The classes had begun early in the morning.
Knowing that I would have to provide a justifiable reason for our absence to Elsa Senor... I had come to the class a few minutes earlier than my time, and that was when I had noticed Noah and some other first years along with John, as they walked towards Elsa, who was just about to head for her lecture.
Curious about it, I made my way towards the group.
But just as I was about to approach them, the group bowed slightly towards Elsa before moving in my opposite direction.
"John."
I called out to him, making Noah and the others turn to look at me.
"Kael?"
Though confused, John whispered some words to the student closest to him before walking towards me.
"Can we talk later? I have to report for the student council meeting."
John hurriedly spoke as he approached closer to me.
"They selected you?"
The question involuntarily left my mouth, making John look at me with a hint of betrayal in his eyes.
"Dude—"
"I know you are a talented one. I was just surprised that the council had students who were sensible enough to recognise your talent."
The words freely flowed from my mouth, without the slightest hint of hesitation.
Though John didn’t appear to be entirely convinced by them, he nodded his head nonetheless.
"So can I go now?"
John’s eyes were already focused on the group ahead, as he looked desperate to tag along with them.
"Why go with them? Don’t you know where the student council is?"
My words made John turn to look at me with a hint of shame in his eyes.
Hm?
"You see... as it’s my first time going to the council and meeting all those seniors, most of whom are the heirs to some of the strongest noble houses. Then there’s your sister too, and—"
"I will come with you."
John’s reasoning was perfectly natural, but it wasn’t the reason for my decision.
John appeared baffled by my words, as he blinked his eyes twice before clearing his throat.
"Are you sure? Because only the representatives are allowed to attend—"
"I may not be a member of the council, but I am still a student representative."
Interrupting John, I turned my head to look at Elsa, who had been staring at me while heading towards the class.
No.
She wasn’t heading towards the class, but was standing at the same place, probably—
For me?
"Give me a minute."
"Huh? But the meeting? I will be punished for coming late—"
Not giving John another look, I walked towards Elsa.
Elsa, on her part, had her arms crossed as she examined me with narrowed eyes.
"Diana had informed me that you were responsible for their absence yesterday, and that too against their wish."
The hallway had now grown silent, with the only people present being me, Elsa, and John.
John... the guy kept giving me desperate looks, as if he was afraid of the consequences he might have to face due to his absence from the meeting.
I couldn’t understand what there was to be so scared of, and that too if I was going to accompany him.
"Yes, that’s true."
I calmly replied to Elsa, making her raise her brow in question.
"May I know the reason?"
Her words sounded polite, but clearly they weren’t.
"My apologies, but I had some work to do on behalf of the headmaster. If you have any doubts regarding the same, you are free to ask him."
I mean... the headmaster wouldn’t be petty enough to not take the blame, would he?
And honestly speaking, what could one even achieve by attending some theory classes?
It was better to let the students have the freedom to use their time according to their own choices.
I thought that response would have been enough, but it clearly wasn’t, as Elsa kept staring into my eyes with a gaze that said a lot more than words ever could.
"It’s better to not test the limits of his generosity, Student Kael."
"..."
"It’s just advice on my part. You are free to reject it, but I hope you wouldn’t, and that’s for your own good."
Well... it was a given that Elsa wasn’t a fool, but there was a reason behind the response that I had given her.
After all, I had to let her know how much respect I had for her rules.
As if anyone could order me around.
"I will keep that in mind."
Giving a polite reply, I looked at John, who had now begun to jump on his toes, as if he were ready to dash through the hallway.
Maybe he really was.
"Where are you going?"
Just as I was about to walk towards John, Elsa’s stern voice made me stop in my tracks.
"To the... student council."
Elsa narrowed her eyes at my words.
"Why?"
"Why not."
"..."
"..."
Not only Elsa, but even John looked baffled by my reply.
"I don’t remember you being part of the student council... Student Kael."
Elsa stressed the last part of her statement, as I felt her trying to control the facial expressions on her face by pressing her lips tightly against each other.
"John needed my help, and as the student representative of the first years, I thought it was only right for me to greet the students who would be representing the first year in the student council."
Managing a small yet polite smile, I stared into Elsa’s eyes without avoiding her gaze.
"You may go, but be quick to return or else I would have to take a... more practical approach to teach you."
Adjusting her red hair, Elsa returned my smile, though I didn’t feel her smile reaching her eyes.
"Let’s go."
Nodding at Elsa’s words, I walked closer to John before walking along with him.
As we made our way towards the student council, I could feel Elsa’s gaze boring holes into my back, though she made no effort to stop me.
"Kael... could we walk faster, please!"
John’s voice was full of anxiety as he pleaded with me.
"Rest assured... you have me."
