Violet’s face paled at the way Rowan stressed the word ’luna’, and she staggered backwards.

"If she so enjoys throwing her position around, then perhaps it’s time she earned and understood the weight of it," Rowan continued. "After all, my brothers and I have no use for a useless Luna in name and nothing more." He glanced at Soren from the corner of his eye, challenging him. "Don’t you agree, Soren?"

Soren’s lips were pursed tightly together, and he looked royally pissed off― not at Rowan, not at me, but at Violet. He nodded once with surety.

"I fully agree," he said, completely sealing Violet’s fate. "Cedar."

"Yes, Alpha."

She collapsed onto her knees when Cedar stepped forward, ready to cart her off to the infirmary.

"No, wait!" she cried out, desperately clinging to Soren’s pants. "I have proof! I swear!"

She groveled and begged, and if I hadn’t known any better, I would’ve thought that the Alphas had just sentenced her to serve in the military against the violent rogues, or they had just ordered her execution, when in reality, she was merely tasked to help the healers out in the infirmary.

I couldn’t help but scoff and roll my eyes. The most she would be doing was to hand out some refreshments and check the temperature of the patients. I hardly believed that the healers would task her with anything too important, just in case she caused more trouble than help.

"Is this really necessary?" I commented, raising an eyebrow. "They didn’t order you to be hanged or executed by a silver blade. If you want to have a position of power, you’ll need to work for it."

Violet’s eyes were basically red as she snapped her head over to glare at me. She looked murderous, and if it weren’t for the fact that I was slightly shielded behind Rowan’s body, I had a feeling she would have loved to lunge forward and sink her claws into my neck.

But revenge was sweet, and I revelled in her misery. I wasn’t about to let her off so easily.

"You―"

"If you want to be the luna so bad, then you ought to start by serving the people," I said. "And just so you know," I continued, not allowing her a chance to retort, "spreading your legs doesn’t count as work. At least, not for the position of luna of the pack."

I smiled sweetly, just as she had done so a million times. Rowan’s hand squeezed mine, and I felt a surge of confidence to continue. This was fun, and I totally understood why Violet took so much joy in making my life miserable.

I had truly survived a little too long― long enough to see myself become the villain.

"Oh?" Violet said, scoffing a little. She slowly climbed back onto her feet, swatting Cedar’s hands away when he tried to hold her back. "Funny you should say that. Though I suppose you might know a thing or two about spreading your legs to get someone to work for you, don’t you?"

She sneered as she got closer to me, and I stood my ground, gently pushing Rowan back when he tried to stop her from coming close. I refused to back down, meeting her gaze as she finally stopped a step away from me― and only because Soren held her back.

"Violet, that’s enough," he snapped. A vein at his temple throbbed, a clear display of his annoyance. He seemed to have also finally reached his last straw, barely holding onto the last strings of his restraint.

"No, I don’t think so, Alpha Soren," Violet said, not even turning around to glance at him. She continued, "After all, I think it’s only fair to have all our dirty laundry aired out. Briar brought up this topic, after all."

"Briar is our fated mate," Rowan said, finally stating the facts out loud. I turned around, surprised that he announced it point-blank like this, especially to Violet of all people.

However, Violet didn’t flinch.

"Oh, I know, Alpha Rowan," she said.

"Then I don’t see what the problem is," Rowan replied.

Even I raised a brow, not quite understanding what Violet was trying to say. If she knew and acknowledged that I was Rowan’s fated mate, then her issue couldn’t possibly be with me sleeping with them. After all, that wasn’t something generally frowned upon, only celebrated.

However, her next line immediately had me choking on thin air.

"The problem is, Briar here isn’t just sleeping with you, Alpha Rowan," Violet said.

Rowan and I instantly glanced at Soren, but Soren merely looked confused. His lips parted, about to say something, but he was cut off by Violet.

"I bet you didn’t know this, Alpha Rowan, but Briar has met up with a young warrior quite a few times in private," Violet said. "In fact, he has even been in her room last time, back when she was still staying in the omega quarters."

My eyes widened. At the same time, both Rowan and Soren frowned. Seeing that we were properly reacting to her words, Violet grew a little more excited.

"The door was locked too, and he stepped into the room with her in private," Violet said. "Who knows what they could’ve done behind closed doors?"

"And what proof do you have of this?" Rowan asked, massaging his temples. He looked more and more tired the more Violet chattered on, yet the latter didn’t seem to notice.

"Well," Violet replied, "a maid saw them―"

"So that means you have no evidence?" Soren said, exhaling loudly. "Everything is just hearsay, basically."

"Yes," Violet said, scrunching her eyebrows. "But―"

"We don’t have time for this," Rowan said. "Cedar, get a move on."

"But it’s true!" Violet cried out desperately.

"Please don’t make this more difficult than it already is, Luna Violet," Cedar said. He came forward and guided Violet away, all while she put up a fight against it.

"Alpha Rowan, you have to listen to me! She even met up with him in Willow’s bedroom! You can’t let her bring random strangers in there―"

Violet’s cries echoed after her even after she was led down the corridor. Even though her figure was already long out of sight, her voice still trailed after her, bouncing off the walls. It wasn’t until after a while that the corridor turned silent once more.

I chanced a glance at both Rowan and Soren. Both of them looked exhausted, but it seemed like neither of them was going to question me about what Violet had just said. It was either that they didn’t care — which I found hard to believe — or they didn’t believe a single word that Violet had spewed from her mouth.

After all, back when I still stayed in the omega’s quarters, I wasn’t exactly a popular figure either, even amongst the other omegas in the pack, much less the warriors. Everyone knew of my bad reputation, and because of that, they stayed clear of me as much as they could. Jessie was the only exception, but now, I was starting to have a good guess at how Violet knew so much.

The warrior she spoke of was probably Ralph. He was pretty much the only warrior I had exchanged more than a couple of words with, and he was also the only one who had entered Willow’s room without permission — or reason — to do so.

Since they weren’t planning on asking, I saw no reason to explain it either. If I did, it would only make me look guilty. Right now, they probably thought that Violet was either exaggerating or lying just to get me away from Willow’s room.

Without saying a word, I continued to walk down the corridor and towards Willow’s room. Rowan and Soren exchanged a look but followed closely behind.

Once I entered the room, I realized why Cedar had left so quickly. Cassian was indeed here as well, and he was casually seated in the armchair right across from Willow’s bed. I thought that he would’ve already left by now.

"I heard the shouting," Cassian said, flipping the pages of the book he was reading. He didn’t even look up. "Did you guys send Briar away―"

He stopped himself short when he looked up, only to realize I was standing right by the door, with his brothers behind me. Cassian’s eyes widened as they rested on me, and his gaze kept flickering between me and his brothers, as though he was in disbelief that I was still here.

"Your ears don’t seem to be working very well, then," I said, stepping into the room. I walked towards Willow’s bedside. "Violet was the one sent away."

"How did you get in here?" Cassian asked, jumping to his feet.

"I walked," I replied. "Unfortunately, last I checked, I have not sprouted wings to fly yet. Otherwise, I would’ve gone out the window already."

"I knew it," Cassian said, scowling. "Samuel was just exaggerating. You hardly seem unwell."

"Cassian," Rowan said warningly. "Zip it."

"Look at her!" Cassian cried, using both his hands to gesture at me. "She is full of life. And on the contrary," he said, gesturing to Soren, "look at him! Soren looks like shit."
