet with you at four o’clock this afternoon in his office. Are you able to arrange your schedule for this?"
Lucien blinked.
Grace was a name he had heard Sarah and several others mention before. In their eyes, the image of this woman was that of someone extremely cold, yet her capabilities were also exceptionally outstanding; nearly all matters requiring Damian’s review and approval had to pass through her hands first.
000 had also mentioned this person previously; for some unknown reason, Grace was fiercely loyal to Damian, serving as a steel door that completely isolated Damian from the rest of the world.
Even though Lucien did not understand why a talented woman with far more years of professional experience than Damian would be so utterly devoted to the man, it truly was not a problem at all. What male lead’s setting did not include a few fiercely loyal subordinates following right behind them?
The important thing was that right at this moment, the woman on the other end of the line was informing him that Damian wanted to meet him.
"Yes, that is perfectly fine. I will be there at four o’clock."
"Good, do not be late." The moment she finished speaking, Grace hung up the phone immediately, offering almost no room for negotiation.
And the instant the woman’s voice ended, it was the turn of 000’s teasing voice to appear: [Look at who is the mere intern getting summoned all the way up to the General Manager’s private office. Take a wild guess as to what this is about? Is it because he has a talented employee, or is it because... ahem... of last night’s affair?]
"Cut the nonsense, did you not clearly see how fiercely the man resisted last night? Do not use your system abilities to coerce him; if Damian flies into a rage, this world of ours will be completely finished."
[How do you know he was resisting? Who knows, maybe he actually wanted it too, but simply felt it was all too rushed and decided to find an excuse?]
"Right, but if that were to happen to a normal person, he would look no different from a raving lunatic suffering from schizophrenia."
Lucien spoke while simultaneously shutting down his computer, adjusted his collar, and stood up. As he brushed past Ethan’s desk, the man even raised his head to cast a glance at Lucien. Lucien did not know whether this guy had already found out about anything, but he felt as though the gaze Ethan directed at him was so bitterly cold it could pierce right through his body.
It was simply a pity that at this hour, Lucien had no free time to care about Ethan, and so he merely smiled faintly before stepping straight outside and heading toward the elevator.
The elevator ascended to the twelfth floor much faster than he had anticipated. The corridor on this floor was so quiet it was almost frightening; it did not look at all like the bustling office of a massive corporation filled with people constantly coming and going. The tiled floors were polished to a gleaming shine, the transparent glass walls overlooked a panoramic view of the entire city, and at the very end of the hallway stood a large set of wooden doors adorned with a solemnly mounted plaque reading "General Manager."
A middle-aged woman was sitting at the reception desk situated directly in front of the doors. Grace possessed incredibly sharp features; the inescapable traces of time could not erase the inherent beauty etched upon her face. Her hair was pulled up into a neat, high bun, and her eyes, peering from behind a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, stared at Lucien as if she were meticulously scrutinizing every single detail of his entire being.
"Lucien Sinclair?"
"Yes, that is correct."
"The boss is waiting for you inside. You only have fifteen minutes; after that, he has another meeting to attend."
Lucien nodded, then pushed the doors open and stepped inside.
Damian Thorne’s office was vastly more spacious than he had imagined. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a sweeping panoramic view of the entire city, with towering skyscrapers standing closely together bathed in the soft glow of the afternoon sun. Damian’s desk was positioned in the very center of the room. Resting upon the desk was a document folder that Lucien instantly recognized; it was the concept draft he had just submitted this morning, neatly printed out and placed impeccably right in front of the man.
"You have arrived?" Damian appeared to have just finished the task at hand; he closed the document folder and gestured, "Take a seat."
Lucien pulled out a chair and sat directly opposite the man. The only distance between the two of them at this moment was the width of a large desk, yet the atmosphere was entirely different from last night.
It was certainly much gentler and far less bizarre than the previous night.
"I have reviewed your revised concept draft," Damian said, his hand pointing toward the document folder on the table. "It is significantly better than the previous version. I want you to continue developing it in this direction."
"Yes, thank you, boss."
"But that is not the primary reason I summoned you up here." Damian paused for a brief moment, his gaze fixing straight upon the young man. "I want to ask you a question."
Lucien sat up straight, waiting patiently.
