There it was. This was the Violet I knew and was familiar with. I was still in my familiar universe.
She had every bit of the spike and venom she often wore on her sleeve in front of me, warily blocking my path as though I was the harbinger of death. This time, she wasn’t even pretending to be soft and sweet in front of the Alphas, simpering after them while batting her eyelashes to get them to do her bidding. I guessed I must have somehow pissed her off so bad that she wasn’t bothering to act any longer, deciding to take matters into her own hands.
If I didn’t have anything better to do with my time, I would wonder at her audacity and her schemes. But since I did have places to be, I scowled and snapped at her.
"I’m visiting my sister. Now get out of my way!"
A muscle twitched in Violet’s jaw, and she looked like she wanted to spit in my face.
"How dare you speak to me like that! I’m your Luna!" Violet screamed.
I caught her eyes darting towards Soren, wordlessly hoping for him to stand up for her. However, Soren did not react to her expectations. He simply ignored Violet’s gaze like it didn’t exist.
"Briar can say whatever she wants," Soren said, trying to catch my eye, hoping for a positive reaction. However, since I was still quite upset with him, I didn’t bother to meet his gaze.
Realizing that she wasn’t getting back up from Soren, Violet turned her attention to the other Alpha in the area. She looked at Rowan, who was standing right behind me, with a pleading expression on her face.
"Alpha Rowan," she said, "Are you going to let Briar be so rude to me?"
Rowan stared at her as though she was less than a dead bug he found on the bottom of his shoe. His flinty, dispassionate stare caused Violet to stutter, her words coming out of her mouth in a hurry when she realized Rowan wasn’t going to support her on this front either.
"You know what? It doesn’t matter if you’re rude to me! I must stop you right here. Alpha Rowan, you can’t let her visit Willow!"
Rowan finally stepped forward, and his hand tightened its grip on my waist. This wasn’t unnoticed by Soren, who pursed his lips and stared at it intensely.
"Are you questioning my decision?" Rowan scoffed, raising an eyebrow, his expression thunderous. "And since when do you have the right to order me around?"
"N-No... I... I wasn’t," Violet said, stammering, losing a little of the confidence she had regained just moments earlier.
She pursed her lips and took a deep breath, as though she was mustering all her courage to face a great force of evil.
"It’s just that Briar shouldn’t be entering Willow’s room like that," she said.
"You don’t get to make that decision," Rowan replied coolly.
"With all due respect, Alpha, I am Willow’s best friend," Violet said, standing her ground. Against my will, I had to give her some credit for her courage.
Or her lunacy.
"I cannot let this murderer near my best friend again, especially after she tried poisoning the whole pack to cover her tracks!" Violet declared passionately.
"What?" I hastily swallowed the confused laughter that burbled out of my throat. I stared at Violet, befuddled.
Next to me, Rowan raised his eyebrow. Soren was blinking in puzzlement.
"I beg your pardon?" Rowan asked icily.
Ignoring his cold tone, Violet took his response as an implicit permission to continue. She drew herself up to her full height and stared at me imperiously, her arm outstretched as she pointed a finger straight at my heart.
"Alpha Rowan," she declared, "I have it on good authority that Briar is responsible for the recent poisoning cases!"
This time, I couldn’t stifle the snort that escaped from my lips. This was rich. Since Violet didn’t know that I had been practically dead to the world these past three days, she decided to make me the culprit for the poisoning cases to ruin my reputation and get me exiled.
I had to hand it to her― her plan would have been flawless, if not for that tiny flaw of me being unconscious. Not only was I unconscious, but Rowan himself had also been by my bedside day and night. Unless I suddenly knew how to clone myself and teleport, her claims were nothing more than false, baseless slander.
Rowan growled, sounding like he wanted to lunge forward and sever her head from her neck. His reaction was something Violet didn’t expect at all. She quailed, taking an unsteady step back as she met his hostile glare. She hadn’t expected Rowan to take her accusation so poorly. Left with no choice, she then turned to Soren, who looked similarly displeased at her accusation.
"Think carefully before you speak to me again," Rowan said, his voice grave with warning.
This caused Violet’s face to pale even further.
"Do you... not believe me?" Violet asked.
Before Rowan could lose his temper, I reached out and held Rowan’s hand, giving him a tiny squeeze to get him to calm down.
I didn’t want him to rip Violet apart. At least, not until I was done with her.
Violet’s eyes instantly locked in on our connected hands. I watched as she clenched her jaw tightly in jealousy, her eyes quickly turning red as her face flushed green. Envy practically leaked from every pore of her body, and I pressed myself a little tighter against Rowan to incite a stronger reaction out of her.
The more she insisted I was the culprit, the harder she would fall when she realized that the Alphas knew all along that she was lying through her teeth. In order to infuriate her further, this was the best option I knew― to rage-bait her by faking intimacy with her beloved Alphas.
Rowan seemed surprised that I had leaned in so closely too. He looked down at me briefly, his eyes widening slightly. However, he didn’t push me off of him. If anything, he merely pulled me closer, tucking me closer to his body as he puffed out his chest with pride. He looked like a peacock, proudly showing off his feathers.
Seeing his satisfaction, Violet looked ready to explode. However, she couldn’t say anything about this right now, especially not when the Alphas weren’t pushing me off of them. Rowan had silently allowed this contact; who was she to stop it? After all, I wasn’t just a random member of the pack, but the Alphas’ rightful fated mate.
Violet may be their chosen mate and their chosen Luna, but in the grand matter of things, in the eyes of the Goddess, I was still the right match meant for them. If the Alphas recognized this bond, Violet was nothing in comparison. And she knew it too, which was why she didn’t dare to challenge me in this aspect right now.
"How can you expect the Alphas to believe you?" I asked, blinking my eyes innocently as Violet’s face twisted with jealousy. "You don’t have any proof? Who is this ’good authority’ you’re speaking of? Aren’t the Alphas the only authority here?"
Violet’s face paled, but she spat out angrily. "That was just a form of speaking! Don’t change the subject, you criminal!"
"Since you’re calling me a criminal, you ought to have some proof. What do you have to convict me?" I asked, trying to act like I was indeed worried about her accusations― as though I was the same girl back then, accused of stealing their wedding ring.
But the tides had turned, and the winds had changed since then. This time, the Alphas were standing by my side, not hers. Rowan was holding my hand, not hers, and Soren was keeping his silence, choosing not to back Violet up when she needed his help most. The only difference between then and now was that back then, I truly was innocent. On the other hand, Violet wasn’t spouting even an ounce of truth.
All of a sudden, I seemed to have stepped back in time, into a view of an alternate dimension. So this was how Violet felt all those times she got the Alphas to back her up against me. It was indeed a thrilling rush of power, and I could almost empathize with her. I now understood why she was so obsessed with this.
It was addictive.
"If you’re planning to just waste our time, then perhaps you have a little too much freedom on your hands," Rowan said coldly.
He looked up just in time to see Willow’s door had opened, and Cedar had popped his head out due to the commotion. All of us turned back to look at where Rowan was staring, and Cedar straightened when he realized he was about to be called.
True enough, Rowan said, "Cedar."
"Yes, Alpha!" Cedar instantly answered.
Rowan looked back at Violet, his expression glacial. "Send Violet Sorrel to the infirmary. As the current Luna, she ought to be serving her pack and performing her duties, caring for the sick and injured."
