The laughter quickly devolved into a crazed, manic cackle.
"Gehahaha Gehahaaa haaa haaaa!!"
Adrian narrowed his eyes and sped up once more.
But before he could reach the Apostle, a blindingly bright, spherical golden barrier suddenly erupted around Gabriel’s body, shielding him perfectly.
Adrian and Sebastian froze in place, watching in horror at what happened next.
Right in front of their eyes, the deep, bloody gash on Gabriel’s shoulder knit itself back together. The massive, fatal stab wound through his stomach sealed shut in just a second, leaving completely flawless, pale skin behind.
But the worst part was his missing arm.
The severed stump began to bubble with golden light. Bone rapidly shot out of the stump, seamlessly growing and extending outward on its own. It was almost like the cells were restructuring themselves at an accelerated rate.
Thick bundles of red muscle fiber rapidly wove themselves around the new bone. Tendons snapped into place. Arteries and veins frantically grew, pumping fresh blood through the new limb before a pristine layer of pale skin rapidly sealed the entire thing shut.
It didn’t even take more than five seconds for the entire arm to completely regenerate.
Adrian just stared at the fully recovered Apostle, feeling a sense of despair wash over him.
This man was literally just Hugo, but on steroids.
Hugo’s Pain Tolerance healing ability was incredible, but it was nowhere near this level. If Hugo had to heal someone’s chopped-off arm, he would need the severed limb to be pressed against the stump so he could reattach it. And healing fatal internal organ damage like a pierced stomach would take him quite a long time to fix.
And on top of all of that, Hugo would have to experience the agonizing pain of the injury while he healed it and the ijured would have to experience the pain too.
But this guy? Gabriel didn’t have to deal with any negative side effects at all. He didn’t even need the chopped off part.
The sheer speed of the regeneration was just insane.
Adrian just stared at the Apostle and thought to himself.
’Compared to those High Elves, this guy is a fucking monster. At least the fatal damage those elves took couldn’t be healed instantly. But this guy... even though he’s not faster, stronger, or even more durable than them, his regeneration just makes him scary. Really, really scary... It feels like I’m looking at a cockroach that got injected with a super soldier serum or something.’
Adrian took a deep breath.
He instantly extended his mana strands directly toward Sebastian and Claire.
"Retreat, both of you." Adrian ordered through the telepathic link. "Sebastian, take Draven back to safety immediately. I’ll hold him down."
Hearing this, Claire’s eyes went wide.
She couldn’t help but recall exactly what happened a few months ago in the northern plains. The image of Adrian’s completely broken, crushed, bleeding body suddenly resurfaced in her mind.
She clenched her fists and gritted her teeth as she stared at him. She subconsciously brought her hand up to her side, pressing against her dented armor where it hurt the most. She could easily tell that a few of her ribs were fractured just from that single roundhouse kick.
She stared at Adrian with a deeply conflicted expression on her face.
’His speed is on par with mine right now,’ Claire thought bitterly. ’And if he uses his wind magic, he is much faster. He has clearly reached the C-rank, even if he’s just in the early stages. I should have taken my own training more seriously. I reached my limit as a C-rank, but if I had just pushed myself a little bit harder over the last few months, maybe I would have reached B-rank by now. Then I would actually be helpful right now.’
She slowly turned her gaze toward where her brother was currently sprinting over to Draven’s unconscious body. Draven was a B-rank knight, and seeing a knight of his caliber lying completely motionless didn’t give her any confidence that she would have been helpful even if she had advanced.
She took a deep, shaky breath and shifted her gaze back to Adrian, and then to the glowing Apostle.
’Should I stay and try to help?’ she asked herself. ’Or would I just end up being a burden?’
Feeling completely helpless and lost, she just stood right where she was, not knowing what to do.
On one hand, she did not want to see Adrian suffer like he did before. It had been incredibly hard to look at him when he was beaten black and blue by the High Elves. But on the other hand, she didn’t know if she would only end up making things worse for him if she stayed and got in the way.
Just as she was trapped in her spiraling thoughts, the spherical golden mana shield surrounding Gabriel suddenly disappeared.
The Apostle looked at Adrian, then casually glanced over at Draven and Sebastian, who were already retreating toward the back lines. Finally, Gabriel turned to look at Claire, who was just standing there like a statue.
Gabriel turned his gaze back to Adrian and grinned.
"So, you’re not someone who only cares about yourself, are you?" Gabriel taunted.
His grin widened. Even though he was the supposed Apostle of an Angel, his smile looked much more like a Devil’s.
Adrian clenched his jaw. He dashed forward to intercept, hoping against hope that Gabriel didn’t rush toward Claire first.
As he ran, he yelled through the mana strand.
"Run, Claire!" Adrian ordered. "Just fucking run! Don’t think about anything else. Jus t run!"
The desperation in his voice seemed to finally bring her back to reality. Her hand twitched slightly by her side.
But instead of turning and running towards the back for safety, she took a step forward.
Adrian saw her move from the corner of his eye. At the exact same time, he saw Gabriel pivot sharply and turn directly toward her.
