The System Keeps Making Me Do Indecent Missions [BL, R18]
Chapter 149: Lingering ThreatsChapter 149: Chapter 149: Lingering Threats
For some unknown reason, Damian remained silent for a long time. Lucien merely felt that the gaze the man directed at him was rather strange, but he possessed absolutely no way to analyze what that look truly meant.
Compared to all the impulsiveness of the previous world, it was abundantly clear that Damian was a type of male lead who was far more restrained and introverted than Dominic Vance. He gently interlaced his hands and placed them on the desk, yet he appeared to be lost in an exceptionally deep state of contemplation.
The sudden quietness that befell the room made everything seem a bit tense, but Lucien simply sat there obediently and waited. After all, besides waiting, what else could he possibly do? However, for some inexplicable reason, Damian’s gaze was actually making him feel a little shy?
Initially, Lucien could still look directly into his eyes, but after a short while, he found himself having to avert his gaze and look elsewhere. His mind gradually began conjuring up all sorts of scenarios. Why did Damian summon him here today? Could it be that Damian was being influenced by 000’s stats? Or did the man wish to warn him against using personal matters to cling onto him?
While Lucien was lost in his rambling thoughts, it appeared that Damian had finished his own contemplation. He took a deep breath and abruptly stood up, giving Lucien a slight start. Then, he watched as the man standing before him suddenly turned his back toward him. Damian directed his gaze toward the window, as if deeply pondering over the late afternoon scenery.
After hesitating for a long time, Damian’s voice finally rang out. "Last night, when I returned home, I thought for a while about the things you said to me."
Lucien simply sat obediently and listened.
"To be perfectly honest, there has been no shortage of people confessing their feelings to me in the past. You are not the first, and you most certainly will not be the last. To say that you are the most outstanding? You are definitely not. The most interesting? I suppose the answer is also no."
Hearing Damian speak up to this point, Lucien’s eyelids began to twitch uncontrollably. He could not help but silently mock this man to 000, "Are you absolutely certain that this is the target I am supposed to capture? I find he resembles my harsh in-laws more than anything else; just look at the way he is picking me apart."
[What if he simply has a sharp tongue but a soft heart? He might speak like that on the outside, but in reality, he cares about you very much deep down?]
"You need to cut back on your fictional romantic delusions."
While Lucien was rambling on with 000, Damian had already delivered a long monologue, the general gist of it being that among the countless people pursuing him, Lucien was in no way superior to any of them. Lucien grew increasingly irritated as he listened, and it was only when the man finally finished speaking that he could not resist interjecting with a single sentence. "Yet, I am the one who managed to move your heart, am I not, General Manager Thorne?"
"Are you perhaps being overly confident?"
"I am not being overly confident; your reactions have clearly demonstrated that fact, have they not? Otherwise, why would you choose to completely redistribute the approval procedure for this round’s concept? The employees all know that it has been a very long time since you last involved yourself in these procedures."
Damian paused for a long while, seemingly resigning himself to the truth. "I myself do not understand why."
"Occasionally, you should listen to your own heart a little; when it comes to feelings, no one can ever explain them clearly."
"Let us put that matter aside for now, but I want you to understand one thing." Suddenly, Damian’s voice became remarkably more serious. "Whatever happens between you and me, if it continues, it will not affect our work. You must still prove your capabilities just like every other employee. I will not show you any favoritism. Do you understand?"
Lucien stood up, offered a slight bow in greeting, and then turned his back to walk toward the door. However, just as his hand touched the doorknob, Damian’s voice rang out from behind him.
"Lucien."
He paused and turned his head to look at Damian.
"Your email from this morning... I read it," Damian said. "I did not reply, because I figured you did not need an answer."
Lucien smiled faintly. "Yes, I do not need one. I merely wanted you to know."
Having said that, he pushed the door open and stepped outside, leaving Damian sitting all alone in the spacious office, with the document folder resting on the desk and an indescribable emotion welling up within his chest.
The twelfth-floor corridor remained just as quiet as when he first arrived. Grace cast a brief glance at him as he walked past her desk, her eyes behind the gold-rimmed glasses flashing with a hint of curiosity, yet she said nothing. Lucien did not stop either; he walked straight into the elevator, pressed the button for the seventh floor, leaned his back against the elevator wall, and let out a long, heavy sigh.
[You look as if you have just returned from a battlefield. Why are you sighing? The situation is developing perfectly well, is it not? Damian even brought up assumptions about the future between the two of you. Does this not mean he has already paved the way for you to advance?]
"And so what? It does not hold much value. People change from one moment to the next; who knows if there might come a time when he goes crazy and fires me from the company simply because I did not perform my job well? He made it perfectly clear that public and private matters are entirely separated, and right beside me is a venomous snake named Ethan who wants to push me out at any given moment."
000 put on a deeply contemplative posture and then clicked its tongue. [So, what is your plan?]
"Hey, let me tell you the truth, other people’s systems are always incredibly helpful to the main character. Meanwhile, as far as I can see, apart from asking me what I plan to do, you are absolutely of no help whatsoever."
Lucien spoke while casually strolling back to his workspace. As he walked past Ethan’s desk, he could clearly see the man’s icy glare pinning him down. But Lucien did not care much; he offered a placating fake smile and returned to his own seat, resuming his busy facade.
That evening, Lucien stayed at the office even later than usual. He wanted to put the finishing touches on the concept draft before sending it off, and he also wanted to take advantage of this quiet time to think about his next steps. At around eight o’clock at night, while he was deeply engrossed in editing the design, his phone suddenly vibrated.
To be completely honest, this timeframe was so familiar that Lucien could easily guess who it was. He unlocked his phone, and sure enough, it was a message from Mark. [I just saw Ethan and Howard sitting together and talking in the small meeting room. When they came out, Ethan did not look happy at all. You need to be careful.]
Lucien read the message, the corners of his lips curling up slightly.
Even thinking with his knees, one would know that Ethan was currently trying to find a way to deal with him; it was highly likely that the man had already faintly realized that something was wrong. Perhaps Ethan had not yet figured out that Lucien had managed to hook up with Damian, but the man had probably guessed that he had gone and snitched to the higher-ups. That was why Ethan wanted to take this opportunity to completely crush him before it was too late.
"Thank you. I will be careful." He typed back, then set the phone down and continued to work.
However, inside his mind, a brand new plan had already begun to take shape. If Ethan wanted to play games, then he would play with him all the way to the very end. In fact, this time, he would not give Ethan a single opportunity to ever stand back up again.
Sitting there letting his thoughts wander for a while, Lucien once again started thinking about Damian. Looking at the man’s demeanor earlier when they were talking, he appeared incredibly cool and composed, yet for some unknown reason, Lucien felt that Damian was actually acting shy. If he were not feeling shy, he would have spoken to him face-to-face just like last night; what reason did he have to turn away and look out the window?
Suddenly, he felt that the male lead’s rationality truly did not possess much strength when compared to the system that operated this entire world.
